I just finished watching the Dec 2007 newsletter on keeps / RVR etc.... and I couldn't help but think that WAR had a lot of the same elements as DAOC.
So seriously how are the 2 games really going to be different, or is WAR just an updated version of DAOC?
Comments
1. Tome of Knowledge
2. RvR is integrated into the world, no seperate zoning to get into the area. In other words, no frontiers.
3. No stealth
4. Limited Crowd Control
5. Public Quests
Etc.
Seriously if you just go to www.warhammeronline.com you can find all the things that sets it apart from DAOC. However it will have some similarites since it's the same developer.
Thanks for the great response.
These are the kind of threads I like..
More comparisons between daoc and less between that other game.
One other big difference, you can gear our your toon from PvP or PvE
oh and charachter collision
Yes, most of the similarities come from the design team.
Althought they were told not to integrate such things into Warhammer, and overwhelming amount of beta players apparently thought it would make the RvR better. Don't worry, it won't be too similar. Only the RvR, which is a good thing.
But why, Ympiriel's reply wouldve been exactly the same.
From what i've been told by my mates who were in beta is it's more like WOW.
I think it's fair to percieve as an updated version of DAoC but only some of the way! There is innovations in WAR there is really new. And the Warhammer IP does give its own frame. So i doubt that the experience would be that much alike ! But the question is if the META game would feel the same?
I wouldn't give that much attention to voices that claim that its like WoW. Remember for some WoW players, they relly have nothing else to compare with, because the know about nothing else! The WAR i tried at games day , was in some areas like wow or guild wars or.... any other mmo that use the standards there now is, for these kind of games. I mean mythic are not reinventing the wheel! But it for sure immidiatly showed it had it's own special feeling.... the taste of WAR !

I played Daoc since beta and WoW since their beta and I can easily see the WoW influence in War's design and the movies.
On the other hand, there's also a clear Mythic Daoc touch when you look at the movement etc.
(Disclaimer: WoW= Combination of MMO's before it)
I was sitting there the other week thinking about wow, daoc, and war. I was actualy playing daoc at the time, levelling a SM for some rvr action.
and my thoughts went something like this: Levelling in this game sucks, no real good questing system and I cba bugging my guildies to boost me to molvic bg, im fed up of this, i might go play wow.... shocked that the little wow devil had slipped into my mind i quickly balked! Wow might be way easier to level, but it aint got what daoc hs got... a decent rvr system.
so my thoughts developed from there to my next mmo... war. remember this would of been not long after the nov newsletter where they said theywere gonna add towers and keeps, and I was confused that these parts weren t already the IN thing in wars rvr. so Im glad these things have now been implemented.
any to what came next made me a little worried, whats the other thing that makes daocs rvr great? and i thought is it the 3way battle, hibs v albs v mids... knowing that the enemy of my enemy is still MY BLOODY ENEMY! and WAR is going back to the good vs evil system, blue vs red, east vs west. And although im still anticipating a great game, I think no matter what rvr stuff war pimps from daoc its still gonna lack the edge it has.
so conclusion, yeah war maybe looking like its rvr is daoc's rvr, but it will never be the same.
hehe sub note: people may say war = wow, but the latest i heard is wow is imprementing siege... does that make wow =daoc
Hi Pheace,
I aprecciated your considered post.
I haven't played an MMO properly yet (no time) - though I've been following things on here for a year or so, and followed the games industry since about 1990.
I'm also a Warhammer fan - since about 1990 (3rd edition Warhammer Fantasy Battle in those days).
I feel duty bound to inform you the Warcraft series majorly majorly borrowed from the Games Workshop IP around in those days (and Starcraft too from the futurisitic version of Warhammer - Warhammer 40,000)
So I'm sure that a lot of the similarity in graphics, and perhpas movement too comes from the fact that Warcraft really stole into Games Workshops IP and feel from the off.
Sorry if I got the wrong end of the stick in your post - you might have been refering to game design mostly.
Does WAR = DAOC2?
God, if only.
Yes the last sentence, I'm far beyond graphics, the only area where this argument still holds any water really ^^
I'm, talking about game mechanics, combat mechanics. graphics for me are somewhere down the list *and* as a lot of people mention, meaningless at this point of the beta to look at
WAR is not DAOC> BUt WAR does share a similarity with DAOC in that this is a game thatis built around the core of PvP (RvR). Everything in the game supports this end. End game isnt about shiney weapons, its about who is standnig when the dust settles.
Torrential
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
However, with the borrowing of of Keeps and Siege in Open World RvR they are moving in the right direction.
I am totally happy that they decided to listen to the beta testers and add more elements from DAoC. Even the December RvR podcast mentions that they took this idea from DAoC -- and that is a good thing.
I still feel that Mythic's Realm vs. Realm offers the best form of PvP (opinions differ) in that it gives real goals and real meaning to doing PvP.
~~~
Not DAoC 2, but the lore and look of Warhammer with game elements from Dark Age of Camelot.
One of the biggest changes that has me excited is the inclusion of collision detection. That alone will make a very big change in rvr. Maybe heavy tanks/defensive tanks will be able to make a more defined contribution to rvr. Can't wait to see.
Im not a big poster on this site, mostly a reader, but I decided to give my point of view anyway.
Basicly the way I see it, you have the great RvR from DAoC, and you have the little fun from Instanced Battlegrounds from WoW. WAR will have Open World PvP, and instanced PvP, thats basicly the best from 2 games that are heavy on the PvP aspect.
So what do I mean by this? When Warcraft was first released it took some things from the biggest games back then, and I wasnt around for the DAoC release but my guess is that they did the same.
So ofcouse Warhammer wont be any different, you will always have some things that people just like, and when creating a game, why wouldnt you take that and make it even better? People like quests more than grinding (WoW), all the games that have been released after WoW have a better quest system than games before WoW. And things that have been said about WoW that was not that good, will be remade and hopefully get better in the new games.
You have Open World PvP in Warcraft, but there really is no point in doing it, becouse you get more from doing PvP in Battlegrounds, Warhammer will fix that, and make Open World PvP more beneficial that instanced PvP.
Im not sure this is something you wanted to hear, but I just felt that I wanted to share my views
DAoC -> 50 Sorcerer RR8
FFXI -> 20/10 RDM/BLM (Current)
SWG -> Everything, Elder Jedi
WoW -> 70 Priest, Warrior, Hunter, Warlock, Rogue, Shaman
LoTR -> 22 Minstel
GW -> 20 WAR/Mo
is it a bad thing if it is similar?
i have never played DAOC but its been going on for ages and is popular so it must have some good elements to keep people playing...why not reuse those elements
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
I was just thinking, wouldn't you be able to jump over a dwarf?
I love that the Open World PVP will count more now. I loved the BG's in wow put they got old after awhile. Their is little open worlld pvp in wow. I am not a big fan of long PVE raids so as soon as the pvp got old for me I quit.
I am not quite sold on the keeps. The way they described it it sounds like if you can't get into a good guild you may be SOL. What if a bunch of power guilds (ones with large and active player bases). Each get ahold of one of two keeps in their own side's zones.
My fear is they could become gridlocked without many ever changeing hands.
Keeps are always being overtaken. You don't have to have awesome guilds to take one either. In DAoC, you could have 5 people and a big guild might have 20 people there, but you could easily have 5 of your guys tag it before 5 of theirs do. I can understand why you might be apprehensive about the keep idea. I assure you, it was great in DAoC, it will be great in WAR.
I remember being in a guild with.. roughly 50 people in it. We took several keeps and held them for a while. Nothing is forever. You'll see.
