I don't think it's all the "first kiss" theory as many have stated. I think the early MMORPG's were "sandbox" designs with challenge, so you felt fear and joy.
The later MMORPG's are "linear quest" designs with very little challenge, so there is no fear and no real sense of accomplishment.
"Sandbox" MMORPG's feel like worlds. "Linear questing" MMORPG's feel like amusement parks.

My first was UO and its by far not my favorite game. EQ1 holds my favorite MMO title of the old days. EQ2 holds the current even if i'm not playing it right now (retired for a bit)

Before that I was playing this fps 6 to 8 hours a day, wreaking havoc online. I got pretty good, but after awhile my hands started to hurt and I also started to think maybe the character I played could do more than kill. I started playing some rp mods of the fps, which was okay, but then I heard about swg. I loved that game from the first day, even though there were bugs.
MMO games played or tested: EQ, DAoC, Archlord, Auto Assault, CoH, CoV, EQ2, EVE, Guild Wars, Hellgate: London, Linneage II, LOTRO, MxO, Planetside, SWG, Sword of the New World, Tabula Rasa, Vanguard, WWIIOL, WOW, Age of Conan
The first I played was Entropia Universe a couple of years back. It definitely wasn't my best experience, though it was interesting for me as a new-comer to the genre.
Asheron's Call was my first and still my favorite MMORPG.

Asheron's Call (AC) was my first mmo. It was truly a great experience.
Star Wars Galaxies: An Empre Divided (SWG Pre-CU) was my absolute favorte of all time. I doubt I will find another mmo nearly as immersive (or addicitng).
UO was my first MMO, I played from release and quit when EA forked the game up into no return. My second MMO is Shadowbane and I have been playing since release to date. I have played others but none even come close to what classic UO was, maybe Darkfall online?... who knows? To this day I have been in the same pvp guild with the same friends from way back when and thats alot. Its great fun to sit in vent and bs about our times together. I think that alot of people had great times on their first MMO, it was a kind of magic.
My first mmo was also Ultima Online...I was blown away, because it was not only my first, but just about everyone else's too. So there were TONS of people. No one bitched about having to group, or having to be social, blah blah blah...i was what it was and people there were nuts about it. This, however, is not my favorite mmorpg, even though I have fond memories of it.
I took a big break from MMos for a few years, and didn't get back into em until the launch of Final Fantasy Online on the PS2, at which point both my wife and me got into it. Classes had specific functions, facilitating dynamic group play. You could solo for maybe 10 levels while you got to know your class, then you had to function as a member of a team. The enviroments are very pretty. We could play it on the big screen. As a result of teh group-centric game play, we met a lot of great people and a lot of ass hats, you only party with those people once and word gets around). 15 minute long boat-rides where you can fish and get attacked by pirates. It was such a great time for us.
All that said, I never maxed out a single character in that game. After awhile I got tired of always waiting fore a party in Jeuno...only to finally get one and have the white mage (healer) say they had to go, effectively ending the party. The point is, the games' not flawless, no game is. But for me, its the one I remember as having the most overall fun.

My first MMO was Asheron's Call and it's the one I enjoyed the most. It had some pretty unique features and like my first girlfriend, it has a special place in my heart.
These are very interesting results indeed even though it's only had about 120 votes. Since you can group both the "No" and "First game I played for more than a month" as not being their first MMO, it's about a 50/50 vote. I know it's a very limited poll and all that, but still that's pretty surprising.
There two MMOs which I really loved, Asheron's Call 1 because it was a challenge back in the day, and SWG Pre-CU/Pre-NGE for similar reasons (and the fact I could play both a combat skill set and a social/entertainment skill set).

I voted yes. I would be surprised beyond belief if I found another game that I enjoyed as much.
MMORPG
My first was SWG Pre-CU. It was a buggy mess but I still rather enjoyed it.
My first was Lineage 1, and no, it was not my favorite. (played it 6 mo) My 2nd was DAOC and it remains my favorite game.
But I've had good times in several other games including WOW, Lineage 2, Shadowbane and a few others.
