What ever happened to Sturmrabe?

NeanderthalNeanderthal Member RarePosts: 1,861

He used to post here and on the official site all the time but I haven't seen anything from him for ages.  Perhaps he's happily playing beta.  Maybe he lost interest in AoC.  Maybe he gave up on mmorpgs entirely.  Maybe he was abducted by aliens.

Just sort of wondering.  I challenged him to sort of a bet although he might not remember and I don't think he ever officially agreed to it.

if hes not playing Conan in the beta phase, we can only muster a conclusion that hes with the donut ship right now since theres no person who could just "give up" on mmorpg's or even less on Age of Conan

I believe he was banned from the forums. Sure, he seemed reasonably intelligent and so forth, but he was a loose-cannon, hot-tempered and so forth.

Sturmrabe was banned on the official forums after he made this thread:

He still posts in his guild's forum, but I'm not sure if he's banned on these forums or not.

Heh, that was a fun read.  Hey, at least he was still fighting the good fight when he went down.

Hey Avery, tell him I was thinking of him will you?  And tell him not to let his head explode or anything drastic like that.

I believe sturmrabe gets banned from various forums fairly regularly.  Although if it was that post that got him banned that is rather sad as he is correct.

REH certainly had his influences in people like Jack London, Burroughs, various pulp stories and perhaps Dunsany.  But he certainly did not take "whatever was around"  he had a very serious passion for history and the celts and proto celts.  He is well known as  the founders of the sword and sorcery genre and clearly declined to use the "traditional" folklore which he was certainly aware of and as a contemporary of Tolkein (at the time of the Hobbit) was currently in use.

I agree with his post it shows a clear lack of understanding.  If they said the same thing about Roger Zelazny in reference to the Amber series I would say the same thing, even though since that series deals with a potentially infinite number of worlds such things can exist it clearly misses the point of the whole thing.

All authors borrow and are influenced by the current environment, but there is certainly no doubt that REH came up with his own quite unique series and imprinted an indeliable and unique flavor on it.   Conan is harsh and fantastic, but at its heart its about humans.  Its pulp, its low fantasy, its film noir.  Its both brutal and low but cunning and canny.  There have been very few protagonists like Conan and that is the heart of the series.  And shapes the parameters of the whole world.  How could you have elves and huge worms that some country was constantly fighting in a world like Conan's where magic is rare and generally evil and mistrusted.  Sure magic as a plot device in the 20's and 30's was more of a mysterious thing rather than a common powerful force such as it is in modern fantasy.  But that is one of important characteristics of Conan as a character and a Barbarian.

Its such a hallmark that even Thundarr the Barbarian shares it in that awesome 80's cartoon.

I hope that Dev statement does not come from the fact that REH and Lovecraft re-used each others cosmology.  REH and Lovecraft were good friends with a rich a correspondance and they purposely used each other cosmology to have continuity over different historical periods.  Further Derleth, after HPL's death, continued to co-opt all sorts of things even vaguely related to any HPL stuff and this had nothing to do with REH.

But that statement kind of basically confirms what I figured their attitude was from the beginning.

It wasn't. He gets hit with the ban stick fairly regularly. I'm amazed that he's never been permabanned in all honestly, but then Funcom is probably worried that doing so would be bad publicity and at the very least, might mean fewer sales.

But villainous scum need love too.

Oh well, if you don't remember my little bet it would be best if I don't bring up what it was.  My new year's resolution was to be less argumentative on online forums.  That should last for a about a week or two.

I was just curious what had happened to you.  But I guess you're alive and kicking so all is well.

Hmm, I feel the need for a theatrical exit...

(The following story isn't meant to mean anything about any game in particular.  I just felt like typing and this is what came out.  Sometimes I do randomly strange things.)

    ---------------------------------------------------

Lost in old reverie the rather brutish looking fellow had drawn his sword with an exultant battle cry.  But there were no enemies nearby.  And nothing to fight for.

He recalled then that he had died long ago.  Long ago.  And being the sinner he was he had been condemed to this gaily painted hell.

His eyes were drawn to the lime-green glow of the plastic sword in his hand and he sighed.  Sheathing the sword in it's neon pink scabbard his shoulders slumped and he looked about in resignation.  His hell was a carnival of merriment and bright colors.  Sprightly elves ran about in their underwear.  Jolly ogres tickled giggling gnomes.  Orcs and dwarves drank fizzing, purple koolaid with crazy straws while profusely complimenting each other on their table manners.

From time to time a great, dragon shaped pinata would drift over the teeming masses whereupon half of them would draw plastic swords and foam rubber axes and charge to attack it.  Some would stand back tossing easter eggs filled with glitter while others ran about with toy stethescopes treating mock wounds.

After a time the pinata would break, releasing a cargo of even more brightly colored plastic swords and axes and doodads and whatsits.  The crowd would then scream in unison, a shrill scream of pure ecstasy, and rush in willy nilly to snatch up the goodies.

He would have killed himself if it would have done any good.  But of course it wouldn't.  He would just fall down for a while and then get back up again.  There was no escape.

Feeling thoroughly defeated he began to wander aimlessly away.  Farting rainbows, he walked into the candystriped forest while a maddenly catchy tune began to play from nowhere.  If there had been any to see, or any to care, they might have seen a lemon flavored teardrop running down the cheek of the old warrior.  And being that this was his hell...they probably would have licked it off while he poked impotently at them with his lime-green plastic sword.
