You buy a mercedez benz, you make monthly payments religiously for years.. you even buy all the upgrades to your mercedez, all the bells and whistles.. then one day you go out to your garage and your mercedez is GONE and in it's place is a rusty old volkswagen...
Anyone else here who remembers when SOE completely banned THEED? you couldn't go there at all, the city was closed, and anyone who had been in the city was booted out.. why? because their whole player base was complaining about their missing mercedez's.. that's the kind of people SOE is /shrug ...
I went back to see my old house and the pets I had made as a MBE.. no one spoke to me for the whole 2 free weeks.. there was no one there.. SWG USED to have over 500k players now they are lucky if they have 5000 players.. that alone should tell you something!

things change.
I for one am interested in trying it.
the problem is.. people that complain, drive away potential players. its a wicked cycle. I understand though, I really do.. but I think I am gonna give it a show anyway... make it 5001

I think the last mmorpg i would spend money on is Tabula Rasa
for me it would be WoW..
or make that.. the last mmo.. I would spend money on AGAIN.
Blizzard doesn't need anymore of my money, with so many FAR better games just struggling to get by, because of the way they cater to the gaming lowlifes (noobs if you will). 9 million subscribers doesn't mean much when half of them have the maturity level of a angry fat kid.

People whine about the old SWG but frankly the combat in it sucked, it was shite. At least they have made it slightly well EQ/WOW style. What is needed really is a new upgrade and Tabula Rasa (semi FPS) brought in.
But best of all would be to scrap PlanetSide and merge SWG and PlanetSide together. That would make SWG the best MMO ever and kill off ALL competition.
You are a fool. Pre-CU combat was fun as hell. Changing to Wow/Eq style is what ruined everything. Combat was only part of the game though. It was probably the best game to date, simply because there were no limitations of class/level. The only thing stopping you was your imagination. It was a true sandbox game and I cant wait until another one comes out (Or for swgemu to finish).
I wish you luck in that. Really I do. Make sure you pick one of the three active servers. Maybe after some time in there you can give us your impressions of what the game has become.
Honestly though I dont think that the people that complain drive anyone away from the game I think the facts of what happened to those people that complain do. No one wants to play a MMO where the time they put in to it means nothing due to drastic changes. Not to mention SOE's reputation not just in SWG but in other games as well. I know I have never stayed away from a game because of what someone said on a forum. That could be just me though.
Good luck to you and I hope you enjoy it.
mmo's are everychanging. unfortunately..
I just can't equate time spent in front of a computer with value. Sure i pay my monthly fee.. but in doing that I agree that I am playing the game as the company I am "renting" my virtual space and character from sees fit. I don't have any room to complain being that I agreed to exactly what I am getting the very first time I logged on.
but i really do get why people get upset... but I just learn to deal with it, and have fun any way I can.

In those first few months, without buffs, combat was tough. It took some skill and determination to do the things that buffs made simplistic. The last thing I would ever say was that combat at that time was dull, easy, or sucked.

I think you're both part right. Pre-CU did suck, but not because of how the game was set up. In truth they listened too the people too much. The nerf bat came round for every fotm. But more then that the game had so many bugs. Also they didn't take a hard stance against cheaters. Jedi had been found to have 30+ crystals in there LS and nothing happen. Double sliced weapons stayed in the game.
The death nail was all the jedi patches. Smugglers needed a revamp almost as much as BH but it never came. Patch after patch and all I saw was improvements to Jedi.
The game sucked because they never tested crafting with high end spawns. Maybe they never intended for people to stack them the way they did, but all you had to do is put a time decay on them. It was too easy to hit speed cap with high damage professions. +11 to speed cap swordsman with a slow power hammer. +13 (I think) to speed cap a T21. Then add to the fact not everyone had a head shot or stun damage. 90%armor to everything but stun+speed caped 600+ damage jawas is what made pvp so unbalanced. Toss in the fact that Jedi were getting all the love when they could already take any other profession (if both players skill matched) toss in some game breaking bugs that where still present 2 years after launch and it’s not hard to see what was wrong.
What wasn’t wrong was idea. Some of the best people I meet in the game had no interest in combat. You don’t get that out of the games now. I miss logging in and having no idea what I was going to do. Now when I log into a game it’s like I’m paying someone to get me a job to do.
All they had to do was fix bugs, cap armor, maybe raise the speed caps for rifleman and stop pandering to the jedi. Instead they made a wow clone that doesn’t work ½ as well. Right now 8 million people are getting board of WoW. a balanced Pre-Cu (or even Cu) would have picked up more then a few people.
Well Raystantz I understand your point of view. Other people just dont see it that way and really it boils down to more than just changing a few aspects of the game. To some people SOE took their game away. Sort of the same as if they closed it down.
Im not going to get in to the whole thing because to be honest its just not worth it to me. I dont care all that much about the past. I just dont like the game the way it is right now. That doesnt mean you wont like it. That also doesnt mean it wont change again in to something I like. I jumped ship in the glory days of Pre CU. I didnt think it was all that great back then. I dont think this version of the NGE is any better though.
Honestly I would love for someone to just make another SW MMO. If I could get my SW geek fix in a quality game Id be a pretty happy guy.
Once again good luck to you with SWG.

Also, keep in mind that in December of '03 the devs nerfed the living poodoo out of all the critters in order to curb the power of the Creature Handlers, and this, combined with melee mitigation skills, buffs, and armor, rendered most PvE combat ridiculously easy.
Early on SWG was fun and challenging, taking on a nest of durnis was a sure way to go to the cloner unless you had help.
CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.
Once a denizen of Ahazi

god damn it, that sums it up so well, thanks dude for posting this..
what the guy posted above is the best proove of SOE's idiotism...
instead of keeping their innovative and groundbreaking pre-cu - sandbox style game to get 8 million board wow players today, they did exactly the wrong, they copied what so many people are board of these days, world of warcraft...
it makes me so angry, because its the perfect proove that SOE never played their own games, neither did they know what their players loved about this game...
shame on you SOE/ LucasArts
"You must be either retarded or a fanboi..."
I almost entirely agree with gaunt006 except for the fact that i refuse to let swg be called a WoW clone since it has normal graphics/art, things like player housing and decoration and proper crafting and a much more interesting story (SW!!). If they had done the things he proposed the game would probably be in a lot better state right now; having said that it doesnt mean the game is terrible now, i enjoy it very much. So those interested in it, should give it a try, preferably on one of the more populated servers and not let some swg vets who no longer play discourage them.
Actually... SWG WAS the last game I spent money on... a while ago... everything else that has been released between then and now has been mostly crap.
SWG? Pull the plug already!
after CU not worth mentioning, PRE CU it was a great game ruined by $OE coneheads with th CU .
Play single player games if you wanna play something Star Wars.

I'd hardly call SWG a "Mercedes" at any point of its life.
Let's look at the history, shall we (my dates may be a little off, so bear with me):
The game was buggy as hell, and there was very little to do. Yes, it was a fun sandbox, and the economic part of the game was awesome, but it was nothing like Starwars. No vehicles, no spaceships, you spent most of your time running around killing nasty chickens, and hunting for dragon meat to make a good gun, instead of fighting the GCW. It was a 2-D version of EQ with Sci-Fi skins.
Instead of fixing the game, SOE made it worse because people were too impatient about getting Jedi (Actually, come to think of it, I never heard anyone complain). They released Holocron's to solve this "problem". This led to infighting, camping at the crystal cave on Dant., and the most hellish grind in history, which in turn helped to ruin the economy.
Due to a perceived imbalance in professions, instead of just tweaking some numbers here and there, they decided to implement a totally unnecessary revamp of the entire combat system. Some of the changes were good, but overall, pointless. The result: There were still roughly the same number of viable templates as before.
Sure beat the Hologrind, but took the game into a blind tunnel -- this was pretty much the only thing in the game anyone wanted to do anymore.
Enough said.
What? You're not a Jedi you say? I'm sorry. NEXT! Actually, this period was half decent. Jedi hunting was a viable game option and fun at that. But the over abundance of Jedi actually let me to try to create a Jedi-Free GCW (Imp vs. Rebel Guildwar) on TC, because the GCW was pretty much pointless if you weren't a Jedi. We were actually starting to build up some steam until the NGE hit. In the meantime, suburban sprawl had hit ridiculous proportions due to SOE's mind-boggling refusal to make any aspect of the game a challenge, so that every casual player could afford to have 90 traded lots worth of crap on top of his 10 real lots.
That's how I remember my 2+ years in the game. It had fun moments, but I never felt like I was driving a Mercedes.

all i remmeber was till May 2005 i had fun playing the game. May some aspects wern' t ideal but i enjoyed playing and had fun logging in. in overall some minor things compared to
what really was a mess :
CU (May - November 05) ...
Finally all get jedi and all waited for something better and the fix for the CU.
NGE (Nov 2005 - ongoing)
The dumpest piece of crap in MMO history saw the light of a day and $OE can't fix it still and can't recover from it.

I have to agree with a lot of that.
Pre-CU needed some caps on weapon speeds, Combat Medic mind poison, max armor protection and doc buffs. Those things, and fixing bugs and adding the occasional content was all that was needed. Could have kept in the old Jedi grind, since it kept the numbers down somewhat, with the permadeath and lightsaber tef, Jedi stayed in the shadows, unless they really meant to come out to fight. Could have seperated them from the GCW by having light and dark Jedi factions (and not rebel or imperial), would have been the easiest thing in the world to do.
But this is SOE we are talking about, and why do something that makes sense, when you can do something stupid and piss people off?
Overall, the combat system was just ok, not great, but not bad either. All the other parts of the game, together with accessible PvE/PvP, are what made the Pre-CU so good. All the choices. Now there are none.
Thats the Spirit! Galaxies ROXORS now! I am playing 2 characters now. I got my Jedi to lv 75 and now got a trader going too in my house. Moved to Lok setup a med house and 3 extractors 2 wind gens and my trader (female char wife hehe) stays at home takes care of the place and crafts. She's got a chem extractor and a flora farm going working on lv 13 and going mining in space too.
I'm have so much fun I'm not playing anything else atm, even skipping crysis, no time.
GCW is going strong! Bria server is a good choice allot of PvP and community. You'll be pleasantly suprised. A couple of tips to make life eaiser.
1. Get a harvester droid as soon as you can afford. They really help when questing and getting hide, bone and meat for selling for your alt trader.
2. You need an alt trader if not just for selling on the market. You are limited to 25 items at a cap of 20k in selling per item on the bazaar.
Cya on!

Nevertheless... SWG WAS a very good game, now it isn't. Hundreds of thousands of people have canceled on SWG because of it.
Coming to the Vets' forum saying "SWG is GREAT!!!%!$!$!" only makes you look silly. Just because you say something, does not make it true, same as any other shill.

Agree with OP. Wait for a MMO gives you more excitement is way to go nowadays. Or give you money to an company taking ethical decisions something $OE is not known for.

If the developers had stuck to their original plan to fix combat and not worry about the classes as much as they did, they'd have been fine. The NGE absolutely reaks of overthought -- good on paper but impractical and just not fun in practice. I never bought into that "too hard to balance" crap. I think they just ran flat out of ideas in a limited timeframe and decided to generalize.
