Hello... I am scouting for the best mmo for me, P2P and F2P alike. I have heard lots of good things about EverQuest... an I was wondering on what it would be like to play it. So here are my questions, rate them from 1-10 and why as detailed as possible!
Game Play?
Graphics?
Community?
Is there treasure?

The problem is Everquest had aged, so you might not like it. The free trial maybe worth a try though.(which you find about somewhere)
because its fun its a lot better then that piece of crap game called WoW anyday. But the only way for you to see if you may enjoy Eq1 is for you to try the 14day trial.
I'm a fairly new to Everquest player, so I suppose I missed out on the heyday of the game. But, I'll render my opinions as to what I've noticed.
Game Play: 8 The game has a good mix of quests and grinding (though it seems grinding out XP is the way to level). However, quests are not as easy to find as in other modern MMOs. Only a few NPCs are labeled as quest givers and there are no exclamation points or equivalent above the NPCs.
Graphics: 7 The graphics are pretty dated, but I will say that the particle effects are awfully purty.
Community: 7 Now, I will give the qualifier that the community seems to be heavily skewed toward the higher levels. And, not having reached those levels yet, I haven't had that much interaction with them. However, the playerbase seems to be fairly mature and not all that annoying as compared to other MMOs I've played.
Treasure: 8 There is a lot of treasure. However, there is also a lot of raiding for said treasure. But, I've noticed fairly regular drops of useful items.
I'd also recommend Escape To Norrath, another sort of trial version of Everquest. It's basically the beginners tutorial only, but it will give a you a chance to get comfortable with the gameplay and has no cost and no time limit. There is a level cap of 10, but when you're done, providing that your character's name isn't taken on a particular server, you can upgrade your account and transfer the character to a main gameplay server.
It's aged, and you don't lvl with quests in EQ, never, it's XP'ing only. Quests give less than 1% of your xp. The only reason you would do quests is to get a loot item.
Compared to modern day games EQ is a grind game. More so than Lineage and asian games. Soloing is out of the question for tanks and clerics when you hit lvl 20.
This is where the problems start. There is noone to group with anymore. The only people playing are max level now. So you end up making a solo'ing class, and grind for hours until people usually give up.
Community 6:
The community is high end only, meaning they'll be helpfull to answer your questions but that's it. You will not play with them until you reach max lvl which will take 6 months or so unless you have a friend that powerlevels you or you hack (which is common in Everquest).

While there are far fewer pick up groups than there used to be, you hardly need to be max level. My suggestion would be to join a decent family guild (I know of several active family guilds on Stromm where max level is the exception, not the rule)
Saying there is no xp while questing is false. You can pick up quite a bit of xp in the process of completing quests, with some decent gear at the end. For a new player, I recommend following the quest lines out of Crescent Reach, they will take you to mid 60's and have you decently geared in the process.
As for soloing, I would avoid warrior or rogue. A cleric, while not the fastest can solo all the way up to 80 just fine. One of my alts is a solo (untwinked) cleric project. Don't skip getting your AA's in your 50's and 60's, you'll regret having them later if you do (at least the basic ones for mitigation and spellcasting, depending on your class.)
Those family guilds I mentioned above often form alliences with other family guilds for optional low end raiding, this provides an entry point for new players to move into the higher end of the game if they so desire. It is not, however, needed to enjoy the game.

EQ is one of the best games for hardcore raiders and people who enjoy exploring dungeons and fighting mobs. There is much more content and zones then in any modern MMO. I would advice it to any fan of old MUDs and classic RPGs, but I hardly believe that new generation of MMO players (that came after WoW release) will enjoy EQ
I totally agree. MMO players post WoW would not enjoy this game. They would throw a fit if they had to run around so much. I remember running for so long before PoK but that just made it that much more of an actual adventure. And compared to WoW's flight system PoK would STILL be considered inconvenient.
Mobs that chase you till you zone! I love it! Not this chase for 20 yards crap.
That is one of the things that makes that game so immersive. Having to actually run for a while to get to a spot to grind. Or Having more that 4 choices of where to lvl up in the low lvls. Try dozens in EQ. CAMPS.....people making groups and actually doing what they wanted. Where did WoW get its instanced dungeons? LDoN baby. Oh but wait, i know in LDoN in the day if you pulled more than 2 or three mobs it was a whipe. Because it actually required skill to get through dungeons and not just gear and button mashing.
This game is only enjoyable for the people that dont think they should be catered to and dont want to play on easy mode.
