I have a question for all you MMOPRG.com people. What makes GW so great? To me I have no clue what makes it great ( even though I like it) i like the short grind so that i dont need to get to level 10000000 or sumthin..... well the guilds help too.... well thanks for answering my question and i hope for answers!

I can't speak for others, but I got it due to the fact all you buy is the box.  No subscription and no item mall.  The PVE is pretty good, and the PVP is alright.  It plays more like a single player game till you reach max level, with occaisional bump ins with others when you go to town.  I don't have much luck getting groups.

you get in, you do your stuff, and you get out.  You can play it for 20 minutes on your lunch break or you can play it for 2 hours after work and no matter how little time you imput into it you never really lag behind anybody.  It's not heavy on the need for items and if you want to kill some people cue up and the throw you into a group and a'hackin you will go.

Even though I don't play it anymore that's what I think makes it so good.  You can get into it, quick and out of it quick and still feel like you did something worth while.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

By the same token though the game does offer rewards for more dedicated players. I'm not an expert by any means, but I've finished quite a few of the elite missions in GW and had loads more fun than being the 3rd stringer in a Molten Core raid.  GW's hardest dungeons require close coordination and you to really be on the ball with your class. People who haven't played GW all the way to the end and experienced the final content scoff at the game being for 12-year-olds, but they have no idea what they're talking about.

Well ive played Guildwars on and off for over 2 years now, more off being honest :P

Mainly because when it first came out there was 1 game, where everyone started from which meant loads of ppl to play with, get to know, join guilds etc.

People would do the quests with you to get to the more important missions to gain more of the map and loads of xp.

However, Since the other two full games Factions and Nightfall (Eye of north only expansion) now there are 3 starting points, which aint so bad till you get to the missions half way through the storyline, when you cannot find anyone to play with.

The game 2 yrs on is more 1 player for PVE, just because even in the guild im in (VKO euro luxon guild) which is full of mature helpful players, ppl still dont get helped because everyones doing something, or they dont have the same games etc.

By having 3 separate games that dont like really, they split the town populations by 3. Wow has separate starting areas, but brings everyone together for the main areas at higher levels.

Not saying that 3 different storylines isnt cool, but its gotten to the point that you really need henchies or heros (player owned AI) to do all the quests, and some of the missions

I prefer when it was only prophecies, i still have a list of 30 friends i got to know outside of the guild i used to be in, now only one of them still plays, and ive added 2, not because im not social, or because i dont look for players all the time for missions and quests, but because other players just take henchies and heros and speak in guildchat.

Nothing wrong with guildchat or guilds, but most ppl only join guilds by spamming in towns, not by getting to know ppl on quests or missions.

If you wanna solo pve and do lots of pvp then guildwars for you, but if you wanna craft, do quests with people, then guildwars aint for you.

It's a fun game, that's all. Fun classes, fun PVP, fun PVE... and you only buy the box.

Waiting for Fallen Earth, World of Darkness, Old Republic, FFXIV

I love the fact that I can quickly jump into a PvP match in Guild Wars when I have half and hour to spend. Personally, I think the best thing about Guild Wars is Alliance Battles. They're short (not too short), have a point to them and are fun at the same time. There is also an abundance of people waiting to play with you almost at all times too, which means that waiting times are generally very short.

I am totally on board with what the other posters have said.

The game for me stood fresh for a long time because it gave you the option to solo nearly every portion of the game with the help of henchies. They came in very handy when you couldn't find that healer or nuker to get on your way.

Then came heroes in NF that were customizable skill wise. This addition kinda turned the game into even a more single player game where you really didn't need anyone else. I like this addition on a 60/40 scale. Gave me time to do things when I couldn't find a group, but made it so that people would rather use them than finding a group which was the down side.

Overall nice story through all 3+GW:EN. Made sense. From what I can tell, many view GW as 3 different games. I however view them all as one. So I play in them as one not being separated.

I like actual story progression through instancing. The cut-scenes really stand out to me and will probably always be remembered. Problem Guild Wars had imo though is that the stories were too short and many things could be skipped to reach the missions that told the main story. NF tried to fix this by reqs to get into missions or for them even to be visible.

I kinda like the way mobs are set up also. Where each battle you are fighting multiples. Where the healer is constantly moving around for position. It's not all tank and spank. Even when it is it doesn't feel like it.

Skill customization is also a plus for me. Gives you the opportunity to play your character in a variety of ways. Great support of hybrid play. I could be an elementalist who only uses assassin skills or a Necro who only uses warrior skills. No pigeon holing in this game. Grouping in pve may try and force you into certain roles, but really...the possibilities are endless.

    No sub fees.

Grinding is hardly noticeable to me. The only grind that stands out to me is title grinding. This really has no bearing on anything. Only time I have noticed that it does is puging pvp for heroes ascent where groups want you to be of a particular level. Heroes Ascent pvp guilds also usually have some sort of req for this.

Overall just a nice piece of work. The good points outweigh the bad points for me (bad points of which I will not list here... plenty of those also as with any game). Even though I do not play anymore, I will always remember it as one of the better games that I have played.

After playing for one year i found myself asking the same question,i then uninstalled and never looked back, its really not that great just a polished game that actually delivers, but i found pve boring after i could solo L24,s and pvp makes my head spin, and not in a good way.

It's a game that let's you control your progress and doesn't force you to gring 24 / 7 to feel like you're making progress.  For me it was the no monthly fee and the more casual gaming approach that got me to play it. I don't have a lot of time to play with a full time job and family and can't commit a 2.5 hour period for a raid in WoW any longer.

Eve-Online, EQ2, DnL, SWG (Dead), Guild Wars, Anarchy Online, EQ, DAoC, Planet Side, WoW, LOTR, Tabula Rasa.

The reason I've been playing GW for well over 2 years is because it is relaxing. There really isn't a death penalty; going to a city is a big ol' band-aid... it's pretty to look at, I've done my share of dying because I was sightseeing.

I enjoy the fact that I don't have to be in a group to get things done. Although sometimes it is fun to run through a cooperative mish with 'live' people. The introduction of heroes was awesome because I can play 4 characters at once! lol It has been great to load the heroes with skills that complement each other and my own.

Lately, I've been playing my Ranger/Necro with Jora as a Warrior/Paragon and Koss as a Warror/Paragon and Livia as a straight Necro.

To just look at the game it appears to be cookie cutter because of the limited armor sets and everyone has the same powers; but it truly isn't like that at all with all of the options and combinations one can play around with.

It's also the only game that I enjoy PvP in; I've tried it in othere MMOs and hate it. Something about GW PvP is fun stuff. Maybe because of the options to GvG or to do the cooperative mishes in the Factions expansion makes it feel different than the big smack down other games have felt like.

Ok, sorry this got so long. :P

I am the mother of 4; therefore I am insane.

No subscription, PvE/PvP is awesome and the GUILD SYSTEM ROCKS!

  • hachanhachan Member Posts: 21

To be honest all I can think of is:

No monthly fees, playing through each story in each part that was added to the series, titles are ok, and alliance battles/pvp is fun.

the only problem is that to me the community has gotten bad. I mean it feels as if anyone new who joins or some who are around still just come to use the game like a chat room. Plus, seeing armorless characters around still is really sad in a game with wonderful enviroments and exciting missions and quests. It is getting harder to form a group for the missions with people mostly picking heros and hench now. Some titles just seem impossible to get. After Proph, factions, nightfall, and now Eye of the north we still are stuck at lvl 20 with no chance of using different armor that everyone else. This is just a few.

This game USE to be great but after a year or so what made this game fun is just not enough to stay around much as before.

    1. Because it is one of the best competivie games out there and people love to compete and have fun.

    2. No monthly fee.

If this game had a much better pve portion and a persistent world from the start, this game would get more rock even more but no worries Guild Wars 2 is on the way !

play it and u will find out, its not like other mmos, its got a different feel to it

  • lightbladelightblade Member Posts: 219

    In order of importance:

    1. No subscription fee. Along with that comes less hassle.  (Credit Card stuff)

    2. Level and gear make little importance.  Along with that comes you can to flame others for being pure bad at the game instead that his/her level or gear is bad.

    3. Intense PvP.  Each player in team is important.  Even getting one dropped out can cripple the team greatly.  Heck, even if someone got killed and didn't get resurrected within 10 seconds can mean a party wipe.

Oh, and I can go on and on about PvP.  But I'll just leave it there.

  • LiddokunLiddokun Member UncommonPosts: 1,665

    1. No monthly Fee

    2. Large amount of content and storyline.

    3. No pressure to keep up with the joneses (no raiding, guild drama, powerplays)

    4. Relaxing to play.

    5. Can play for short periods of time instead of the high amount of time requirement of other mmorpgs.

    6. I find that with my 60 hour work week I rarely can find time now to attend raid and grind WoW reps, but GW give me a chance to still enjoy gaming. I can play for 15 min to 3 hour stretches.

The thing i like is you can only have 8 skills at once so u really have to find out what works well together and develope strategies with different builds.

    - The setting, the atmosphere and feeling of it all: I've been humming those ingame tunes more than once (though how do I miss the original login music!)

    - The freedom of choice on how, how much and when I want to play: I can't stop experimenting with new builds, I don't have to worry about the need to spend countless hours to remain competitive in PvP etc.

    - The regular updates that keep the game fresh and PvP leveled

    - And so on...

what i think makes gw so great there is no monthly fee so if i got to much to do 1 week i dont lose money and i dont got to have no life to have fun and get far in the game.

If you ever want to listen to that, before you select you char go into the Anet store and click on GW Prophecies, you'll here the original awesome log-in tune

I enjoyed GW loads for the 2 years I played it, the no monthly idea was genious and how they limited bugs and lagg was awesome. I've happily quit now but I suppose the only thing I didn't like about GW was that in HA there wasn't much skilled involved especially the fact that I never used to see any mesmers there.

I'm never going to forget the fun I had in FoW though

We're all Geniuses. Most of us just don't know it.

When I played a lot I was in a great guild which makes things fun as far as pvp goes.  Now I have talked to a few people who didnt get  a chance to play with a good guild and they didnt really like the game.  The solo play was great, no fees, and if you have a good guild then you will have fun in GW.
