You may want to consider holding your judgement till the games come out... I know i've thought highly of games while still in development and everything is looking promising till they come out... such as Vanguard and RF Online.
1. Earth & Beyond 2. Star Wars Galaxies -pre NGE 3. City of Heroes 4. Final Fantasy XI 5. EVE Online 6. PlanetSide 7. WoW 8. Guildwars 9. L2 10. UO
"And after blizzard takes over the world, they are gonna gather a bunch of lemmings, sit on their fat asses near a cliff, and watch the little fuzzy bastards suicide dive into the ground below. . . . . all just for their own entertainment."
1. DAoC (first MMO to have me stop playing any other genre for weeks on end)
2. Planetside (shooter + world to be immersed in really was a very good time)
3. WoW (honestly I didn't enjoy myself the first time around due to me not actually wanting to play any MMO's at the time. Gave it a second shot this summer and am continueing to enjoy myself. As many things as some say it does wrong...it does more right than 99.99% of what's out there thus far.)
4. Guild Wars (such a fun casual game to play. Many may not consider this an MMO, but I do. I really like the class skill plug "N" play Magic the Gathering style of of character building. It only gets boring to me when I start thinking about what this game could've been or done. Oddly enough some of the things taked about for GW2 are actually some things things I had wished the original was. Can't Wait.)
5. CoH/CoV (I don't think any game on the market really can compare to this worlds character customization. It did however get bland to me after only a few months)
Beyond this list of five there are a few that stand out, but are imo a pick and choose your poison on how you are feelig on any given day.
Games are an matter of taste. If you want to make an top 10 then you make an "The majority is right" list. The game with most subs is the best. I know a lot of poeple disagree, but WoW is the best out there. It has most subs, so clearly it has done something better then the other MMOs out there. Whatever it is marketing, gameplay, price or just all of these.
Personly I strongly dislike WoW and it would not even appear in my top 5. I am more an person who like game where player interaction is importend.
1. Face of Mankind.
2. Wish (duo to the "live story telling team" it made it fun and importend to work together).
3. Planetside.
4. PoTBS.
5. Fallen Earth (just becouse no MMO released at this time is good enough to be in my "top" list)
I dont even have a list now that SWG is dead to me. Although those of you who might know me will know that Im sick of Fantasy MMOs so forgive me when I say this but if I had to pick I would say...
1. EQ2
2. LoTRO
3. Thats it all tho again I might whisper DaOC simply because it was my first MMORPG.
Ok Ok I HAVE a smaaaaaall list. A short list, if you will.
But only because I twisted my own arm to get it out of me.
How about rating it in relation to critical acclaim and largest number of happy customers? By all accounts, regardless if a few people hate WOW, its more popular, has the most positive reviews, a larger and more active community, has brought the genre out from the nerd generation and obscurity, is influencing the genre like no other and is the most successful MMO of all time in every conceivable way. Sure some might hate it, but nobody important actually cares=)
Critical acclaim, largely, is a bogus measure when comparing games from literally different decades. Many argue critics have begun giving generally higher reviews these days (I can't remember the last time something got under a 6/10 or equivalent review). If you take that into account, the fact that World of Warcraft only scored 5 (metacritic score: www.metacritic.com) points higher than Dark Age of Camelot did at their times of release (93 and 88, respectively), and though they're not decades apart, this is not a large margin if any margin at all. Subscribers are a lot higher, but you can't really take that into account when you're talking games from different decades, either. Doom had nowhere near the players Halo does, but at their releases, do you really believe Halo was a relatively better FPS?
EDIT- Oh, and my list:
1. Dark Age of Camelot
2. WoW
3. CoH/CoV
4. EVE-Online
5. Bioshock (Yea, it's NOT an MMO.. But that's a game that deserves to be on any "Top XX" list. Ever.)
I don't like any mmorpg currently but i'll list the games i have the fondest memories of......
1. Star Wars Galaxies - Launch until Jedi. I used to love this game back at launch cause i didn't have a clue what to do and the planets were sooooo huge. I remember how friendly the community was and was the best community ever in the history of mmorpgs. However Lucas Arts and SOE ruined it and we don't have to go into detail lol but they turned the community all bitter and twisted now. Star Wars Galaxies was missing alot at launch but it kept getting better until they added Jedi and after that all the game became about was Jedi every patch.
2. PlanetSide - Launch until Core Combat expansion. I used to love Planetside back in the day when people were playing it and you could always find a massive battle. I loved the glowing Vanu force blade too and i dunno back then it was just sooo amazing the size of the battles. However Core Combat came out and it was a crap expansion that showed the direction the game was heading.... no future so i quit. I came back to it the other month and it just feels very dated in terms of gameplay and graphics... the FPS genre has moved on since.
3. EverQuest 2 - Beta until December 2004. This game was sooo packed back then on that one server where you'd always have a group and it was lot harder than it is today too. I just remember sitting in the commonlands with my group and killing orcs and stuff for these quests and it was soooo amazing back then. WOW then came out and everyone left and the game died so there was no community anymore. Also because of the graphics back then it seemed AMAZING but now the game just looks very dated, it's amazing how it looks worse than older mmorpgs now.
4. World of Warcraft - Beta until early 2005 and then early 2007 for the expansion. This game is sooo polished and well balanced and it's soo easy to play and stress free. I loved the world of this game and the instances were really great specially the first one i ever saw in Westfall. The game really just has everything combat wise with great PVP and PVE, however it lacks on the crafting side of things.
5. EVE Online - 2 months. I loved the atmosphere of the game and it really was amazing specially after Trinity. Also i loved what the game was trying to do but it's just a shame the gameplay is sooo boring and theres no content.
And since this is a list made by me, the rankings are based on what I think those games deserve. Especially CoH & CoV could be higher on the list, and FFXI and Lineage 2 could deserve a spot on the list. But since I personally don't like those games, I didn't give FFXI and Lineage 2 spots at all, and listed CoH & CoV so low. Also Dofus might not deserve a place on the list at all otherwise, but I listed it because I liked its unique combat.
Your list goes 1 2 5. Wheres 3 and 4? Then it goes 6 8 9 10. Wheres 7? Are you sure you know how to count
He probably didnt do 3 and 4 because he counted everquest 2 and eve online as 3 and 4... and same with dofus
1. City of Heroes/Villains (I count them as one game, because...well they are).
2. WoW
3. Vanguard (as it is today, not at release)
4. Asheron's Call (Played that game for 4 years - Love the gameplay, hate the graphics)
That's it for me. I've played many others, but they all really sucked in my opinion for one reason or another. Pretty sad really when I think about it.
These 3 MMOs are too fast for my tastes, but they are YEARS ahead of the competition, on a design level. Shafting other players should be dating from the MUDs, not be in most moderns MMOs...yet...in most MMOs, you constantly have players shafting other players. This is old gen. EQ PvE servers comes with that idea a player can't shaft another...it was wrong...deadly wrong. Now, it seems the MMOs in general are unwilling to improve and adapt to the next level, where a player can't shaft another. Cooperation is why we are here, competition and PvP are merely a tiny aspect of socialisation (5th layer of the pyramid of human needs), the basic of the pyramid, security, requires that no player shaft another player.

At 2 he mention 3 games this is his way of skipping numbers:P
It also show he can count even tho you think he can not, its your wrong assumption about this, better look more carefull on how peeps reply then reply with a good constructive answer to the reply you reply to:P

Kinda looking forward to WAR and The Agency but don't have very high expectations.

1. Dungeons & Dragons Online
2. Everquest 2
3. Lord of the Rings Online
4. World of Warcraft
Really the only ones I've played enough to vote on.

4. Everquest pre-PoP
5. Vanguard
6. DAoC [the original]

WoW and fast food = commercial successes.
I neither play WoW nor eat fast food.

MMO's I have played (not necessary just tested), that I didn't like, which makes it impossible for me to actual rank them (Alfabetical order):
Anarchy Online, Archlord, City of Villans, D&D Online, Dark and Light, EVE, Fury, Linage2, Lotro, The Matrix, RF online, Silkroad, Tabula Rasa, WoW.

1) Guild Wars
2) The Saga of Ryzom
3) World of Warcraft
4) Eve Online
Short and sweet I don't think I've played anything else really deserving to be considered as "good"
Top 5 would be:
Ultima Online - Thats my first mmo and i still have my best memories from that game. That was pre-trammel.
Star Wars Galaxies - Pre-cu was a blast. I probably would still play this game if it wasn't changed.
Eve
Horizons - This game was lacking in so many areas, but still i had so much fun... Mostly, coz my great guild.
Guild Wars - My current game.
May Darkfall save us all!
That concludes my top 10, with reasoning why I gave them their respective spots.
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...

What happened to those millions of Vanguard:SOH subscribers you predicted Copeland?
I was wrong.
Vanguard was never going to have a million subs, anyone who has a brain coulda seen that.
I don't like any mmorpg currently but i'll list the games i have the fondest memories of......
