Is WoW your first MMO? (Poll)

Pappy13Pappy13 Member Posts: 2,138

The poll in the general forums made me curious to see what we might see in these forums.  If you had tried no other MMO's before WoW and have subscribed to WoW, select "yes".  If you had tried others before WoW but did not subscribe to them and have subscribed to WoW, vote "first subscribed to MMO".  If you had subscribed to others before subscribing to WoW than vote "no, I subscribed to others before WoW".  If you have not subscribed to WoW, please vote "have not subscribed".

Hmm pole doesnt have a vote button but anyway my answer is no I have subscribed to others before WoW, however WoW is the game I am currently playing.

edit: haha must of been a glitch, has button now

Out of every 100 men, 10 should not be there,
80 are nothing but targets, 9 are the real fighters.
Ah, but one, ONE of them is a warrior,
and he will bring the others home.

Not the first but the longest to hold my attention.

Earth & Beyond was my first paid MMO and i have also subscribed to EvE before and during WoW (two accounts there at one time), Anarchy online too and have trialed many others.

It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.

I'm afraid to admit WoW brought me into the fold....but i really don't play anymore, i am still sub'd kinda hard to let go at the moment, but i'm mainly playing TR and POTBS Beta. Right now i'm just Waiting on Warhammer then i'll probably unsub. may pick up AoC along the way...

My first account was in Daoc, but I switched to wow and have never looked back.

One reason was how Goa fuucked up the eu english servers meaning alot had to go to the us servers and play by themselves while americans slept.  Ive tried every mmo since, exclusing eq1 and swg.  I always try other mmos but I always return to wow.

No, Everquest was my first MMO I subscribed to.  WoW wasn't even my 2nd or 3rd MMO either.  I had actually subbed to EQ2 before I tried WoW.  If early EQ2 wasn't so .. bleh .. I probably would of never tried WoW in the 1st place.

When WoW people have commented on "difficulty" of WoW raids, I usually reply with "unless you played EQ1 you have no clue what real raiding is like".  Try a 12 group, no voice chat, no mod raid of the Manaetic Behemoth.... Rag?  C'thun?  Pfft, cakewalk.

Before becoming a WoW subscriber I played EQ, SWG, EQ2, WOW, EVE, GW  in that order (left wow and returned later) and now I'm currently subscribing to WOW and EVE.

My first MMORPG was Nexus back in 1998. Then I played Ultima Online very briefly before settling on EverQuest for a few years. 6 years and 20+ MMOGs later, with 2.5-year WoW stint in there, and here I am, currently gameless.

    Before the dark times...LOL

Ive watched enough of WoW and had enough of my friends tell me not to bother that I have not spend the upwards of $120 for my household to get the game. (All of us play the same game, therefore I have to buy 4 copies for 4 CPUs) My first was DAoC then galaxies.

  • VirinVirin Member Posts: 32

WoW wasn't my first.  Started on FFXI myself then went to WoW later.  Left WoW went to EVE for awhile, back to WoW and now have been off that for about a year.  Just waiting for something else to come along I actually like... probably Aion.

  • AguyAguy Member Posts: 561

No it is not my first, but it is my first of its kind.  I previously subscribed to runescape (yeah lot's of experience eh?) and WWII Online.  Figured I'd give fantasy a try.

This poll clearly shows the demographic of people that actually visit these forums are/were familiar with MMO gaming before WoW came out.

There simply WERE NOT this many people in MMO gaming before WoW came out so the result if all of the wow populace would take the poll would have to go to the first MMO part...

Hmm.  With all due respect, I'm not sure you have much of a clue what "real raiding" is like either.  You cite Manaetic Behemoth as an example of  EQs difficulty, which is ridiculous.  Even though I haven't done this raid for years, I still remember this encounter being a cakewalk even when it was current and I was leading the raids.  In fact, this was one of the first bosses, and it was very easy to learn to defeat, certainly much easier than Ragnaros or C'thun were before people beat them.

If we're talking about EQ1's PoP era, which wasn't even the most difficult expansion, then even the hardest bosses, such as Rallos Zek, Rathe Council, and Quarm, still do not eclipse the difficulty of WoW's current encounters.  They are at the very least on par.  Simply having more people doesn't make the encounter more challenging.   Perhaps for the raid leaders, but speaking from experience, this is more of an organizational challenge than one of ... dare I say it... skill.

While managing 72 people in PoP era was awkward, I would not say it was difficult.  The hardest part was making sure all 72 people were ready and understood their role, which was always cake.  Once your guild had learned the encounter, and the adds were under control, I seem to recall MB dying in 10 seconds, if not less.

I also dispute your inferrence that EQ1s raids are harder than WoWs.  Yes, there was a time in WoW when add-ons meant that healers didn't really have to think, but this was fixed prior to the launch of TBC.  I seem to recall healing on many encounters in EQ consisting of pressing your CH key every 12 seconds (depending on the CH chain ofc).

It's worth noting that a common complaint amount casual players is that only a tiny percentage will see the highest end raid content (until the next expansion anyway).  With hardcore EQ1 guilds having made the move from EQ to WoW (such as FoH, which were one of the first guilds to kill the Avatar of War), I cant see how EQ1 being more difficult.  It just isn't.

More awkward, sloppier controls, more ways to waste time, but no more difficult.

No world of warcraft isnt my first mmorpg, but ill tell you something about world of warcraft.

Besides everyone claiming this game is a gay game, and it sucks, and all that bull crap, it is a great game, other than the fact of the little kids,

    Blizzard doesnt bull shit people.

Blizzard allows you to use any interface you like, try that with any other mmorpg and get banned.

Although wow can get boring if you play like 24/7, and the grinding the same as any other mmorpg...

However world of warcraft beats the fact that they give excelent customer service, and they dont have vista issues, and all this crap like eve online, and fury online, and final fantasy XI, and ect.

Also when they nerf something it is never really that bad, considering most Korean/Japaneese/Chineese based mmorpg's, you dont got the boring down time...

Unlike 2 moons, and other games, you can actually respec as much as you want without a big penalty.

80% + of the mmorpg's on the market suck in my opinion they always lack one of the following.

Game play, Customer Service, Patches, or Fun, PVP

Such as Planet side online sony never makes a upgrade for this game like weapons veh's, ect.

Lineage 2, Korean's constantly ruin the game by nerfing classes, and ect.

Final Fantasy XI, Is really a dead game now on some servers, and the way they have added so many expansions makes players leave the starting area's so you really have no one to talk to in the starting area's anymore...

Hell Gate London Great game, but problem with this game is that you cannot respec

RF online, having to pay real life money, for a supposely free mmorpg, and your mining rate reduced to 1 ore per so many mins, and  UMT's cost over $20 a month payments if you kept your umt there 24/7 mining.

EVE Online, great game, but they wont fix the vista

    http://mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/1782973/thread/161988#1782973

Guild wars great game, but only 8 skills at a time, can be annoying, also they always make a new expansion, and charge you for the skills, even if you just pvp they charge $49 for it unliek blizzard entertainment they dont charge for mosto f itheir patches.

STAR WARS GALAXIES Lets just say, this game doesnt even feel like the real thing anymore.

NC SOFT PRODUCTS SUCK, maybe except guild wars, such as tabula rasa, these games suck totaly, no joke.

IF NC SOFT, TRIBUNE SOFTWARE, or other game companies that host all these games really wanted to make profit for all their sucky games they would charge a subscribers fee like sony of $25 a month - $30 a month for all their mmorpg's instead of $14.99 per mmorpg per month...

Who wants to play for a service that works with a lot of mmorpgs like this, and constantly screws them up.

Oh Yeah did i mention AION is lineage 3?

THE Reason world of warcraft is a great game, is because blizzard puts all their efforts into 1 game instead of all these other mmorpg companies into multiple games, and ect. they just work with one game, and not like world of warcraft 2, world of warcraft 3, unlike everquest 1, everquest 2? whats next everquest 3 with the good graphics they should of put in everquest 2 ?

SONY is a big let down, great enviormental graphics, but character models suck big times that is on   the game Ever Quest 2.

DID I mention not all FREE mmorpg's that claim to be free are free, they really give very unfair advantages to others who donate to their service, and then in the future make it suck, and all that real life money u donated and got items with is useless.

IF You are going to play a free mmorpg, Make sure it doesnt have an item's shop you have to buy points to purcahse stuff with.

IF you are going to play a free mmorpg it should have only a subscribers fee, or package purchasing like in fury, if you have to purchase points like aeria points or ACCLAIM Coins to purchase potionsm ect. dont do it its a waste, unfair, and not really FREE as they claim, although you dont have to, they give those who dont crap...

SO want to play a free game, make sure all they sale are unlocks, and a optional subscription charge, anything else is a ripoff.

This is my opnion, and I have been through this issue with 3-4 different games already.

Earth and beyond was my first mmo, I tried wow after earth and beyond sunset didnt enjoy it so i went to swg, played that for a long time, then went to eq2 played that and lived there till i hit lvl 70, played saga of ryzom (dont know why that game didnt take off it was awesome to play) played that for like 3 months, went back to eq2, tried to play wow again but it lacked any interest for me and i left again then i played coh/cov for about 6 months, loved it till it seemed very repettive for me, then i betad lotro loved it, went back to eq2, played vanguard at launch, loved it but it was too buggy, played eve and am currently playing it, currently playing lotro, and now i went back to vanguard and holy crap it turned into an awesome game it gives me an option ingame to do something besides craft and kill as i hate crafting so when i get tired of questing i do diplomacy, and i am currently playing lotro as well, so currently i am playing lotro, eve and vanguard and i dont think ill ever give wow another go, i have a powerhouse rig and wow seems to be just A waste for such a comp asit doesnt use technology to its limits and for me its just boring. So no wow wasnt my first mmo, also am playing sword of the new world.

    playing eq2 and two worlds

I played about 40 MMO's before WoW, that's probably why I didn't subscribe to WoW', I knew there were better MMO's out there.

Your post is full of bullshit, you might like WoW, nobody can say you shouldn't like WoW. Guild Wars is currently the master of changing the game, as you can mod it in any way you want ;)  (texmod) I didn't quite like the customer's service, ah well, might have been one of the few times they didn't care about the players.

And when did nerfing (and buffing) classes become bad? A game without nerfing/buffing is a game that (serious) PvP players wouldn't play, as they see it as updates, creating new possibilities.

NCsoft has a few good games, but which got ruined by the community (L2). But even dungeon runners is a great game, and it's free. And regarding Aion: Those are the words of a man who didn't even try to read some of features in Aion ;) It might look like L2, but the gameplay is going to be (or it's supposed to become) totally different.

And this might be a disappointment for you.. but they won't keep making WoW.. ;) Blizzard even gave some hints about their next game (probably a MMO).

All the rest are.. well known facts :)

Shadowbane, then SWG. Didn't even look at WoW until the one-week open beta. It was 10x better than SWG, so I made the switch.

I remember people in my WoW guild saying, "If SB and SWG were your first two MMOs, it's surprising your still even playing MMOs." Heh

FFXI was the first MMO that I have played for more than a month (2yrs to be exact) and the longest MMO I've ever subscribed to was WoW for 3yrs.

    Well Known Facts about NC...

NERFING IN Lineage 2 Ruined it, ESP. My sorcerer after i wasted months and months getting level 55 or so, and no FREE REROLLS.

Also I had items stolen from me while I was selling in lineage 2, some how someone got away with them 100% free on everything, and GM DID nothing about it, Good customer service? SO why would I want to even think about playing any of their other games? well there is a very very very slight chance I might, but I would have to try a trial verson online first to see if it is really worthit.

Guild Wars, its OK, but it gets old after a while, here is why...

In guild wars you can only choose 8 skills First reason.

Second reason every new expansion/new skills to guild wars you have to buy a new game disc for $39.99 or even $49.99 -$75 and up for colectors, Now if you dont buy the expansion you cant use those skills in pvp, even if its a pvp character leaving you a big unfair advantage? So is it really worth paying for this crap, considering all the other good mmorpg companies give 90% of their upgrades for free, and good changes, and stuff, compared to guild wars?

If you have the money, and want to waste it, then its up to you, but After i got up till factions I realized what they were doing and quit buying it there.

Also I dont care what people wish to believe about AION, but it is really lineage 3 Different style, and name, but probabily not wroth a damn, but Since its not out yet I cant say.

DUNGEON Runners being FREE? Not really read this...

    http://www.dungeonrunners.com/membership.html

ALTHOUGH YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY, IF YOU DO NOT PAY THEM $4.95 a month, you loose a lot of things like the best items get reserved for those who pay? So now is it really free 100% ? well maybe basic member ship is, but other than that not 100%.

    QUOTE from link above...

Access to the highest quality in-game items*

    • As a member, you will be able to use all of the most powerful in-game items, weapons and armor. Without these powerful artifacts, it’ll be almost impossible to conquer the deeper dungeons of the world – the places where the richest treasures and toughest monsters can be found.
    • You’ll also look cool wearing armor and wielding mighty weapons--goodies non-Members probably won't get a chance to use.

    Log-in queue priority

    • When servers are full, there’s a line to get into the game, but as a member, you’ll skip straight to the front of the queue for easy access to Dungeon Runners whenever you want.

    Bank Storage

    • You’ll pick up a lot of loot in Dungeon Runners; some you’ll want to keep and some you’ll want to sell. There will come a point where your inventory and bank page is full, and then you have to start making that nasty decision of what to drop in order to make more room. Well, that moment will not arrive as quickly for members as it will for anybody else!

    • Dungeon Runners currently features two types of potions – one to restore health and one to restore mana (magical power). Both items are indispensable for the serious Dungeon Runner – or anyone that just likes "not dying". Non-members will find that a major potion takes up a valuable slot in their inventory, reducing the amount of space for loot. Minor potions will stack to five per inventory slot. Members, however, will be able to stack up to ten major potions per inventory slot.

Now is this really 100% FREE? Well maybe it is duh, but not 100% as far as giving everyone same fairness to the game, even those who dont pay... Not worthit in my opinion...

FREE To play, but FREE to play fair, is different when it comes to mmorpg's you have to find out if it is really worthit playing the FREE game, or if they actually give people unfair thing's in pvp, and pve wise, if they do, dont play it, because its a waste of money, and games such as ITEM shops although Dungeon runners is not like this eat up way more money than a monthly fee anyways.

I mean Its your choice about these so called (FREE) Games, but my (DAYS) of (FREE GAMES) are over, unless they are absolutely freem no tricks, no other bull shit, such as Hellgate, or FURY, because I can pay for a life time member, from these two services, which makes them 100% FREE, although it isnt 100% free to begin with...

I know its a big arguement, I dont care what anyone think's but its the truth, as long as a game is offering the following in it or on the game.

    (A) Items Store

    (B) Subscription Plan

Then this voids the meaning of (FREE) in my opinion although you may still get basic membership its a ripoff.

Now if they wanted money to keep a free mmorpg open, and its really that great, they should ask for.

    (A) Donations <------ THEN it is sitll considered (100% FREE)

Ive  paid lots of money to these so called (FREE) Games to get ahead in the game, as in item's stores, over $500 within all these (FREE) Games, but not (100% FREE), and it wasnt worthit in the long run, because they dont ever really change stuff in a lot of them, and the game is just full of a bunch of chineese farmers with uncaring admins, and ect.

Games that are free In my opinion other than old age mmorpg's are Games that failed to make market by the developers, but got created anyways, and put up free, but they use (ITEM STORES) to try and make what little profit they can out of it, and keep the server open, and stuff, instead of doing it the proper way, and subscription packages, which ruins the entire game, esp. Korean/Japaneese games.

First of all let me say that WoW is NOT my first MMORPG.  I played a short stint of UO when it was big then I moved on to the original EQ.  The original EQ was a fantastic game for it's era...That era is gone.  It was innovative for it's time.  Third person fantasy every pen and paper RPG fan's dream.  I played DAoC for a while (with EQ) and I even beta'd Eve online. I found Eve to be boring but am thinking about it again since I hear they made improvements.  I also obtained a Sony all access and was playing SWG when it first came out as well when it was not level based (it was skill based originally believe it or not, n3wbs). When EQ2 was ready to come out I was ready to give up the EQ1...I found it dragging with all the expansions coming out every couple of months it seemed.  I had a choice to make...EQ2 or WoW.  I chose WoW initially.  I played it for a while and found that I did not like the cartoony graphics so I switched to EQ2 for a while.  What a mistake I made.  EQ2 was turning into another EQ to me after a while and I got bored.  I went back to WoW and really have not ever looked back.  I have learned to love Bliz in a hate kind of way.  They are customer pleasers (to a degree).  They really have the best designers of any game company I have found but thier in game customer support is lacking in my opinion.  I will probably play this game till the day I die or Bliz quits supporting it (which will be a verrrrrrrry long time from now).

Oh, and I forgot the 1 week stint of LotR online.
