EverQuest II: Legends of Norrath Expansion Update

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

Adele Caelia, MMORPG.com's resident EQII writer, had a chance to sit down with the guys from Legends of Norrath, the popular online card game that acts as a companion to the MMORPGs. The game, we are told, just launched their first expansion, Foresworn.

Legends of Norrath, and online card game similar to Magic the Gathering is the newest edition to the SOE family. Its huge success and popularity over the past four months has left the community asking for more. SOE has been more than happy to oblige to this request by creating Foresworn, the first expansion for this thriving card game, which went live on December 19, 2007. Recently I had the opportunity to speak with Legends of Norrath’s Sr. Game Designer, Paul Dennen, and Game Designer Chuck Kallenbach about the upcoming expansion Foresworn.

Launch and Reception

When LON first launched I think many had their doubts about its success, but over the past four months the growing amount of tournaments, the overfilled chat rooms, and the amazing amount of loot cards seen within the game make it hard to deny that this addition to the EQ and EQ2 is a winner.

“It’s been great. It’s been a real experience in terms of linking it inside Everquest and making it playable in Everquest and Everquest II,” said Paul Dennen. “It’s not the coolest thing in the world but I didn’t know how it would go over. I was very concerned about keeping both camps happy. Everybody seems to be very happy with it.”

I think the recent tournament contest with a 5k prize to each qualifier, plus airfare and hotel to GenCon backs up that statement. The grand prize for the final tournament at GenCon is set to 100k, and with that kind of cash being thrown around, in my opinion is a sure sign that this game is doing quite well.

Read it all here.

Popular my Arasai-butt... a great majority of people are disgusted with the way the game was foisted off onto regular players. Making the game go down at irregular intervals, useless card content patches that force some players to wait 2+ hours to download content they'll never use... not to mention the way that the Norrathemon code seems to interfere with the real game...

I say put the card game on its own client, its own patcher, give it its own launcher, and its own server and strip the code from the real game. >.<

The game is solid.  It has many players.

I wouldn't play $15 a month to play a card game, but it is solid, and it is a nice game, different from Magic the Gathering, so if you are kinda into these game, the twists are entertaining.

As to the previous complainer, I have no idea, but I sure didn't have to download EQ, EQ2, Vanguard or any other MMO to try the card game...and it took about 5-10 minutes to download the game and play it...so...your 2 hours wait in download?  Not related to the card game, whatever SoE is telling you.  Bash SoE all you want, but don't beat on it orphans! :P

There is no monthly charge to play LoN.. its completely free unless you choose to buy booster packs at $2.99 a pop. Its also a very solid TCG with up to four player co-op.

The only relation it has to EverQuest (besides the Norrath mythos) is that each person in EQ/EQ2 can log into LoN with their same account name etc.. Booster packs also drop inside of EQ and EQ2 which can be easily transferred to your LoN account and traded or opened there.

Some EQ players have a lot of hate for LoN because they feel it is distracting developers from fixing real problems and bugs that have existed in EQ for a long time. The fact of the matter is that the MMO and the TCG have entirely different development teams.

IMO, the real anger might be better spent if it were directed toward Sony itself for not listening to player complaints and working to fix some of the more crippling bugs in EQ (server crashes for instance).

This isn't even an MMO, it's a damn card game.

I'm sorry but lol. My friend played it and there was noone even doing the tournaments, he had to wait 2 hours for someone to play with.

Yeah I enjoy the hell out of LoN , it has inadvertently cause people to actually start using the Taverns and Inns in EQ II folks show up regularly looking for games. The game is solid fun and has a crap load of players depsite what the shills are trying to tell folks on this forum.

Now was it really necessary to call complainers names? Did we call you gambling-addicts or pokemons or yugi-oh? Hmm?

And SOE better becareful, theres already people spending tons of money on ridiculous virtual items, and Im not talking about wasting 50$, think more like thousands.

And yes, it did take the second poster only a few minutes to download, it took me less than 5 minutes to download all their useless data, but not everyone lives in an area that can get cable or can afford T1... so what, they shouldnt play? Why dont you stop playing? Just because they are on a slower connection doesnt mean anything.

They should be giving us the option to not download the stuff like you can with the other content youre not forced to get.
