I have heard that some ppl have problems if they pre-select the character they are going to play in the upper left hand corner. This cause the game to immediately log into the specified server with the specified character. If you set the drop down box to "select character", the game will start and pause to allow you to select the character you want to play. I think without this 'pause' the game will crash for some ppl.
There are a million other reasons you might be having problems (loggin into any MMORPG) . There is a technical help section on the official forums.. I would post your problem there and you may get your answer back from a GM.

1. Just under the "PLAY" button, make sure the drop down says "select character". If it is blacked out, use the drop down to select "select character".
2. Delete cache files (if you have any):
Start>Computer>C:>Program Files>Sony>Vanguard>bin>Caches
2 files that could cause this (pixel and vertex shaders). Delete both files. This folder may be empty if you never actually loaded anything before crashing.
3. Launch game and run a full file scan (accessed through preferences.).
Also try this:
1. Right click the shortcut
2. Choose properties
3. Choose compatability
4. Check the "Run as administrator" if it can be done
Vista is weird with this. You should also do this on all program files in the Vanguard installation folder. Also be sure to right click the Vanguard folder and make sure that something in there isnt Write protected.
If none of this works just deinstall it
^Morgaur's advice is the one that should fix it for you since you are running on Vista. Pretty common game/vista issue.
