Looking for a Sandbox game

malachidarkmalachidark Member Posts: 93

I loved the way SWG did it pre-NGE, with their skill system. There any good games out there that have decent graphics, smooth gameplay, intense combat, and are a good sandbox mmo? I was looking at Tabula Rasa, but I hear it's not that great.

Currently Playing: Tabula Rasa

well my opinion is that when a sandbox game comes out they tend to be a little to sandboxey.... when i hear sandbox game i think of

    Second Life

    A tale in the Desert..

ive played alot of mmo's and honestly those two games are the only 2 that come to mind when you say "Sandbox"

unfortunately developers have passed over skills/sandbox/virtual world for linear/quest/WOW money.

we are a dying breed. new games are built for kids and casual gamers now. if you don't mind waiting check out fallen earth. many swg vets wait for it. lots of good features and is nearing beta.

i've been looking at that too, but I need a game to play now lol. Something to tide me over until WAR comes out (assuming it's good, but I thought Vanguard was going to be good too :P)

It's an open ended game.. Meaning its non linear.. you dont have to follow a storyline...

If you have ever played a game and felt like you got dumped into a multiplayer world with little understanding of what to do next.. you probably in a sandbox game

Pure sandbox, open PvP, player made settlements, intensive crafting system, FPS combat mode. Not really for the casual gamer though... this game will make you work for what you want. Over 700 square kilometers of playfield, only a fraction of that is currently inhabited. Only downside is that it's made by a small independent firm (but that's also a plus, no selling out like SWG) and population is a little low now. But if you have a guild and some dedicated people you can carve an empire for yourself! The possibilities are literally endlesss, virtually every item is craftable (starting from raw resources to finished products), and it's 110% non linear.

    Wurm Online possibly?

The biggest MMOG sandbox I've been in, minus Second Life. (If you even count that as an MMOG)

I love it, only bad thing is the lag. But that's just my semi-crappy computer.

    Picture a sandbox.

One guy brings a shovel, another brings a pail, and a 3rd has some water.  All 3 get together and start doing something like build a sand scupture or just throw sand at each other.  There are not too many rules and there is no one telling them that they must make a sand castle in 30 minutes or they lose.  It is all up to them.

    In my opinion:

In order for it to work the person that owns the sand box has to dump more toys into the sand box or the 3 will get bored and leave.  The concept of an open ended game where YOU make the quests is not in keeping with most games and folks have a hard time playing in it.  Another problem is if one of the 3 doesn't show up or you get 2 of the same kind - like 2 guys with water and no pail.  So the sandbox owner has to make it so that the guy with the pail will be missed but he isn't vital to have fun.  He gets left out and starts screaming that he is going to leave if he doesn't get some love - so the sand box owner gives him a spoon which is sorta like a shoval so now the shoveler gets pissed off.  Then 1 of 2 things happens - each patch makes one person more vital then the next ever increasing into infinity or everyone is given everything they need in the sandbox (which for some is a game killer.)

The key to a sandbox is that you should always have options and the ability to change your options when ever you wish.

"The liberties and resulting economic prosperity that YOU take for granted were granted by those "dead guys"
