If you're like me, there is nothing that anybody in the world can say to make me not play the first well-made graphics pirate mmorpg to come out. So download open beta - and when it comes out to retail and you're still curious...buy it for one month. But let me tell you my experiences.
There's a lot of people who like this game and I sort of like it too. It's just it gets boring. This game is exactly like Voyage Century except PoTBS is more complicated, less rewarding, more repetetive (lol), and better graphics.
Sea-Combat is fun, and so is avatar combat, and so is boarding combat. But that's basically it. You can't travel in the deep swamps of Florida and fight natives, you can only go to a dock and hang around the VERY limited and quite small city. ALL the missions are variations of the same missions, and you are hardly rewarded.
Although, this game IS still in beta(even though it's about to be released). There's still a chance they could make it less repetetive, but there is no way ever they can make the whole world explorable - the dock only feature was a bad decision made by them.
Other than that, this game has a lot of potential. I'll be buying a subscribtion in 4 months and see if the game has improved.

Disagree on all points.
This is just another naysaying post, intended to sway the decisions of potentially interested customers and fans of the genre, by pointing out generalities found in almost every other mmorpg in existence.
The entire game world was never intended to be explorable, its the Carribean, why would you expect to travel elsewhere when the game was never designed that way from day one?
Any real mariner or fan of sea life will get unlimited replay value from this game for years and years to come, i'd say its just not your cup of tea, and the false expectations you formed ahead of time about what to expect with it served to do nothing but let you down, a lesson to be learned.
I have to agree with the OP. There is no exploration in this game. That is its biggest flaw. There is absolutely nothing on the ocean to see or discover. Just water.
The only thing to do is instanced missions that are all pretty much the same. It gets boring pretty quickly.
ummm...what did you want to find on the water? Sea monsters....this is a somewhat realistic game. That said the only thing you would find on the water is water or an island.
I will be giving it a chance, but so far beta has kept me entertained. I think the best thing about this game is the PvP and the ability to take over towns. That's what's going to keep the crowd in the long run. Sure, it'd be nice to explore a huge game world, or to "fight natives in South America", but what this game DOES give us is amazing PvP. And I'm happy for that.
i also have to agree with the op being trapped in tiny citys is lame... they could of at least open a small areas around them....
also the quests are almost all exactly the same except for a select few...
for instance the getting ur pegleg quest.. that one was entertaining but ive done over 200 missions and only found 1 that wasnt almost exactly the same as the others...
Alf!
Entering towns was not even intended to be in the game at all so I really do not see the problem with them not being huge. The game is fun, but nothing special. I would however not say the it is like Voyage centry. Hard to explain, but it simply feels differand.
I personally was hoping for more sim than the current state shows.
A little corny to say a eve but kinda true
Surprisingly I'm having a lot of fun in game. I'm usually not a big fan of sandbox MMOs, with a little more work this one would have a decent mixture of sandbox and premade content though. A major reason for my enjoyment of PotBS is probably the ( comparatively ) fresh setting. I for one can't see another Ork or Elf in my MMO life.
Unfortunately I can't look past the many technical, gameplay and design issues. This game is nowhere ready for release. Rubberbanding in towns, towns themselves are not ready yet ( pirates are for the most part, nations not so much ), conquering ports is kinda pointless for Pirates, missing ship models, etc.
Unfortunately I only joined open beta this week. So I'll grab the pre order box for 5 bucks and play another two weeks, or actually three including the extended open beta. That should give me an idea of mid lvl game at least and the speed the devs are working.
I'll make up my mind once I have to fork out the cash for the full price box.
PS: This forum software sux when using Opera.
Well I have to agree with OP .... For centuries it was about exploring and discovering new places and civilisations ...also i would love to come across some uncharted islands,,, lost treasure ,, lost cities etc
to be able to explore is beautifull
Like I said before, I'm not going to say not to play this game - a month ago there would have been nothing in the world to stop me.
I'm just letting you know, this game doesn't have what I want when I think of a pirate/carribean game.

Tell the devs what you think rather than posting in Mmorpg.com forums. Every post that I have made on suggestions or bugs or just problems with the game have been immediately answered by a dev. Toss your ideas to them ... unlike many mmos out there they are actually listening to the players
I just don't get the "missions are repetitive" complaints. What MMO doesn't have repetitive missions? Kill 15 of XYZ creature type. Collect 25 ABC items.
If you mean PotBS missions are especially repetitive because they involve ship combat (except of course, for those missions that don't), I guess I'd have to ask what you were expecting?
I got to level 24 on PotBs Beta and I did enjoy it. I was really having more fun crafting ships than i was doing missions though. I gave away 100k db and all my stuff when i stopped playing beta. I must say boarding is very repetitive its like the same thing except the enemies wear different clothes lol. The game is very monotonous and it does get old instancing almost every time you land or enter a mission. I think the economy is the funnest thing in game and I could even see that getting old if I had played it much longer it's not very in depth. If your a casual player looking to kill time before AOC or Warhammer I would recommend it.
But you can fight Mayans amongst their temples and pyramids.
The problem is PotBS still re-uses some missions identically. Whether that is on purpose or whether they are place holders to be replaced by different missions remains to be seen, but right now you can do a specific mission, and then next town over see the EXACT same mission albeit with a new name and higher level ships. This does cause a problem of dejavu and hence complaints of repetitive missions are much more pronounced with PotBS than with other games in the genre.
However this is not a big problem and it is one that FLS can and should solve.
FLS devs do read these forums too, so while the PotBS forums are a better place for posting, these forums are a decent place too.
I agree completely. I adore exploration. However that is not what PotBS is about. PvP and RvR games are not about exploration but about conquering the other side and that is the primary focus of this game.
I know some of you may never explore this far but you can have your own house and a wife in this game:) Hehe but most players will never find them:)
you disagree entirely with the op? so the quests aren't repetitive and you can explore more than a dock area and a tiny city?
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
While exploration in any form would be nice (since I love exploration), in the context of this game it doesnt apply as its a RvR and PvP game. Thats like asking for exploration in multiplayer Unreal Tournament or Quake.
And yes many of the missions are repetitive, but many missions are also unique and hand made. Devs are well aware of this problem and working on it.

I fail to understand why they even include dock exploration, then, if this is more like Unreal or Quake. After playing the Beta, I came away with the impression that this is a game which will appeal to a niche group, but one I am not part of. Of course, I went in to the beta hoping for WoW on the high seas, I guess, not a fancier version of Side Meier's Pirates.
If the game focused on more role-play oriented adventure content, and less simulation, I suppose it would be more appealing. But I think the game will find a strong and devout following as a pvp-based niche game.

Like Eve Online... Imagine PotBS with 30k people online at once and on the same server.
I think FLS is expecting more than 30k though
