SWG is the best online game ever.. but.

The game when it came out was, and still is the best game ever. BUT there were a few things that killd the game.

1. The games suport, and service.

2. That they did not use the idere og imp, vs reb and the nutrals between in a way that made poeple do FvsF. As in DAOC were u are weworded for this fhigts.

3. Unbalanced, classes. and the hole jedi´ idea.

4. Now the way they have destrud they skill tree.

*Remake the SWG world, and lad some one make it that know the mening of Online Gaming.

SWG is not the best game in the world. It has flaws. But there is no game that doesnt have flaws. In the end, if you enjoy playing SWg, play it. To hell with everyone elses opinions of the game. To hell with the past. MMORPGs are for the now.

I'd say that SWG had the potential to be the best.game.ever, but, unfortunately, the potential was not realized.  In so many ways.

It was released in a rush, and the developers were so busy with bugs and balancing issues (not to mention fixing things that were outright broken that were directly related to balancing issues) that they scarcely had time to provide the additional content they had planned on putting into the game on a periodic basis.

Then, when WoW came out, the difference in polish between the two games was glaringly obvious, which worked in WoW's favor.

Of course, kicking Koster upstairs and out of the way didn't help either, because a creative direction vacuum was created that was never filled, and it showed.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

I was always shocked how the game play was mishandled in terms of bugs and lack of support with no real content when it was launched. I was always surprised that the pre production that was put into the art was never met with the same ferocity as the game engine should of had. But looking back at it now I can say the skill system was superior and I could have easily lived with the CU. Even now I can live with the expertise system. But I am happy to see the current devs switch to chapter updates adding free content  even if it is using the same assets from the game. I wish SWG a good new year for those that play and hope it will survive . We need more sci fi mmo games in this market.

SOE is famous for pushing games out the door before they are even close to being ready.... (Vanguard comes to mind)

    1) SWG was not finished (very little game content, no vehicles, no player cities, no space combat, several professions not close to being done or balanced and tons of bugs)

    2) WOW came out not to long after the release of SWG and when SOE started to see all the subscribers they were getting they decided to make SWG more like WOW (Thus the Combat Upgrade followed by NGE)

I think the concept of SWG was awesome, but SOE didn't give it a chance...

Since other posters have pointed out the flaws and what went bad with SWG I thought I would point out what I consider to be one of SWG's finest moments. The only time I think they were headed in the right direction and yet still somehow managed to bring us to where we are today.

To this day I still think JTL was the best expansion ever released for any MMO that I have played. It did what I think an expansion should do. It not only expanded the game JTL added a whole new dimension to the game. It didnt just reskin some mobs and rename some boring old quests that you had already done 1000 times. It didnt add a new boring and buggy as hell planet like the other 2 expansions. It gave players the chance to experience a whole different type of game play that was totally different from what we had and yet still relied heavily on crafters. It was (looking back at it now) amazing that SOE and LA pulled it off as well as they did.

There were some bugs to JTL and not everyone liked the type of game play it added. I have never been a huge fan of those flight sim games. I did learn to like it though. It was a great change of pace from the ground game.  Yes there are a lot of things they could have done to make it even better but I think as it stood at the time it was a great and much needed addition to the game.

I'v played so many MMORPG's and so many have sucked it was a headache, swg was one of the only good ones, it had fun classes a killer crafting system and i loved the bounty hunter missions and bounty hunter player missions where you "tried" to kill a jedi. and jedi were as they were meant to be at first, not too many of em and they were hard to kill...really hard. Wow sucks SOOOOOOO BAD. graphics hurt my eyes and its super simple combat drove me insane. galaxies graphics were pretty good and the combat was complicated. and my favorite part was the fact you could mix and match classes that you wanted to. lol come on a TKM/CH.....kung fu masta with a rancor.....But alas it was never meant to last....they tried to copy wow DOH! i still dont see how wow has so many subscribers, its boring and when a games graphics look like cardboard there is a probly. But i have to say don't lose hope... Soe fired the original team that was responsible for CU and NGE and a new team is in place that has done nothing but good so far, a new city on dathomir that was the village where you got jedi after patch 9, they revamped it as the place to get into new instances where you got to fight a tusken king, IG-88 the assassin droid, and one other thing i cant remember. Still if your gunna play this game WAIT FOR IT TO GET BETTER.  GET TO THE CHOPPA it's time to go play xbox 360.

Jump to Lightspeed was part of the original game, they just couldn't get it done in time for the early release so they released it as an expansion instead.. So most of the design was done by the original team, this is probably why it had a good feel to it...   After JTL the two expansions were basically theme parks, they moved away form the openness of the original game and JTL...  It was a bad move IMO....

The game went from "Lets make a kick @ss game" to "Lets dumb down the game so we can hire hack programmers and Dev's for cheap money"

I think one of the biggest reasons WOW is so huge is because the graphics are simple, it allows more people to play without having to upgrade there graphics cards...  When SWG came out it was pretty CPU/GPU intensive, most people had to upgrade there system to play it...    With WOW people who had 2-3 year old gaming rigs could play it..

    So you have:

    1) A Very polished game with few bugs

    2) Low system requirements

These two things is the main reason why WOW is such a huge success....

Isn't it funny how people have raised this game to "BEST GAME EVAH@" status?.

At best, it was an average game at the time and it got rocked by the almost simultaneous releases of WoW and EQ2 (a couple weeks apart).  Even during the summer of 2004, people were begging, no DEMANDING, a combat update. Anything, people cried, to improve the combat. And we want it now, people screamed.

You want to level? Fly to Dant or flavour of the month hunting ground,  join a "SOLO GROUP" and venture out into the wilds, alone. And don't dare get too close to one of your supposed 'groupmates', cause you'll 'steal' their share of experience.

Seriously, who invented the "solo group" and thought it was a good idea?

This is such a good point.  Look at the MMO's that come from Asia. They have stunning  graphics and can be played with low system requirements. The SWG engine seriously needs a makeover. And I also felt that JTL was the best thing that SWG had released. It felt like the game was heading in the right direction where the game was heading into greatness.  The obi wan trial was something that should of been free due to their plans for the NGE. Lucas Arts and SOE really screwed up in more ways than one. It really is a shame.

But I still think having a space game and a ground game with Player cities is a huge strength for any sci fi based MMORPG. But Nancy at Lucas Arts made some silly statements that proved what a mistake the NGE was towards its current subscription base. A fiew friends of mine who work in the industry could not believe her statements along with SOE's version of the broken NGE. I have to give a lot of credit to the current team at SWG for getting the game 80% fixed...well...some what-lol. I think in 2008 Dead Meat is going to push new content. Hopefully without rehashed assets.

SWG had the potential to become a great game - and it was in some regards (the crafting system and the player driven economy for example). But like everything handled by SOE the game was turned into a mess. And I will never ever touch a SOE MMO again.

only problem with the current version of SWG(nge)...was it followed SWG(precu)...if SWG(nge) was frist the discussion would be far different..it wasnt it followed the Carson of MMO's which anyone/or anything that follows a Legend/icon well never stack up do too the Rose colored glasses effect.
