Im just curious, is there anyway of knowing how many currently play GW? Im just curious to find out. I just joined, im just curious to see the numbers.
Last I checked, and that was a long time ago, at least 4 million boxes sold. That doesn't translate into active players though. There is no /who or other census tool available. Each public instance (towns and outposts) are population-controlled so a new copy is created when the population reaches a certain limit.
Suffice it to say no matter which campaign I happen to play on any day, there are plenty of people playing, and the ability to switch between US and International districts on-the-fly dramatically increases your opportunities to meet and group with others.
ArenaNet and NCSoft are not willing to post official player statistics as the game is too fluid to post reliable figures... However, the game has just reached and beaten the 4 million units sold mark and there are new players joining the game on a daily basis
In August they reached the 4 million sold mark, so they are probably well over that number in total sales. As mentioned before, hardly is there a time when I see no one online. It should also be noted that these figures were released before GWEN was released...meaning that GWEN would probably have driven a few people to pick up one of the campaigns in order to play it.
i play GW for 2 years and it seems that many players are leaving dayly but just the same many are joining but im starting to think that the numbers of leavers is growing , cuz when i strated i remember ascalon,LA,droks full all day long, now its hardly to find eaven dis 3 in droks ,it was one of the mai shoping centers and now its like i died.the game is slowly dieing and after GW2 comes out i think maybe 2/3 of the players will leave the game
I don't have Prophecies and never played it so I can't comment on that, but Factions always has a lot of people hanging out at Keining Center and that can be a little misleading. I say that because the actual zones you go to find a party to complete missions with are often dead. You shouldn't find it too hard to team up on the first island especially in the township with the Cap Son mission, but good luck on the main land.
Nightfall is flooded with people all over the place. The population is very good, however I do have an alt unable to finish the story line because he's stuck at Jennur's Horde which is a barren waistland. In the last couple of months there, I've only been able to party once.

You do realise that the fact that these places used to be flooded is because they were the ONLY places to be flooded? Now there's towns in Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall and Eye of the North territories for people to spread themselves out in. As a result it is logical that the orginal towns won't have as high a population as they used to.

Actually Gaile Gray (the community manager for Guild Wars) recently stated that player numbers/hours spent online were more than they have ever been. I'll try find the link for you.
The old player base is leaving, my friends list (which was full of active players a year ago) is now dead, i haven't seen one of them online in months. While many new players are joining i can for sure say that after Nightfalls release a lot of the players quit.
The point, however, being that there are more people joining than leaving. Many people on my friends list are actually starting to come online again after leaving after Factions.
although i love this game sadly it is dying its natural death
with no more new content to be added and gw2 to be released in 2009-2010 coupled with a quite a big mmo releases in 2008 the game will be on the decline
by far nightfall has lot of people around although it is very difficult to form a team (eye of the north is more worse )
the best way is to join a guild , if its a good guild members help each other out in pve related missions ,quests
Older players may have left, or play very infrequently, but new players are coming in and the overall effect has been a continual increase of players.
Leaving the game just because GW2 is on the horizon in two years is foolish unless you've been playing fairly hardcore all along and burn through every bit of new content as soon as it comes out. While no new retail content is planned, Anet has said as long as there are GW1 players, the servers and support remain in place. They've hinted at small free content updates in the meantime as well. GW1 isn't going anywhere until no one is left playing.
And sure, plenty of other MMO's are coming out. Plenty of other have come out in the couple years GW has been around. The advantage of GW's no monthly fee is you never have to bother with the whole unsub/resub process. Wanna take a break? Just take it, you're not paying anyway, and come back when you're in the mood even if it's only for a weekend.
I've just played a new character through Prophecies with a friend who just started the game and we never had a problem getting groups. I finished Factions a few weeks ago and finished Nightfall a few days ago and again, zero problem ever getting a group. Everywhere I went there were people in the outposts.
There are still lots of people around in Guild Wars, yes there maybe is a alot of people leaving, but alot are joining too, and the ones who are back, is more ''tight'' together.
So no worries about the Guild Wars population, there is still lots around at all times.
Here is one Big reason why so many players have stopped playing(including myself). Many players have become kinda annoyed witht eh level cap of the game so stopped playing since not much to do ne more( except pvp).
But i think many of those players will come bak once GW2 is released for the company stated that the lvl cap will be raised to maybe 100.

OK let me get this straight...people have stopped playing simply because a little number can not raise above 20? What is the difference between having a level cap of 20, with elite monsters being around level 28, and a level cap of 50 with elite monsters at 60? There is none, except for a little number. I honestly do not get why many people *want* to grind yet moan about it all over the forums.
Wat i meant was that sometimes its funner to be able to reach like lvl 80 ladida. Lotta ppl find it fun to be able to increase stat points and to show off. Like in many other games where the lvl cap is like 99 or 100.
Yes but either way you're going to be grinding just to reach a higher level. It's widely known that the entire idea behind Guild Wars is to keep it balanced and grindless.
I know but like once uve finished the game, all u want to do is lvl or pvp. Im not saying Gw is bad, in fact its the game ive played the most and spent the most money on( all sets). i still like it, but wished they added more stuff to it.
I know, everyone has their opinions...I'm just wondering what's different playing the rest of the campaign/all of the other campaigns at max level and playing it at a lower level.

You must be talking about all those other games that are levels based whereas by contrast Guild Wars is skills based. If you can't deal with the fact GW is different and not about "leveling" then you're playing the wrong game.
Guild Wars would have been better off never having levels to begin with... it would have led to much less confusion.

Even if I'm playing at 3:00 AM, there are still plenty of other people on.

nope, its just that people are leaving.

I think that Guildwars numbers are rising but not by much, players leave and there are new players everyday.
Anyway i think this is getting Off-topic. Noir asked whether there was a counter, question was answered.
