PvP with depth.

ThesiosThesios Member Posts: 8

Hi, I've been playing World of Warcraft since release till now, and I'm ready for a new game. So far I've been playing the game for PvP, which has been pretty fun, but I've seen through what I once thought was amazing and relatively in depth, to be very imbalanced. If some of you people that think you played WoW to get the real taste, I'm talking about Arenas, not Battlegrounds.

I'm looking for a "mmorpg" that has pvp with depth. What I mean is, I don't want a game that just has pvp, I want a game that has a style of pvp that is well though out. I want a game that rolling one class can give you many strategies and ways of beating other classes, but in an original way. In Example, rolling a healer class shouldn't limit you to just healing, you should be supplied with skills that can exploit another class's weak points, and vise versa for your opponents. I want it to be relatively fast paced but I also want to have to use strategy or skill to determine the outcome, not gear or what class I'm fighting. The idea of having a character use a damage skill on someone and spam healing pots while your opponent does the same thing is not what I'm looking for.

I also want this balanced class versus class system to translate well to group based pvp. I want to be able to play with friends of mine against other groups of people, and still have skill and strategy to determine who wins. This is partly the reason I'm not satisfied with World of Warcraft. The way that the classes in WoW are laid out, you can't have a group of any random classes, you have to use a certain combination to be the most effective, which is extremely unfair to all of those people who rolled those classes that don't work.

From my experience (Which is rather limited) there is no game with this style of pvp that I can find. Also, I'm not looking for a first person shooter, I'm looking for a game that has a fantasy base, and has the style of the generic mmorpg (different skills, large servers). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So you want a game actually built for pvp and not pve .... *rubs chin* well i know there's Lineage 2 and Guild Wars which are both available and considered really popular.  There's also Shadowbane its purely pvp based but has alot of world / city building & guild fighting etc etc.   Then there's Dark Ages of Camelot, its fairly old but its Realm Vs Realm pvp is considered the best pvp model still to this day.

Games coming out that have big buzz on their pvp design (with pve included but not a bigger focus than pvp) are Warhammer online & Age of Conan.   You should check out their websites.

If your a fan of WoW's pvp (prays for forgiveness) you'll probably enjoy Warhammer's RVR pvp far better with its open world pvp areas,  open area pve areas (but you can flag yourself for pvp),  & scenario pvp instances.   The best part of WAR's pvp has to be the City Sieges though.  You PVP from day one, you level from pve or pvp or both.  Eventually your 'realm's hard work will pay off and you'll get to storm the actual city of the enemy realm and take it over kill their king and anyone you want thats left within.   (I'm not real up todate on AoC's pvp is currently working I hear its being revamped alot so you'll have to check for yourself).

Please Refer to Doom Cat with all conspiracies & evil corporation complaints. He'll give you the simple explination of..WE"RE ALL DOOMED!

Thanks for your help Elvenangel! It's nice to know a list of the games that would possibly be what I'm looking for.

Does anyone have anymore of these games? Or maybe something that's exactly what I'm describing?

Dark Age of Camelot is one of the best model for PVP action, basically grouped PVP.  It is one of the few Realm vs Realm model in which players in one realm are forever enemies of another realm, and there are 3 realsm (not 2).  That makes some interesting combinations, and also makes members of a realm generally friendly to each other.  PVE exist, but generally as a drive to push PVP.

This same company (Mythic) is now working on Warhammer Online.  The same Realm vs Realm exists, basically 3 sides vs the other 3 sides.  You can see it as 2 realms or 3 friendly realms vs 3 others.  They have some built in features in which everyone, even when soloing a quest, may in some way contribute to the realm conflict.  So in a way, RvR is built in, and the whole game is suppposing spinning around this eternal conflict.  How the actual playing population works it out, we have to wait and see.  Should be fun, giving the good records of Mythic.

Most of the Asia (Korean) PVP games are brutely free for all PVP.  Unfortunately, levels and items rule, and low levels are generally weaker.  Those games are just normal MMOs in a FFA PVP server, and are usually PVE grinds to level up so you can kill the lowbie next time.  Try them out if you want to gain a feel about them.

EVE is supposingly all PVP, though you need to do some PVE money earning to finance your PVP, and the penaly for losing PVP is big.  You lose your entire weapon/armor set (your ship) and lose some attributes.  Oh well, its a totally different story altogether.

    Good luck in your search.

Just wanted to  add EvE is extremely hard to jump into it's so tuff to start all by yourself ,i played for a trial(and my friend plays all day every day so i find out alot what goes on)  it is extremely difficult to get into a good  corporation . EvE has very little if any mercy when your are young.

No such thing as pvp with depth. Its get geared up and kill your opponent in a strategic way, rinse and repeat as often as possible until you get bored.Fun for maybe about 6 months if that and then people look for other things to do.
