2007 Readers Choice Awards...WTF?

The "Most Anticipated Game of 2007" was Age of Conan...WTF?  Age of Conan beat out Warhammer by 4% (AoC at 29% and War at 25%).  While over the past year Warhammer has had over 1,340,000+ people checking out their forums, AoC has had only 1,080,000 this makes a total difference of 1.24% of people viewing WAR over AoC over the last year.

While I was rooting for WAR it seems that AoC will have a bit more of a following.  So a big Congrats to all of the AoC fans...I hope your game bombs on launch day.  LOL J/K.

It's pretty clear that both of these games are going to be fighting for the #2 spot in the MMORPG world (we all know it will be a while before WoW is de-throned).  The big question is going to be who will take the spot.  To the winner goes the subs, and most people only subscribe to 1 MAYBE 2 MMO's.  Who shall rake in the cash?  Who will burn out and be forgotten?

Well, when you look at what game has more forum activity and which game has its little portal viewed more, WAR wins easily, every day.

AoC won because I think it has more of a hardcore, rabid following, the type of following who actually votes. That, and MMORPG.com as a whole has a bias against games that aim to be mainstream and a hard-on for games that try to be different.

If WoW mobilized its fan base, it would win every category it was in, but its fan base is not that sort, and is definitely not the sort found around here. That is why it lost a lot of categories.

So, while I suppose AoC deserves a kudos, I also do not think it truly is the most anticipated game in terms of sheer numbers. Just by talking with my friends and looking around the Internet I have found that while both games are really anticipated, WAR has a larger following.

In the end, though, it really does not matter. We will see at the end of 2008 which game is the most popular, but even that does not matter much, as it is all about what you like best.

I dont know if it is "pretty clear"that only those 2 games will fight it out for 2nd place,There other not so much hyped games due this year and if both of those games have a bad release(I honestly think 1 of them will) then maybe another game not so hyped could start to snowball and beat them both. The only thing you can expect in the MMO world is the unexpected....

If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

Who cares about those types of rewards anyways, they're forgotten in less than a month anyways, it's not like the Novell or Darwin awards. Those awards are used for the most die hard, rabid, cannibalistic, fanboys as "bragging" rigths (like that exists on the internets amirite?

    Bollocks!

I plan on playing AoC and War not to mention a scifi MMO like SGW "since STO is turning into a piece of shizzle title". Now the question to ask is "how long will I be playing the game". Which ever as I see having the long term "enjoyment" fun factor is the one I'll most likely be playing the longest.

I find that currently from the developer blogs one will be more guild orientated "AoC" and the other more group orientated "Warhammer" from the info released anyways.

Although not as strong as some may describe in other threads, I agree that general MMORPG.com community opinion shows a degree of bias towards what is "non-WoW" or "non-mainstream". In the case between AoC and WAR, there can be several factors at work to create such a bias. One factor can be the stereotyping given to WAR as a WoW-clone by some voters; another factor can be that (in addition to Sornin's thoughts) a good portion of WAR fan base is also not the sort found around here - they can be considered slightly more "mainstream". Other voters may also have enjoyed the recent AoC trailers more - who knows?

Personally, I have to admit that I hold a stronger anticipation for AoC than WAR; I wonder what that says about me!

I disagree that this is a sign that AoC will have more support. Here's why:

    • This is a poll of MMORPG.com readers, not the entire gaming community
    • In gaming magazines/websites, I have seen more mentions of WAR than AoC
    • WAR already has a fanbase from Games Workshop's tabletop games.
    • Games Workshop based video games have done well recently, and should bring some players in.
    • AoC is rated M
    • Similarities to Warcraft has the potential to lure away WoW players.
    • Over 500,000 people have applied for the closed beta- a very good sign.

I do agree that it is disappointing that WAR didn't win the "Most Anticipated" award, but it's still racking up recognition elsewhere!

I think congrats should go out to Age of Conan for winning 'Most Anticipated' this year.

But the only poll that really matters is the one where voter's enter their credit card numbers and click 'Subscribe'.

The REAL Reader's Choice awards are going to be held later this year.

I hope you aren't trying to discredit WAR's guild potential.  From what I've seen, they have more guild functions that you can shake a stick at... and they are still adding.

Warhammer has also 700 more people who voted on the Hype meter here at mmorpg.com which would obviously mean that those extra people that voted didnt really care for the game. Those extra people could be the % in views extra on the forum side too.

Sorry to break this to you but, anticipation of a game doesnt mean its going to be successfull, but Age of Conan had more "hits" than warhammer in the first 3 weeks of December right from the launch of the voting for the readers choice. And in all the last month too.

Not to mention the plethora of awards AoC has won this year, and as quaintly as some people have pointed out all over the summer, awards mean nothing, its the final product that counts.

This might have something to do with this kick ass video:

    http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/setView/videos/gameID/191/videoId/1154  and the one underneath

    http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/setView/videos/gameID/191/videoId/1152

as opposed to these from warhammer during the voting times:

    http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/setView/videos/gameID/239/videoId/1156 <urrmm *cough*>

    and

    http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/setView/videos/gameID/239/videoId/1157 <EMO Mages>

By the way having more subs doesnt make any one game better than another, we learnt that with DAoC.

Subs doesnt equal a measure of quality of a game in content at all. Durability most likely will. And with that for me from what I know, AoC has more of it.

Neither will be burned out nor forgotton.

But really, deep down, everything aside, I hope BOTH games do well to forward to genre as a whole - honestly.

Same thing can be said for AoC, especially when you factor in the all the options for your PvP and PvE cities. But I dont think he was trying to discredit no.

**EDIT** Also at the same time as Voting for the awards PC Gamer Mag (N.American edition, January edition) mentions AoC and The Agency in its best of the rest for 2008 with an article, warhammer wasnt mentioned. (they even mentioned a possible KOTOR Online) So the AoC marketing is in full swing atm.

I only hope all the WOW kids choose WAR so they dont infest AoC.

Subscribtions: EVE, SWTOR WOW, WAR, DDO, VG, AOC, COV, FFXI, GW, RFO, Aion
    +plenty of F2P, betas, trials

Female Dwarf player: WOW, VG, WAR, DDO
    .
Due to the recent economic crisis and spending cuts the light at the end of the tunnel was turned off. Sincerely, God.

So do I! A target rich server will always be better than empty servers, no matter who the players are. I will sub to WAR as my number one MMO, but would really like a sci-fi MMO for my second sub. I tend to play two but no more than that at a time nowadays. I am hoping that Jmpgate Evolution can fill my expectations and give me the  dogfights and the build-your-own-ship-to fight-them-with-fun that I crave

All I know is that 2008 is shaping up to kick 2007's ass when it comes to MMORPGs.  I look down at the games in development, and am strongly interested in AoC and Warhammer, would definitely check out Chronicles of Spellborn, Warhammer, and Fallen Earth, and might play some of the others just to see what they were.

2007's MMOs, meanwhile, have stunk.  The winner of the 2k7 readers choice awards was LotR:O.  Not saying the game is the worst piece of junk ever programmed by mortal man - but aggressively mediocre could definitely be used.  Of course when weighed in against heavyweights like Tabula Rasa (currently playing it, but it has many problems) and Vanguard (blech)...

In conclusion, whatever happens, we, the players, are going to win in this fight.     Lets just sit back, and see how the games turn out.

AoC has a half a million applications for their beta as well.

This site has 700+ thousand members, tis a good chunk of the gameing community.

The fact that WAR has more threads and topics of discussion just tells me more children are posting.

    WAR=WoW Clone.

AoC rated M is a gooooood thing

AoC has a fan base too and they are not a bunch of sweaty nerbs that played cheesy table top games in their parents basement till they were 40 years old. AoC fans came from a large BOOK collection and some movies that came out. I am thinking I will play with the people that read books as apposed to sweat action figures.

A fine example of a quality "M-rated" player. I am sure glad only people as mature as this can play Age of Conan.

Ratings and maturity - zero correlation since 1994!

    Agreed right out.

I plan to play both. I do play Warhamer tabletop. I have read alot of the Warhammer books and the Conan books.  I'm not positive, I have count them all and add them up(not counting game codex) and there may be more Warhammer books than Conan. Its a close number I'm sure of that.

I don't think playing Warhammer automatically makes me a basement dwelling person. I still have far more manners and moral fortitude to not insult a massive base of people for some unforseen personal issue that makes me overreact and be rude. On the internet no less. I know doctors, lawyers, shool teachers, professional artist, and airplane pilots who live in my city who play Warhammer weekly and we are good friends. Many of whom will be playing WAR when it comes out in their free time.

Caligulug, you should try and act like the supposedly mature person you are and less of your inner troll.

Didn't Eve win almost every category last year? I love the game but when it wins the "Best PVE" category it makes it really hard to take any of the awards seriously. Having awards for games that haven't even been released yet seems even more silly. Unless you're some marketing director anyway.

Honestly 4% difference in a poll like this really doesn't mean much. Heck it could be a statistical anomoly even. It may just have to do with the amount of content specific to this site from one game to the next, whether it was mentioned on their forums, etc.

Don't get so bent out of shape over something so small. It's not like mmorpg.com awards really mean anything anyways.
