Please - I know your initial response will be to childishly flame away. For those serious about the subject though:
Why do you hate WoW so much? No one can deny that it has lasting quality as it is at 9 million subs. Even if those are skewed stats the numbers don't lie. So why is the minority so vocal about downing it?
I personally am bored with it yet I cannot find another game of even close quality. I have tried them all and they all fall short.
Any insight?
Do you think that everything that has 9 mil subs or that majority appraise is a good thing?
what i think is you obviously dislike the game, that is your opinion, but for the 9mil or whatever, they obviously love the game for some reason or another. Its all just different opinions, your opinion is no more correct then there's is.
You have to understand that Thillian trolls every single WoW/Blizzard topic and flames good, smart posters like you Scalebane for speaking with common sense.
Most normal people would think "Huh, over nine million people play this game, there has to be something good about it" and then they either read up on it or download the trial and find out themselves.
Fact is, Thillian believes his opinion is "more right" then any one who posts something positive about WoW.

Originally posted by Guitano anything in game that requires you to do somthing is a grind.
This is a pretty broad accusation, and pretty much debunks anything else you might have to say about MMOs. I don't know about you, but I like to actually, you know, PLAY the game.
For those of you who don't like to "do something" for fear of grinding, you should seriously check out Progress Quest, or Idle RPG.
Uninspiring combat, 'Quests' that have been designed without any thought (why must i keep killing 10 of this, 20 of that, 30 of this? Where is the adventure? The levelling up is like a second job - grind grind grind.
I played Warcraft at launch and decided to leave as it just was not appealing. I've returned to it as I am researching it and still can' t figure out why people play it. I guess it appeals to those who don't really fancy anything too complex and is easy to pick up and play - which WOW certainly is.
However, its lacks any depth and I know many lvl 70 players who have left but the game is always attracting new players thanks to its pick up and play methods.
Since it's arrival, the MMO genre has changed. Take Star Wars Galaxies at launch. Yes it had its flaws but the sandbox game appealed to the masses. Over 300,00 signed up for Galaxies - doesnt sound like the dizzy heights of Warcraft but these were good numbers prior to its arrival. Only the fact the game was released too early and the failure of the dev team to juggle the demands of balancing the many professions saw it all but clone Warcraft and see its well documented downfall.
Everyone now is trying to copy the warcraft formula - look at Lord of the rings online - and that is bad for the genre. Developers need to be creative. Players don't want a grind fest or utterly pointless quests to complete to get a decent level of XP. This is why I 'dont like' but dont hate, warcraft.
The generic quests you described could be found in most MMOs out there before the release of WoW.
I don't dislike WoW.. Nor do I "hate" it.. It's just a DIFFERENT type mmo, thats all.. What I do however dislike, is its fan base who ALWAYS refer to its sub counts and player base as positives in a debate, and never ONCE coming up with anything VALID to say about the game they claim to be the absolute best but "WoW 0wz j00!"
For a game to be so coveted, why can we ever have a debate session without using the "sub count" claim as the only backing? Is this REALLY the ONLY good point these "fans" see in this game? I've been honestly seeking a true opinion about why people find this game to be the absolute god of mmo's..
So to any "true" wow fan, please draw your sword and approach me.. I have a sharp tongue and a mind ready to pick some answers from you..
First one is,
What is it that you see in WoW that is not present in any other games? And what is it that eludes you to believe it to be the absolute best game ever?
The whole fanboi sentiment is just bullshit to be frank. Please stop using that ridiculous word... "fanboi"... it's juvenile. It's perfectly possible to like more than one game, and most of us do. The fanboi argument is meaningless drivel put forward by people who like to discount a persons opinion just because he argues positive points about a game.
God forbid some of us actually enjoy the games we play.
There is no legion of WoW fanbois "hating on WAR". It's just a lot of people that are understandably cynical when it comes to a overhyped MMO. WAR is hyped. It may be good, it might not be. Simply predicting that WAR might suck is as proper opinion to have as predicting that it will be the second coming.
Seriously, WoW has nothing to worry about. Even if it loses 8 million subscribers, some server merges later and it's still more popular than most MMOs. I don't really buy the argument that WoW players are scared that another game will come along and be better.
Do you think that the average WoW player really gives a shit about whether the game loses subs or not? Even the most loyal Blizzard supporters would actually welcome a game that's overall better than WoW. People like good games.
Unreleased games are not good games, they are the product of marketing departments. WAR is not a game, it's a PR campaign, until it's released. It makes far more sense to enjoy the games that are actually OUT now, than commit yourself to a game that could turn out to be a dud, as we've seen so often in the last few years.
At many points in my MMO career I've been called a fanboy of the game of my choice, simply because I said why I liked it. Everquest fanboy, EVE fanboy, WoW fanboy. Perhaps I'll be a WAR fanboy in a year's time, whatever.
But yeah, I think that WoW is the best game out there at the moment. Probably will be for a long time. Have fun anticipating games, but don't get your knickers in a twist when WoW players fail to be impressed by yet ANOTHER UNRELEASED OVERHYPED MMO.
Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

First of all there is a legon of WoW fanboys, just look on the WAR forums the most who are complaining about WAR are playing WoW and are saying that WoW is a much better game, that they can't know, because like you said, WAR is still developing.
Second, you can't say one mmorpg is "better" then the other if they are nothing like eachother. You can't say WoW is the best game out there, because you can't compare a PvE based mmorpg with a PvP based mmorpg.
Anyway, people always say: "WoW is a good game, because it has 9 million players". In my opinion that is bullshit. It is a good game, because they look at other games and made that better. WoW is a PvE mmorpg and most people are playing mmorpg for the PvE.
I think WAR will be a good game, because the devs are listening to the beta testers and they won't release the game unfinished. It will never reach millions of players, because it is all about PvP and i think it is good for the community and for the game experience if there aren't millions of players.
It's a good game, Its also the BEST game for the beginner to MMO's, I'll admit that I'm a little sick of it just because of playing it off and on for 2 years.
Why the Hate ?
Because most ppl. are burned out of it like me thats all. Most all will tell you they hate it but they follow up with comments like when I hit 70. what does tell you ? There done, but they play untill they can't stand it any more.
I'm starting to hate it too, but I talked a friend at work into playing WoW and now I'm stuck for a bit, I'll move on again but I'll never bash WoW just because I over played it.
People hate on WoW because it's the biggest MMO right now.
People hate on WAR because it's the most hyped MMO right now.
Personally I hate fanboys / fanbois. They're annoying, impossible to reason with, and generally completely insufferable, even when they're on your 'side' (especially when they're on your 'side' because now you're their 'friend' and you must be reminded every 10 seconds of why the other team sucks)
Part of the reason is because its the most popular and people like to hate on whatever is popular at the time. Another reason is because so many people have played WoW at one time or another for varying periods of time your going to get people that are for whatever reason disgruntled.
As for blaming WoW for the state of mmo's today, its not Blizzard's fault that other developers want to copy and attain some of WoW's success. They have to realize, though, that they need to do something to seperate themselves from the WoW model because those that like WoW aren't likely to be lured away in favour of a copycat game. Theres a few lesson other devs can learn from Blizz, though. Like making the game accessible to new players, like not having steep ass system requirements, like having things (mostly) work the way its supposed to work.
Theres a lot that I don't like about WoW but imo theres nothing out there thats good enough to draw me away. I think many other people feel the same way. I know when a better game comes along I'll happily drop WoW and play the new game.
Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?
Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.
The hate towards WoW is easily explainable. It is considered the best, only because most people play it. However it is far from the best, it's simply the easiest and most accessible. Kids of 4 years of age can play it, I've personally seen an 8 year old massacre others (he was allience, and killed horde, and we all know horde generally PvPs better).
There is zero character progression, completely linear, thus it can't even be named RPG.
Item oriented game play: the only way to compete is to give up your life. Actually casuals, who like PvP, utterly hate this game, because you need to grind, to have a chance. I fall in this category. Any battle is predictable.
No skill invovled to play, just routine, no thinking required.
And most importantly, we hate WoW because of what it did yo the MMO standard. It bastardized a genre. It took away freedom, and replaced it with theme park ride. Killed crafting and character development. What in fact we hate most, is that other developers try and copy the success of WoW.
Fact is, WoW was only successful because it was an entry level MMO, the next big hit will definitely be a more complex one, but developers haven't realized that yet. Asians and kids are the other reasons.
I played WoW and enjoyed it.... but I will hate on WoW all day long because I'm sick to death of all the WoW lovers constantly overstating how great the game is. (Apparently Blizzard invented the MMO, the Internet, Fantasy RPG's, etc... who knew?)
And honestly I couldn't care less how many subs WoW has. That is not an indicator of quality.
I mean American Idol has been the top viewed show on TV for 3 years running but it's hardly what I would call quality programming.. and I don't at all feel compelled to watch it just because everyone else is.
And just because WoW has the most subs of a single game doesn't mean those *not* playing WoW are the minority. There are a great many MMO's out there.
And to be honest - many of the best MMO's cater to niche markets and have some of the smallest subs.
I've heard this before and I agree with it - WoW would have a tiny fraction of the subs they do if the game had been made by an unknown company instead of Blizzard. It's not the gameplay that sold most of the subs, it's the name.
And I seriously doubt you've tried *all* the other MMO's out there. You most likely don't even *know* of all the other MMO's out there. That said, if you are seriously looking for a new MMO to play, you have to go into them with an open mind. Explore the game for what it is and look for aspects you like. I have never found an MMO that did not have some aspects of it that I could enjoy. If you head into one and start compairing it instead of evaluating it based on its own merits, you'll never find one you like. Too often people go into new games looking for things to hate instead of things to enjoy.
I played WoW and enjoyed it.... but I will hate on WoW all day long because I'm sick to death of all the WoW lovers constantly overstating how great the game is. (Apparently Blizzard invented the MMO, the Internet, Fantasy RPG's, etc... who knew?)
Oh come on, that's complete rubbish and you know it. Nobody is saying Blizzard invented the MMO, or even close to implying it. Who said that? Nobody fecking said it. Point me to someone who said it, and I'll give you a cookie. This is the textbook definition of a strawman argument. It's complete BS.
The people that claim that WoW players only play WoW because we don't know any better are being petty and ignorant. We've got more choices for MMOs that EVER before, including some of the biggest IPs on the planet. Star Wars... Lord of the Rings... Dungeons and Dragons... do you really think that WoW players really haven't heard of these games?
Why do you pretend to have some sort of hidden insight into "real MMOs" that we do not? Why do you assume that all WoW players have never tried another MMO? Are there not players of other MMOs that haven't played other games either? Have you got any evidence to support the notion that WoW has a larger proportion of MMO noobs than other games? Why... old-school UO vets weren't exactly spoiled for choice back in the day of that game you know.
The "MMO-noob" argument is thusly completely irrelevant.
Also, there are many old-school MMOers that are quite happy in WoW right now. I'm one of them. Many old Everquest guilds moved onto WoW and stayed there. Hell, even the developers have old-school MMO backgrounds coming from UO and EQ.
The justification to hate WoW because other people like it is ridiculous. I see very few exaggerated claims by WoW players to the game's qualities. It may seem exaggerated because the game has almost universal critical acclaim and widespread appeal from old-school and casual gamers alike.
The people that play WoW are human beings, we are not sent to Blizzard indoctrination camps to become zealous WoW monks. Why must detractors of WoW attempt to turn opinion of the game into a dichotomy, a battle of two sides, good vs the evil WoW players? It's utterly stupid.
I don't buy the arguments put forth in this thread, by those attempting to justify a hatred or contempt for the game and it's players. To me this seems to be an extremely narrow minded view not even close to reality. I think a person like me, who tends to appreciate the value of several MMOs, not the least WoW, is in danger of having detractor's minds implode with the sheer impossibility of it
Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...
I've heard this before and I agree with it - WoW would have a tiny fraction of the subs they do if the game had been made by an unknown company instead of Blizzard. It's not the gameplay that sold most of the subs, it's the name.
That is a fine theory, but it certainly didn't apply to Sony, Microsoft, Square Enix, Electronic arts, Lucas Arts, Disney, Sega, Star wars, The sims, Everquest II, The Matrix, Dungeon and Dragons, Lord of the Rings, Final Fantasy, Ultima X and Asheron's Call 2. Some of the biggest names in the MMOs, Computer games and just straight out some of the largest IPs in the world.
Looking at that list I can only think of two that did well and weren't plagued by performance, bad design choices, quality and/or gameplay issues out of the gate causing drops in subscriber rates just short months after release. It is like reading a list of mediocre underachievers and some of the worst examples in the genre. The market was obviously ready to explode, but no one had taken the time to make the right game yet despite some of the biggest power houses giving it a try.
The theory that people just mindlessly buy this game simply for the name is misleading at best. The game hasn't been toping sales charts for three years and continuing to gain and retain subscribers on namepower. The game delivers several important gameplay aspects.
Those aspects are not impossible to replicate on any kind of game be it space, sandbox, swords and orc whatever. I'm not talking about cloning WoW either.
I won't say I hate WoW, I enjoyed it for a good long while, although I do dislike it for the following reasons.
1) nothing to do in the end game but raid or pvp.
2) raiding is boring, same repeatative script each week, and the lock outs are annoying.
3) Only 4 pvp maps, world pvp is dead, arena is a joke (IMO).
4)Both raids and pvp equal out to just a grind for gear and nothing else, do it as fast as possible as blizz is going to have the replacement set out in 3 months. In raids this meant you just copied the first successful script that comes out and in pvp it means the 2 teams don't bother actually fighting and try to end the match as fast as possible (especially true for AV)
and Finally (and most importantly)
5) The WoW community, it's player base, has a rotten attitude. The game's design (gear greed) does not encourage a friendly play enviroment, but conversely a 'every toon for themselves' one. This makes most of the prominate players act like jerks. If you want to see what I'm talking about go surf the WoW forum for an hour or so.

well f'n said bro, you nailed it, i'm glad theres a few smart people left in the mmo community
honestly, all the new jacks think WoW is where it began, and thats another big annoyance, sorry.... your crap game isn't nothing, and regardless of the population, the game will never flourish like old school mmos
If by flourish you mean be much more commercially successful - like WoW - then no, your wrong. Fact is not other game has flourished as WoW has and idiots just can't seem to accept reality as it stares them in the face.

I have played wow since launch and have had my times where I loved it and times where I hated it. I really enjoyed the leveling I have leveled a Undead Mage 70 (Epic Geared),70 Tauren Shaman,70 Orc Hunter,44 Blood Elf Priest, and a 36 Undead Warrior. I did not care for the End game Raiding after I reached 70 do to the fact I had already raided Hardcore Pre-BC only to see all the effort gone with the expansion. Went ahead and did the PVP grind and watched all the players mindlessly playing the BG's over n ' over. Currently Playing on Alliance Gnome Lock 54,and Human Pali 32,Dwarf Hunter. Now if you have read all that I just wrote it pretty much describes what wow is all about. WoW needs an End game like Daoc. or Lineage badly. I would have left wow long ago had a game that interested me was released. If $OE Had not ruined Star Wars Galaxies I would have never even played WoW.

Nailed it. Especially about the bastardisation of the MMORPG genre. I can only hope WAR will be a saving grace.
The wow hate stems from the idea that it does not innovate! None the less, it is the king as far as User Interface goes but still nothing that blizzard came up with themselves.
How about the "this item willnot be traded box". They came up with that.
How about the Quest bosses have no loot of farmable value outside an instancve, they came up with that. What about factional language barriers., I can't remeber all the other MMO's doing that. The list of innovations in WoW is endless. They didn't come up with the first MMO, I'll give you that, and they didn't invent fantasy, if that's what you mean. The devil is in the detail. WoW is the single most innovative MMO on the market.
What about factional language barriers., I can't remeber all the other MMO's doing that
DAoC.
Every mmo makes innovations in their own way, the question is how big an innovation they are. WoW has made some minor innovations but more I'd say it was their design decisions for instance regarding casuality that is more significant. Creativity wise I think they could do an awful lot more than they have to push the genre forward. (Though I'd speculate that as later WoW expansions come that will seek to draw back subscribers then that is when some of the bold new ideas are going to come along)
Please - I know your initial response will be to childishly flame away. For those serious about the subject though:

Do you think that everything that has 9 mil subs or that majority appraise is a good thing?
What other game has 9 Millions subs? Tard.
LMAO what we have here folks is your classic WoW TArd not comprehending what hes reading and leaping to defend HIS game.. Good thing there is a game like WoW out there for you to play .. cant see you comprehending much else...
Except that he is right. You can't compare WoW's phenominal success to any other, because no other MMO has even come close. Trying to compare something that exists to something that doesn't and then basing your opinion of it upon that comparison........ just makes you look like a retard. Devoid of reason.
Now I know thare there are many fruitbats out there that do not equate a products success with it's quality, or it's price, but only it's availability and marketing.....only all the other titles are available and marketed too. And no matter how well marketed a poor product is, it won't sell well.
So to answer answer Tard1's question, do I think that everything that has 9 million subs or that the majority appraisal is a good thing....
In general, that is exactly what I think, there are the very odd exceptions, but by and large things that lots of people enjoy are likely to be enjoyable. Things that's lots of people praise are likely to be good.
Football, Volkswagons, chocolate, beer. All examples of majority likes and appraisal. If you haven't tried any of them, you should. Chances are you will be into them.
And quite frankly a product that breaks sales records does so because it is good. To think otherwise wins you an instant "tard award". If you are the kind of person that looks for a product that doesn't sell well, or favours a product that recieves poor reviews from your peers, you are an idiot. Plain and simple.
That's not to say you enjoy WoW, or that everyone will enjoy WoW. Perhaos you don't. I'm sure you aren't alone in that. But failure to recognise the obvious makes you a poor judge.
If I had to choose a judgement, if I had to accept the recommendation of a total stranger, I think I would pass on yours and go for the safer bet of 9 million current users and the tens of millions of purchasers worldwide. Afterall the majority of gamers aren't tards. It's just a few.
Why do people hate WoW? Apart from the jaded ex wower's, a phenomenon found in all titles, with all gamers recently divorced... I think people basicly enjoy being rebelli
ous.
Wow another one all those big words in a response and yet you didnt comprehend what you read ..Go back to WoW ...
I played WoW and enjoyed it.... but I will hate on WoW all day long because I'm sick to death of all the WoW lovers constantly overstating how great the game is. (Apparently Blizzard invented the MMO, the Internet, Fantasy RPG's, etc... who knew?)

It is not complete rubbish. I have indeed heard people making those wild claims and more. There are people out there who are that ignorant. It would be impossible to point you to the things that have been said since I saw them in game.
And I never said I hated WoW. In fact, I don't hate it and I've thought a few times about re-activating my account so I can play with those friends of mine that still play it. But even as someone who enjoys the game, I get tired of hearing about it all the time. And that's where the "hate on WoW" comes in. Even though I don't hate it, I speak harshly about the game in reaction the the constant WoW bombardment I'm forced to endure.
What I was trying to get across in my original post was that most people I have encountered don't hate WoW nearly as much as it appears they do (and the same goes the other way). It's simply an escalation problem. You start off with one guy who likes the game and one guy who doesn't care for it.. and 10 minutes of discussion later the first guy starts sounding like a "fanboi" and the other a "hater "because they've gone through a series of one-upping the other guy on their position.
That and when you are playing another game and someone comes in and starts talking about how much better WoW is than the game you prefer to play - you feel as though your game choice is being attacked. That automatically puts you on the defensive and a heated exchange is virtually inevitable at this point.
I never said that WoW players "don't know any better". I never said that I had "hidden insight into "real MMO's". I never said I thought "all WoW players have never tried another MMO". Several of my old EQ1 friends went on to WoW. I played WoW. It was my 6th MMO. Not sure where you're getting this from. What was that you said about a straw man argument?
By the way, when WoW released the entire MMO market expanded overnight. So it's pretty clear that for many WoW players it was their first MMO. Even a small amount of research will show this to be true - and will also show that WoW's success was largly do to the popularity of Blizzard's other games. At launch WoW probably did have more MMO noobs than any other game since EQ1.. but just as with EQ1, that's probably no longer the case.
I know the WoW developers played EQ. In fact, I still have the article where they said that EQ was too hard and bragged about how much easier their game was going to be.
Comments
what i think is you obviously dislike the game, that is your opinion, but for the 9mil or whatever, they obviously love the game for some reason or another.
Fact is, Thillian believes his opinion is "more right" then any one who posts something positive about WoW.
we dont hate wow, we just got bored
This is a pretty broad accusation, and pretty much debunks anything else you might have to say about MMOs. I don't know about you, but I like to actually, you know, PLAY the game.
For those of you who don't like to "do something" for fear of grinding, you should seriously check out Progress Quest, or Idle RPG.
For the same reason people "hate" WAR. They don't want to see that their game isn't as huge as WoW is, or WAR is going to be.
WAR is getting bashed by WoW Fanboi's
WoW is getting bashed by all kinds of fanbio's
Anyway just ignore them, because everything what they say is negative and not relevant.
Well said! And from a fellow shadow priest as well.
Merry Christmas!
This is why the hate !!!!
All the WoW hate is because of all the WoW love.
Very well put, I agree.
well f'n said bro, you nailed it, i'm glad theres a few smart people left in the mmo community
honestly, all the new jacks think WoW is where it began, and thats another big annoyance, sorry.... your crap game isn't nothing, and regardless of the population, the game will never flourish like old school mmos
Why the wow hate?
The wow hate stems from the idea that it does not innovate! None the less, it is the king as far as User Interface goes but still nothing that blizzard came up with themselves.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
How about the "this item willnot be traded box". They came up with that.
How about the Quest bosses have no loot of farmable value outside an instancve, they came up with that. What about factional language barriers., I can't remeber all the other MMO's doing that. The list of innovations in WoW is endless. They didn't come up with the first MMO, I'll give you that, and they didn't invent fantasy, if that's what you mean. The devil is in the detail. WoW is the single most innovative MMO on the market.
Oh come on, that's complete rubbish and you know it. Nobody is saying Blizzard invented the MMO, or even close to implying it. Who said that? Nobody fecking said it.
