First before you read, this is the type of gamer I am:

- I am a pre-cu swg veteran

- I enjoy games like counter-strike 1.6 and battlefield 2141

- tried wow and lord of the rings online, both good games in my opinion but they get boring after a while, because of their linear game style

- the perfect mmo for me is a sandbox style game

and now about tabula rasa:

after downloading and installing tabula rasa and registering the 3 days trial this is my impression:

this game has a nice intro movie and the character screen music was nice, thumbs up for that... unfortunatly thats all I like about this game...

1. character creation? propably the worst in mmo's history lol but that wasnt important in this game for me, because I expected something similar to batltefield or any other first person shooter where the ingame action is more important than character creation

2. ingame movement and animation: characters move like the beginnings of the3.  NGE in star wars galaxies, it looks absolutely dull, like a 9 year old has done them

3. even counter-strike 1.6 or battlefield2142 have better character movement and ingame animations..

that was enough for me to uninstall the game again, sorry but I can't look at this game as a mmo, because I see nothing massivly on it :)

for me this game is really bad and not worth looking at anymore...

if I wanted to play dull animated games like tabula rasa, I would stay with NGE- star wars galaxies which has at least better character animation :D

I remember some games on Super Nintendo had better graphics than tabula rasa :D

dont mean to ruin anyones fun with TR, this is just my opinion...

I mean those who really enjoy tabula rasa should really try NGE-star wars galaxies, its a science fiction mmo as well and has better animations and content then TR...

as much as I hate SOE, the NGE is better than tabula rasa

I thought the animations were fine.  I thought running was fine and I liked how eh nyou njump from a height at a run you roll when you land.

Can you give more specifics as to what animations you thought were bad?

However you would have probably quit anyway even if TR had good animations because it is not a sandbox game.  It is very linear.  I dislike linear as well, but the fighting and pvp is enough to keep me entertained for a little while.

First before you read, this is the type of gamer I am: - Likewise Here and also a Player from SWG Chilly Server since 2003 and prior to Close Beta Bria in 2002. It was the transition from AO to SWG at the time I remember and SWG launch day was just absolutely horrible. It was the magic from the movies and games that made this mmorpg so successful back then. To walk into Mos Eisley Cantina and just sit there and watch people interact. It was too cool. Anyways, to the subject at hand.

    - I am a pre-cu swg veteran - Likewise Here

    - I enjoy games like counter-strike 1.6 and battlefield 2141 - Likewise Here

    - tried wow and lord of the rings online, both good games in my opinion but they get boring after a while, because of their linear game style - I see what you mean.

    - the perfect mmo for me is a sandbox style game - Likewise Here, but name one good sandbox game out there now.

    and now about tabula rasa:

after downloading and installing tabula rasa and registering the 3 days trial this is my impression:

this game has a nice intro movie and the character screen music was nice, thumbs up for that... unfortunatly thats all I like about this game...

    1. character creation? propably the worst in mmo's history lol but that wasnt important in this game for me, because I expected something similar to batltefield or any other first person shooter where the ingame action is more important than character creation - Compared to what? It isnt that bad, but I respect your opinion. I can understand SWG having one of the best character creation, but name another MMO out there that surpasses SWG.

    2. ingame movement and animation: characters move like the beginnings of the3.  NGE in star wars galaxies, it looks absolutely dull, like a 9 year old has done them. You better check your computer settings. SWG does use a different source for animation, but TR is fantastic for rendering graphics alot faster than ole SWG despite the graphics. SWG dont get me wrong is still awesome in my book, but falls short when processing animation fast enough for combat, it still moves like a traditional MMO should. However JTL is still impressive, but not as immerse as Eve Online.

    3. even counter-strike 1.6 or battlefield2142 have better character movement and ingame animations.. Battlefield Series (which rocks) is a FPS and so in Counterstrike, TR isnt a true FPS game. The BF and CS are limited maps. This is pretty much an unfair comparison. Now take Crysis vs BF Series, or better yet Call of Duty 4 vs CS. FPS vs FPS, now that is a fair judgement.

that was enough for me to uninstall the game again, sorry but I can't look at this game as a mmo, because I see nothing massivly on it :) As many others have tried, my 1st opinion on this game is pretty much like yours, but if you dont have an open mind and if your looking for a substitute for SWG, you wont find it here. The game doesnt start getting good till you hit around level 15ish. I found it unbearable at times just to get to 10. Then it all hit me. This game isnt as bad as people make it. Its guity pleasure. On the other subject at hand, SWG isnt even a sandbox type of game anymore, it has been beaten up pretty bad by the past devs. I do see old things becoming new again on SWG which is kinda of screwy, but I still dabb into SWG now and then, but it has lost alot of its magic since release date of 2003 esp the introduction to NGE.

for me this game is really bad and not worth looking at anymore... - Its ok, not everyone is going to like, but I think you will come back like many of the nayers. It is becoming a popular game. The game has alot going on within the next few months that may change your mind.

if I wanted to play dull animated games like tabula rasa, I would stay with NGE- star wars galaxies which has at least better character animation :D - Strictly your bias opinion.

I remember some games on Super Nintendo had better graphics than tabula rasa :D - Sarcasm at its best. You definetly need a system upgrade.

"You must be either retarded or a fanboi..." - Not retarded, but guess you would classify me as a fanboi since I like TR despite I still play SWG since BETA on the Chilastra Server. I guess I am a fanboi there too, but thats ok, as the old saying goes, different strokes for different folks or better yet, anothers mans Trash is another mans Treasure. SWG is good if your into PvPing at Restuss 24/7, but that too becomes dull after a hour or 2.

Goodluck on your new endevours to the next generation of MMO gaming!

I did the beta, I played for two days. After that I reformated my computer so I wouldn't have any trace of ever playing that game on my system.

    Lol, damn right.

I wanted dynamic battlefields, and all i got playing was to collect boargar and thrax testicles.

{ Mod Edit FFS would have been fine :) }, Garriott really butched this one.

Why? Why have we been forced to "try back in a few months"  lately? This is so common now it's pathetic. How about putting out a really good finished game that people will stay with longer than the initial first month of release?

I understand that there have been games in the past with bad launches. But even they ended up with 200k  players. Now MMOs are released half-assed and can't scratch together no more than 50K players. Please don't say it's because there are too many games out to choose from. If it's good, players will stay. EVERYONE is looking for a good game right now. I'm sure most are like me and play something to hold them over, jumping from game to game every few months. Hell, F2P games are more populated than new releases lately; so you know times are bad.

I tried a bunch of sieges, both defence and assault, and i found them incredibly silly... what's gonna change, pray, tell me :)

Besides, if everyone will "wait few months", that is, blocking account for now, the game's gonna close just how Auto Assault did.

Tell me about it, im going to reformat my Harddrive aswell, I hate having registry files left behind, Espically Tabula Rasa one's.

Im not immpressed with PotBS also, but i do see it immproving alot over the next few months.

WOW was good lasted me 1 year,

EVE online is good im still playing since Beta,

EQ2 was good lasted me until i got banned.

LOTRO Was good but PVP is crap, Left after 1 Month. (if they add open pvp im comming back)

Tabula Lol Rasa was shit, Movement is wierd, Character Creation is wierd, The UI sucks (talking in chat is ridiculously annoying)

If a MMO gets borring in 3 Day's ill tell you right now it's CRAP, This is the first MMO i have played that i actually wanted to DELETE the game before the trial period was over.

Guess we will have to wait for Age of Conan,

I even played SWG longer then this, SWG is superiour compared to this

Anyone that thinks they need to reformat just to remove registry entries, and specifically, one game's registry entries really shouldn't be throwing too many stones...

... they might just hit themselves in the head a few times.

    TheChronic:

How's it going?  Your post sure sounds like you played for about 10 mins.  Didn't understand how movement actually works, how to work the UI and key bindings.  Then you come here to post some garbage.

I agree, TR feels like a beta test still.  It's not done and there are things missing.  However, the character creation is infinitely better than some other MMO's like WoW.  Even with more races, WoW has such a limited character models and limited selections for what can be changed.

The 2nd and 3rd points you make, I think are actually still one point about movement.  So I can only say, TR is a different game than the others you are use too.  Spending only 10 mins playing a game, it's hard to adjust to anything that quick from games you have played for hours and hours.  I have spent a few hours playing TR now and I must say, the interface and movment are fine, just takes time to get use too.

    Merry Xmas

Its not the best MMO to come out certainly. BUT it is better than most of the recent ones to come out: PoTBS (beta), Vanguard, Sword of the New World, Hellgate (MMO?).

    The Game was simply rubbish....

The OP is right about the poor graphics and animations.I only wish that were all that is wrong with TR. The game play was very dull and the aiming and combat system clumsy. Something that RG had said once before this game came out was that he didnt think it was a good idea for perople to linger for too long in one game but to jump from one to the next fairly quickly which of course leads me to believe that he and NCsoft will be putting out cheap disposable games (which they are famous for) and hope that people will keep buying and playing them for a short time so that they can get their box money and a year or so of subscription fees then just abandon them.

The Korean MMO mindset has invaded western developer philosophies and we are now being subjected to their games. Richard Garriott promised a rose garden and delivered a landfill.

so i guess from the features point of view ...TR sucks as compared to a Eve-online in presence of  Sci-fic MMO?

Anyways i got a poll but please give some stufff about why u voted

Its simple... if YOU dont like what YOU see, then come back in a few months. I am satisfied so far, so I will keep on playing. YOU dont have too. Just go back to the game that puts a Kool Aid smile on your face.

Believe me, If I didnt like a game, I just move on and think nothing of it. But thats just ME. I wouldnt even post if the game sucked ass for whatever reason. We got alot of people that state - Well Hell. if I think it sucks, you will not like it either, try something else and dont waste your time with this game (this is definetly common with the trolls on this website). Me, I was just brought up, if you got nothing nice to say, dont say it at all. Apparently lots of people had a different unbringing than me. I am not saying mine was perfect, but you get the picture.

In the meantime, people squabble about the most littlest things when we got such a huge variety in the world today, like MMOs, FPS and game consoles. Yeah I know its the now and not then and we are more demanding due to technology. But people forget what got us here in the 1st place and it all started with Pinball then to Pong.

When I grew up Commodore 64 systems <RIP> ruled the planet and we were less spoiled like these newer generation of gamers, I remember Bards Tale kicking major ass in the RPG world by Electronic Arts and Zork was one of the first interactive fiction computer games and an early descendant of Colossal Cave Adventure (taken right out of wiki).

Give me a Sega Genesis with Madden NFL or NHL Hockey, you didnt see me bitch at all.

So to wrap it up, if you dont like, find something else to play and move on. Dont let your experience ruin someone elses game play, unless you have a bad life and like spreading negativity. (wow, I guess I am a fanboi).

I would agree with you, but I played both this week and the NGE combat just isn't satisfying enough to make me want to log in and play it.  Of course, the combat is really all TR has going for it at all, and it gets pretty boring after a little while.

I participated in the last part of the closed beta, and wasn't impressed at all.  But I keep hearing the game is better now, so I wanted to check it out.  For me, the pinnacle of PC gaming will be when someone can combine the depth of an MMO like pre-NGE SWG with the exciting, white knuckle action of a good FPS, like battlefield.

I tried the free 3 day trial of TR and came away with about the same feelings on the game as you did.  It's flat, bland, boring and shallow.  Character creation, and even customization as you level is pretty bad.  Everyone looks exactly the same, and there is nothing at all to the game other than the combat.  As a shooter, it's pretty bad... with the compromised controls and sticky targeting.  It doesn't really compare to any FPS games, or even to hellgate when it comes to combat, but the combat is a lot more fun for me than the standard MMO 1,2,3,1,2,3 wash, rinse, repeat.

As an MMO, it is one of the worst I have played.  Customization is negligible to non-existent.  Crafting is just slapped on as an afterthought.  It's only useful to keep up with the copious amounts of ammo you need.  There is simply nothing to the game other than run and gun.  Out of combat systems are the cornerstone of MMOs these days.  That's where they get the depth that make us willing to plow through the boring repetitive combat.  What's the point of fixing the combat if they are just going to scrap everything else that makes the genre compelling?  If I want some simple FPS action with a bit of character progression, Battlefield 2142 is a better choice... and they already have player controlled mechs working in-game ;)

When my three day trial was up, I was left feeling like I had just played SWG, with everything I love about it removed... and left only with the crappy new combat that made me quit in the first place.  I quit SWG shortly after the NGE and haven't gone back to check it out until this week when i realized that, for some reason, my account was active for 21 days. I patched up and jumped in, happy to see my guild hall and personal house packed up in my datapad.

I found a level appropriate planet to try and remember how the combat worked... only to remember clearly why I hadn't played in 18 months.  The combat sucks.  The game wasn't made to be a FPS and it never will be.  It is just as bad as yo u remember it, it hasn't been improved at all.  The combat controls are terrible, but the combat mechanics are even worse.  Your gun can not fire without a target under reticle... meaning you can practically just tape the left mouse button down and point toward bad guys.  If you have one lined up, it fires... if it fires, it hits.  Of course, your average equal level humanoid mob takes about a hundred shots to bring down.  Good thing you have your special skills.  All 6 or 7 of them.  Bahj... I could go on all day.  The point I'm trying to make is that the combat in SWG sucks, where it is at least passable in TR.  One of these days there will be a good MMOFPS, but it won't be either of these games.

  • UcrossUcross Member Posts: 7

I tried the 3 day trial as well.

I just found it kinda boring.  It seems like in all MMORPGs the main goal is for players to level up so all MMORPGs focus on that.

I would love it if some company focused on a great game first, and then about leveling up.

My requirements for me to play another game is when I start playing it to say, "If I didn't level up would I keep playing this game?".  The answer was a clear and resounding 'no' for Tabula Rasa.  I'm optomisitic that conan or WAR will offer a 'maybe' or 'yes' to that answer but realistically don't think either will.

No offense, but TR was: move to enemy, aim within the relative area, click 10 times until dead, repeat.   Do you think any other great games like CS or WCIII have that sort of monotony in them?  Why don't devs realize this?

Anyway, two thumbs down on Tabula Rasa for me.

at least he wasn't dumb like me and paid for the game.

not sure what everyone is finding so fun about the game.  if the aliens were players and there was some sort of pvp involved, it might be fun.  honestly, that's what this game feels like -- it's a pvp semi-fps game, but there's no pvp.

maybe something new has come out since last month; but, i barely lasted a week after buying it.

if it's something i have to play for ever and ever in order to get -- it's not for me.

i was honestly expecting something semi-groundbreaking, iike what UO had brought to us (back in the day) -- 'epic fail' on that.  i just wasn't impressed at all.

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

  • Plasuma!!!Plasuma!!! Member Posts: 1,872

I think the graphics in TR are acceptable by MMOG standards. The game play is a little shaky, but granted that it's new, I'm sure it'll get better after a few years of updates.

So really, the OP is complaining about animation? That's sad. Animations are easy to fix (I know from first-hand experience), but why didn't he complain about the AI? That's not broken and it's just awful. Only my opinion, though .

Seriously, the AI is so simplistic and slow, you can run circles around enemies or hide behind a tree for cover to coax them into following you to their deaths... like in Loony Tunes, literally hiding behind a sapling. The Thrax and other "intelligent" beings have the most problems with these "advanced tactical maneuvers". Striders, Stalkers, Predators, etc. are no exception to this either. You'd think that after 2000+ striders were killed by a single person, they'd change tactics or something.

The most valuable resource in any war (known as infantry) are utterly brain-dead on the Bane side; they'll make no attempt to find cover or gain a strategic advantage, and when you damage them enough, they walk a few meters in a random direction and stare at you blankly until you finish them off.

Honestly, what government sends inexperienced troops to a dangerous battle front they know they cannot currently win? (American political undertones intended, not directed towards troops, God bless them).

I've got some reasons to complain about the crafting, lag, unresponsive controls, PvP, repetitive content, buggy cloning system, and a couple other things... but honestly, they don't bother me so much that I'd write (another) lengthy criticism about them.

Whiny gripes aside, I hope they revamp the AI. If the current game is how they intend it to be played, then count me out.

Although I'd hate to leave such an awesome community...

The community on Cassiopeia is unexpectedly nice. If for any reason at all, I would choose to keep playing for that only.

This is quite a dilemma. Pay to play a boring game with good people, or don't play and abandon some would-be friends? Had the same problem with SWG, luckily the NGE made up everyone's mind for them
