Status of UO

DecimvsDecimvs Member Posts: 5

Hello, I am a former UO player... and just wanted to know how its doing. Do alot of people still play? Are there too much unwanted content? Just give me an idea. I played from Blackthorn's Revenge to the end of Age of shadows.

I loved UO, Garriot should have stayed on....  But UO in current state?  I hear KR is junk, play the trial and get your opinion there

I have just restarted after having played on and off for the past few years and think I will make a long run of it this time. Alot of the problems you may hear about are in UO but not to the degree people would have you believe. KR is playable and a great advance over the previous 3d client. Still not as smooth as the 2d client for somethings. The sand box in UO is still big and their is now more newbie content to allow new players an easier transition. Is this your fathers UO? No, it isn't but the players are still their and people still drop alot of stuff out side the banks and you still smoke when you fail to cast a spell. I would suggest you follow the advice of the 2 previous posters, try UO stratics and the 14 day free trial.

Been thinking of a return to UO myself.   I have heard the KR client is making alot of progress and many players like it better except for a few small things that the 2D client still does better.

I'd like to try it out and see if the new KR UI fits with what I've become accustomed to from playing SWG and VG.  I've played a little using the 2D client on a freeshard in the last couple of weeks and I admit that I'm having a hard time relearning UO and the interface.   But I've been remembering the old T-Hunt days and stuff and miss them badly...

My delay in returning to UO is mostly based on the possibility that I may throw away all the time and effort I've put into Vanguard (which is fun and alot less buggy than last spring, so don't let the naysayers prevent you from trying it at least!).

    Decisions...decisions...

    Playing WoT now.

I started 2 days after it was released... Way back in the day. Played for years...

Then it went carebear and they are trying to make it an item driven game, 100% no reg cost armor and you can't lose it when you die? Weak.

I tried to come back and it is just not good...

Could you name some MMO's where you lose armor/ect when you die?

    *edit

Could you also name some MMO's that use some sort of "reg" to cast spells?

    Not being sarcastic.

I can't,  Thats what made UO so freaking Great!  It wasn't like this other crap that most companies are throwing out the past few years.  Just like many posts in the general forum says  "same game, different skins"    Its boring.

I guess the companies are catering to the up and coming Generation.  You know, the ones that say that the sesame street we grew up with as kids is to much for the "newer Generation"  lol

IMO UO is doing fine.  Could be doing better but it's still chugging along.  I'm still having fun with it after all this time.  I guess it's what you make of it.  If you play the trial I believe you only have access of the content up to AOS.  If you try WalMart I believe they're still selling the 9th Aniv. pack for pretty cheap.  There's is quiet a bit of content, but it's really not that hard to pick up on.  If your looking for a lot of people to play with I'd stick with GL or ATL.  And for factions I'd try out GL.

In addition -  I forgot there is also a 14 day trial of the KR client.

No, that is why it is good. There is no cost to being a mage in any EQ or WoW or anything. UO was ever popular and it added one more aspect, monitoring your supplies. Not just sit on the ground and drink some juice and get your mana back.

Atleast with the full loot there is some aspect of death being bad. "Most" MMORPG's are based in a fantasy medieval world. You think if someone saw a dead body they might see what that person has and maybe take some of it? Make it atleast a little bit real.

The games are cartering to the current generation of pansy's that the US is breeding. Can't spank your child, don't grade papers with Red Pen and no dodge ball at school. You might hurt someones feelings. I used to pay Sewer Shark on Sega CD, the game calls you names, when you die you die and START OVER. This won't work anymore, little pansy kids can't lose their super axe of ganking. Oh no.

It's true...and because of this teh economy is shot.  No-one wants to use GM goods anymore...they can't lose their arties so the might as well use them.

And the reg thing...well...as in D&D a mage in UO started out pretty weak but eventually they could far outdamage a warrior who needas to pay for repairs and new equipment etc.  Mages used to have to buy or collect regs...not so anymore.

It's true...UO is not what it was...I started again a few months ago but couldn't bring myself to carry on.  I mean come on...an item shop in UO?  It's pay to play for gods sake.

Oh, and don't get me started on the scropters.

On the other hand...if you have never plaid the game before and don't mind massive neon weapons on your luminous beetles and horses then give the game a go...it still has a lot of depth...especially if you're not tarnished by what it used to be.

Um are you new to UO or something....don't you know what use to make UO so great?  The hardcore vibe, sandbox, PvP, ect.  What are you talking about name some games where you can lose armor?  UO was suppose to be that game and it was for a long time before a bunch of random people took over and tried to salvage subscriptions due to the changing of MMOs.

What do you mean "am I new to UO"??

Of course I'm not new to UO. I've played since release.

"Don't you know what use to make UO so great?"

Kind of a stupid question isn't it?? Everyone knows why UO was the best MMO back in its day!

"What are you talking about name some games where you can lose armor?"

Do you have a problem with me asking a legitimate question? I happen to be curious if any another MMO's use a similar old-school UO ruleset. If you don't have an answer to my question then don't comment on it.

No one tried to "salvage" subscriptions. Or atleast thats not what "ruined" the game. EA released expansions to make a quick buck.

You know what they say about people that ASSuME.

From now on, keep your "ignorant" comments to yourself.

The old Vets are always protective of what UO was, and we dont want people to get the image that the UO we played back then is how it is now.

My fault. Maybe I did go a bit over the edge.

I wrote "Not being sarcastic". Thought that would get my point across. Next time I'll be more careful with my wording.

Thanks for clarifying my statements to this troll.  Yes, he is right by stating I read your post to mean "no other game loses armor and uses regs so why should uo."  I played since beta so don't "ASSuME" that I do not grasp what UO was.  I played approximatly 4 years after release and I fully understand what happened to UO in terms of MMO evolution.

You should be more reluctant to post here if you get that defensive and angered over comments, as when you post you will be replied to by people who disagree with you.  I understand now that you meant the post to mean something else and I misinterpreted your post, however that could easily be cleared up by a simple "you misread my post or didn't understand it" oppose to some childish rant.

    Now go to bed.

Nah, I like my "childish rant" better. Either way, you started this whole thing by assuming I wasn't familar with the old pvp days of UO. People that assume are idiots. Period.

I think people that throw the term "troll" around are also idiots.

Troll - Someone how intentionally posts controversial messages in an on-line community.

I'm no troll. But have been guilty of feeding trolls like you. Kinda like I am now.

    Man, I hate idiots.

Guess that's how it works in these forums. I've heard of selective listening, but never selective reading.

None of this is necessary. Not the post you just made, nor the post I just made. Hell, about half of these posts are simply internet argueing.

    I'm done.

    And I'm the troll?

    I can live with that.

I did not call you anything, let alone a "troll". I would not call somone with an intelligent and well written opinion a "toll". Like I said, I agree with you Irish, I usually do. Just keep it civil is all I'm saying. I apologize if I offended you, as that is Never my intention, just constructive debate. And I feel insults and mud-slinging are not neccasary. See look, I'm about to agree with you again: Yes, Smartwhois's post above was completely unnecessary, and I feel I have lost a few IQ points from even glancing at it. I still play and immensely enjoy UO, so I must be living dead too. Irish, don't let the naysayers get ya down man, they just get on here to spread hate and discontent, by letting it get to you, they have won.

And you are absolutely right Irish, stellos is just as bad, but I do not make it a point to tell everyone about themselves. The only reason I said what I did , is because of the way you chose to handle the situation. Once, again, I am sorry if you feel that was a personal attack on you, on my part, but it wasn't. I would've replied the same if it was somone else. Well, I hope you have no hard feelings towards me, as I have stated before, I really tend to agree with you on many points.

P.S. Oh, and Stellos? Stop calling people trolls just because they disagree with you. And Smartwhois? Try to offer more than one-liners when you post.

UO is a zombie of a game.  The original concept is long, long, long gone and the last bit of good to be found in it is falling off in rotten chunks of EA neglect.  The game that started as an amazing virtual reality and lively community has withered away through multiple EA expansions and changes aimed at making the game generically enjoyable to the lowest common denominator of pimpled teenagers and their 3 month attention spans.
