Of course everyone will say WoW since they have the highest player base and every game is compared to it. What I am wondering is how would you rank say the top ten MMORPG's? Would it be based on player base? Popularity? What? Seems to me that player base tells me that most people like it therefore it is the most popular. So what would be your top ten mmorpg's?
Comments
2: Lotro / EQ 2 / EVE
5: Tabula Rasa
6: Guild Wars / Dofus
8: Vanguard
9: CoH & CoV (I count these as 1 game)
10: DAoC
And since this is a list made by me, the rankings are based on what I think those games deserve. Especially CoH & CoV could be higher on the list, and FFXI and Lineage 2 could deserve a spot on the list. But since I personally don't like those games, I didn't give FFXI and Lineage 2 spots at all, and listed CoH & CoV so low. Also Dofus might not deserve a place on the list at all otherwise, but I listed it because I liked its unique combat.
I hate WoW, LoTR, and all that fruity tolkien crap.
Here is my list of top 10 mmorpg of all time.

*Guild Wars would be on the list but I do not think of it as a true mmorpg, would be in my top 5.

And through my vigorous amount of Free Trial-ing, I have collected my top 10 Favorite MMOGs.
1-Runescape (Been playing this since '04, doubt I'd ever not have it as 1st)
2-PlanetSide (I love this game. I'm really expecting to buy the full version with Xmas gift cards)
3-EQ2 (I love this game, but their trial prevented me from seeing much of it)
4-ATITD3 (A great setting, no Combat, economics.. and a 24-hour trial?...)
5-WoW (I'm suscribed to it, but the game just seems very slow and repetitive..)
6-SWG (I got a trial of it the other week, I love it. Too bad it laggs so much that it easily crashes)
7-Anarchy Online(I love it, but I still haven't figured out how Crafting works..)
8-UO (The idea seems great, yet they require a credit card for a trial?)
9-City of Heroes/Villains (Pretty good, yet VERY boring.)
10- Ragnarok Online (Atmosphere was good, but that's about it.)
And through all of this I have found my #1 MMOG Pet Peeve.
Voice Overs.
All it does is make the game seem cornier, yet it adds a whopping 5GB onto most games, usually more than doubling the size and taking up loads more Hard Drive. (I'm talking to you EQ2, WoW, and SWG)
1) EvE Online
2) cookie cutter game 1 (with fewest bugs)
3) cookie cutter game 2 (with next fewest bugs)
4) So on
5) and so forth
Make a difference!
mm? EVE Online is your number 1 game?
What happened to those millions of Vanguard:SOH subscribers you predicted Copeland?
What happened to those millions of Vanguard:SOH subscribers you predicted Copeland?

3-> WoW... played but bored (got to 50... then closed account)
4-> Played a LOT of mmos... but the others just doesn't have enough merit to be in this list...
Currently playing DaoC + Assassin Creed while waiting for WARRR!!!!!!!!!
I hope it'll last more than a week (Assassin Creed)... lol
And don't forget, I'm only ONE gamer... don't flame for such a little list
You don't rate games on how popular it is, otherwise all of these lists will have shitty WoW on top and Halo would be the best FPS ever created.

5) Lineage 2
6) Anarchy Online

How about rating it in relation to critical acclaim and largest number of happy customers? By all accounts, regardless if a few people hate WOW, its more popular, has the most positive reviews, a larger and more active community, has brought the genre out from the nerd generation and obscurity, is influencing the genre like no other and is the most successful MMO of all time in every conceivable way. Sure some might hate it, but nobody important actually cares=)
Remember, Halo might be popular but it never received MORE critical acclaim than some other popular FPSs, esspecially on the PC where it actually matters . Its hard to argue against Halo being one of the best console shooters though. Popularity alone isn't a meter. You take everything into account.
There are still total of 10 games on my list. I just shared the second position between 3 games, so the one coming after them got naturally the fifth postion. And I shared sixth position between 2 games, so the one coming after them got the eight place.
1) Asheron's Call
2) Saga of Ryzom
3) Eve Online
4) Everquest 2
5) Lineage 1
6) Vanguard
7) Multi-users of Middle-Earth ( M.U.M.E. ) - One of the best Tolkien based MUDS ever -
8) Arctic MUD - Not an MMO, but still worth noting -
9) Runescape - Only because it proved you can have an MMO in a browser -
10) Lord of the Rings Online - Pretty graphics, but very very bland in gameplay -
1- Ultima Online
2- EVE
3- Perfect World
4- Tabula Rasa - Age of Conan - Warhammer
7- Final Fantasy
8- Coh/Cov
9- Granado Espada
10- Ragnarok 2
hi

"But nobody important actually cares"Important to who exactly? Important to you? Surely not, but important to me? Maybe, who knows.
Anyways, this thread is not about bashing WoW so please untwist your panties and just post your top 10 games. Just because not everyone in the world likes your precious game doesn't mean they hate it.
My list:
1. Everquest
2. Daoc
3. WoW (enjoyed my time in game, but quit by lvl 52)
4. Vanguard ( I like it. Me. My opinion)
5. Coh (played at release, but quit after I got really bored. Still enjoyed it while it lasted)
I'll stop at 5 because those are the only MMO's I've actually enjoyed. Played a lot more, but couldn't get into them. And for the record, you cannot judge a game by it's popularity. Judge it by YOUR OPINION of it or else you are just following blindly with the current trend. If you want to be a sheep...so be it.
1. WoW
2. Earth & Beyond
3. Star Wars ( Original version)
4. EVE
5. Vanguard
6. EQ2
I've only briefly tried others, not good enough to make my list.
