hmm is this the right future content & way to go for Potbs?
Undecided myself as the screenies look a bit dark & morbid!

Sounds like Pirates of the Caribbean, the Disney game.
This is not the future of PotBS. There is a particular area in the game that has supernatural content. It is easy to avoid, clear when you are getting there, and not integral to the gameplay at all. The buffs and items from that area are only useful in that area.
It's done that way on purpose. The area has its own stories and fun stuff, but there is no reason to *have* to go there, so you can skip it if it isn't your thing.
