First i must state the obvious -
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, no matter what game you will find some who LOVE it and others who HATE it.
Also Murphy''s Law applies. Those who hate a game spend more time whining on forums about it then the people who love it - they are still playing
Games i like include basically any age of sail product that was worth a damn since Sid Mieirs Pirates !
I also tried and liked many aspects of Eve online and Earth & Beyond.
I also enjoy a good Sub simulation
So now that you see where my tastes are you can estimate the value of my opinion -
I love ship based games and this is one !
Review- Potbs is the best on the market . Name one age of sail product that is better.
i Hate Korean grinders so naturally i hated Bounty Bay or Sword of the New World as its called now.
If you are a fan of ship games, if you long for a level of complexity missing in most MMO's on the market, Then go try this game. Its in open beta right now so try it while its free. Cant beat that price anywhere.
99% of the people whining on this forum about it are comparing it to other MMORPG's they have played THAT ARE NOT EVEN IN THE SAME GENRE.
Im glad its instanced because i dont want to sail for 2 weeks to get across the map. Fantasy games work well that way but i refuse to play Eve because of all the dead time associated with long travel times.
I think the boarding combat is light years ahead of other ship based products including all current ship based MMORPG's on the market.
Compare it to its own kind.
It has bugs, all MMORPG's do, yada, yada, yada.
Most are worse at launch this one is still beta.
What more is there to say? I have been hopeing for a good age of sail multiplayer since sid mieirs first started the age of sail genre back in the late 80"s early 90's.
pre-order here i come.

nice post, enjoyed reading something positive about this game
yup, EVE time travel kills any will to play the game, so instancing rocks.

With jump bridges and clone jumping travel times are a non-issue in EVE with a bit of foresight.
Instancing is exactly why I am staying out of POTBS that and it's involved with SOE.
I personally like a more realistic MMO where you just cant insta port anywhere you want.
Sorry but I'll never play another SOE game no matter what it is.
Fallen Earth is a MMO I am most looking forward to.
SHOHADAKU
But for the record, you can't instaport "anywhere you want" in PotBS--you can book passage only to a port in which you already have a ship docked (limited to 5 for most, 6 if you're a freetrader with the appropriate skill). When you do that, only your personal belongings go with you--no cargo, no ship parts, no ammo, etc.
It is no different than clone jumping in EVE. But then you don't like that--or maybe you do. Hard to tell based on your words.
Apply lemon juice and candle flame here to reveal secret message.
its all based on people's goals in my opinion, if person strives for nation domination or becoming successful and rich trader to help nation domination then that person will like Potbs. However if person's goal on obtaining ub3r g3ar or having his guild wtf pwn everybody , then nope its not for you sorry.

It's still rough in some areas, I like the art design, but some of the animations are stiff. After a week away I had a good sized patch to download last night (not sure when they patched it) and I've gotta say the swordplay has gotten yet another level of polish on it so most of my worries are going away.
The crafting is complex and will require cooperation at the higher levels yet is casual friendly with the way labor is stored up in real time. As for the PvP, someone else could comment better on that as I haven't done more than dabble with it, but overall I like the RvR system and the fact that conquest have meaning.
The big thing to me is that FLS is putting out a product that is fun to play now while keeping an eye to the future. I'm getting the itch to go back to Eve and I know I'll try Warhammer and/or AoC but I think I'll be playing Potbs for some time even if I pick up a sub to something else.
First of all, I would like to tell you that PotBS is not a SOE game, SOE is only a "mid man" in this whole project. And please, don't tell me that after a month or two they will buy Flying Lab Software, overtake the game and kill it.
Second, FLS is one of the best DEV's i've seen as of yet. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a PotBS fanboy, it just amazes me how this company is managed and they work, and how positive and clear is their attitude towards community.
This game is really a "niche" one. Fighting for your nation, being a crafter who's supporting your "troops" against other nations, it all sounds epic to me, it's something new. Well I realized that this game is not for me yet, so I'll wait for a couple of months and see what happens (Too busy with real life to actively pay for a game). Even though I can say this is a really good and original game.
All i can say is it's DDO on water.
I have to agree with the OP on this one...I like the game, and no matter how many people bash it , it will not change my mind. People need to stop comparing it to other games, since there is no other game out there like it. As far as SOE goes...get over it....they did not create the game and they do not have any control of the content.
POTBS has a thumbs up from me.
Aye I agree with the OP, the nice thing is, as with my society in the making all of so far (just out of luck) are history buffs and hold important positions (or will) in RL. What does this have to do with the game? Allot actually, most people staying aboard for the full game are the hardcore old time historian buffs or the new wave of intellectuals who want more out of their MMO then the repetitive "kill that boar 1000x" .
For once I am glad to be part of a game that will not cater to the masses, while I am sure the devs want as many people to join as possible, I am glad to see this game going more towards the fans of the era and more hardcore historian buffs. To me in the end, this will make a more mature (mentally) player base and allot more fun to participate in.
Can't wait! salu!
"The monster created isn't by the company that makes the game, it's by the fans that make it something it never was"
Potbs is for Sea Dogs - its got no competition in that respect, Potco doen't come close.
Bloodthursty melee landlovers play Conan.
Funny you mention that game, the online conan game will be another I will be playing. This is actually the first time ever I will participate in two MMO's at the same time! I dread how one will effect the other , but both have stuff I really want. I am a huge fan of the book series and from what I read the online game is going to be great, sorry but the kid in me comes out when I see "HEADCHOP!" lol, so for the fun land lover I definitly going to be on the Conan bandwagon, but POTBS just has that other part in me about history and that era I can't pass up. The game is fun enough as is and will only get better. But alas yes, I will be in Conan too and to the fans of Warhammer, sadly I am a huge fan of the universe and the mintures etc of the past for me. But I don't see the justice being done threw Mythic on that title even thou I am a Mythic fan, it just isn't warhammer the way I know it to be.
My 2 cents,
salu!

" Yawn "
Anyone remember the trade routes in Earth and Beyond?
"Hey, fly from one corner of the universe to the other. Go!"
It took a while, and there was very, very little interaction, a few clicks here and there for warping... but for some reason it was enjoyable...
Sorry, little off topic, but ya'll were talking about travel times and someone even mentioned E&B

I actually like the travel in PotBS but comparing it's booking of travel to jump clones is highly innacurate. You can only jump clone once every 24hrs. You can 'book travel' as much as you like (so far, they may change it).

I also agree with the OP.
I've been in open beta for over a week now and I'm having a blast!
What baffles me is the urge of those that really need to bash the game no matter what. The "OMG this game is the suck!!11!!" type threads seem to be coming mostly from those that didn't even take the time to properly look around in the game. A lot of those people actually make me think it might be too complex for them to understand.
This game really has some breaking new things in there. The economy is brilliant, the whole concept is fairly new (similar, but definately not the same as EVE), PvP with a purpose (like in DAoC) instead of just big duel type clashes that don't do anything to the game but allow you to say you killed another char (big deal, and what's next? ), and a new type of environment. Thank god there's no elves, gnomes, trolls, dragons, flying cows or whatnot in that game. Finally something that uses some reality and on top of it all also uses historically accurate content. Low and behold, one could actually learn something from playing this game about history and sailing.
Seriously, this is an awesome game. Maybe not for everyone, but it definately doesn't "suck". Those who claim that really need a communication crash course, because obviously they have no clue what that expression means. Maybe they don't like the game, the concept or the setting, but that is still no reason to bash a game just for the sake of bashing it.
Give it a try, it's in open beta now so you can do so for free. Give it some time (don't judge anything unless you played at least two profs to level 15) and then see if you think it would be fun to play or not. Since after all, that is what it is about: is it fun for you to play.
For me it definately is, so I'll be playing for sure. This coming from someone who played the major MMOs over the past decade does mean that I at least have seen plenty of others to compare with, and trust me, this one will not let you down when you like what you see at the beginning.

being the best of garbage, isn't a virtue.
Just because it is in the genre of what you've been wishing for doesn't mean that it is a quality product. This is unfortunate but I'm hoping that eventually dev's will learn and realize that buggy and unpolished releases in the MMO genre are no longer acceptable.

I am an adult, and i live in the real world, a pragmatist not an idealist. We would all like MMO devs to produce a finely polished product, yet they dont and never will.
I repeat what i said previously with added clarification to any reading this -
this game is in open beta, aside from a bit of polish what you see is what it will launch with. As it stands, if released right now, Its in far better shape then most MMO's ive seen at launch.
And ive seen many from EQ, DAOC, Anarchy online, EVE, Earth and Beyond, SWG, EQ2, D&D online, and WOW although i dont know why.
Everyones comp is different, your milage may vary.
As for your comment about being "the best piece of garbage"-
Dude, if you dont like the genre why do you bother to post here? I dont spend time on the WOW boards telling them how much i detest that boring piece of drivel.
to each his own, we all dont have to share your tastes, i want to be different.
peace.
So if a game youve been dieing to play is close to launch and they ask SOE to make the game discs and host the servers but they have no impact on what the devs do will you just say oh shit better luck next time? They can host servers and make and advertise the game some compaines cant handle it. Now if they had SOE devs on the PotBS team telling them what to do then thats reason to say no way but if they dont why not try.
Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.
If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms

Don't waste your breath Andur. He's either full of crap and will be playing it within a month despite his claims or he's being honest and is so blinded by his hatred of SOE that he's willing to allow that to impact his reasoning skills.
Personally I don't plan to buy this, at least not right away, but SOE doesn't even factor in that decision. And I have plenty of reasons, as both a former Planetside and a former SWG player, to detest them every bit as much, if not more than, anyone else on these forums.
PotBS is definitely worth looking at. IMO it'd be best to wait for it to be out a few months then pick up a free trial. I personally don't think it's really quite ready for release yet.

*yawn*
Did anyone hear that?
No?
Oh ok, I thought I heard something.
Nice summary from the OP. I've met several people who really enjoyed the beta test and like this game, but not too many who think it has monthly-pay staying power. I personally don't like it, for the reasons you cited: it's really a bit more of a sim game, and frankly feels more like Sid Meier's Pirates to me than anything else, with some WoW-style 3rd person run around thrown in.
I might give this game another shot....naw. Too much else out there that's "more my thing." But there are many others who will dig it, I suspect.

Referred to the OP`s headline:
Where is your proof?
the only thing i have trouble with is the ship combat takes Forever. Sorry to say i think that Pirates of the Caribbean online is alittle better game. Just my opinion tho.
I question your research and statements when I see you can't tell the difference between a ship based game ( Voyage Century and its pay-to-play clone Bounty Bay Online ) and a land based game ( Grenado Espada and its pay-to-play/now free clone Sword of the New World ).
