D/L'd LOTRO 4.5gig trial in 1.5 hours, D/L'd Vanguard in.....lol?

I posted this over at the Vanguard forums:

forums.station.sony.com/vg/posts/list.m

It will take well over 24 hours to download the Vanguard client. It took 1.5 hours to download LOTRO.

See a problem?

Turbine wants you playing their game. They give you the bandwidth to download and get in immediately. SOE needs to learn from this. A 24+ download is a major obstacle that Vanguard does not need.

Yeah try dloading EQ2 - I have attempted to trial that game so many times only to give up due to over long DLoad insanity.

If they don't want me to try it - I won't.

(I did trial it at launch - but figured I would try again years later as it sucked then)

    Nope

Truth is Vanguard is at least three times larger (in area) and also has far more art assets than LoTRO. With that said SOE will have a massive problem distributing the free trial because of such a large download.  Its something like 18 or so gigs.

Honestly, a good idea for SOE is to release a stripped down version (I think the trial island proposal might have been just that).  Or they could offer a version that strips out all assets above 'medium' quality level.  That'll cut down the overall size of the download considerably.

SOE, if they expect that trials would feature the download as it is now, won't help subscription numbers at all with the trial.  They need a solution to the massive size of the game as it is now for trial downloading.  Or they need to release some sort of way to get the DVDs for the game ($5.00??) or available when you buy expansion boxes (From other SOE games) at stores.

Truth is Vanguard is maybe 15-20x times bigger than LOTRO if you would count every inch of the land. VG has 19 races, 15 classes, lotro has 4 races 7 classes. VG has around 20 bigger cities and another 30-40 small villages. Lotro has 4 major towns and maybe 12 camps. It's not really surprising VG has 20 GB and Lotro 4.5gb is it?

    You discovered this now?

Or did you wait 12 months to spill the beans?

Most of you don't seem to be reading what the OP actually posted. He was talking about the speed of the download, not the size of the download.

It took you over 24 hours, personally it takes me 11 everytime i reinstall it...maybe it was just bad timing?

maybe so,but LOTRO has like 15-20x more content lol....

    uh REALITY CHECK! ZING!

VG=18gb of unoptimized art, and code assets. it was even admitted by a former dev that the people programming and doing work on the game barely had any real industry experience. so uh......yeah.....

Project was mismanaged.  I believe that optimization issues have more to do with not spending enough time optimizating them.   A little bit of advice about game development: you do not optimize right away.  That comes throughout the development of the project.

And honestly if anyone had something to complain about in terms of DLing anything itshould be me.  There is no highspeed in my little road bump of a town so I had to DL the patch with............... d....i.....a....l.....u...p.   Oh and the worse part about the dialup?  I had to check it every four hours because for some reason, or so the phone company says, FCC put in a 4 hour dialup disconnect rule.

It began at 70 hours and took about three days total to patch completely.  Of course I'm a very patient person.

They should look at Pirates of the Caribbean from disney.  They download the newbie areas and then do the rest of the download and patching in the background while you play.  Seems like a killer idea all games should steal.

You honestly think LoTR has 15 to 20 times the content of vanguard  , i dont even have to ask but you never played vanguard have you

i cant believe all you are complaining about vangaurd taking 24 hours to download or just a long time compared to lotro. now i like lotro and played it for about 2 months. but compared to vangaurd, lotro's graphics suck shit. it took me 1 hour to download vangaurd. and than maybe another 1.5 hours getting all the updates. i dont know if all you people saying it took forever to download have very terrible crap computers...but thats just not right, there cant be a way for a game to take 24 hours or more to dl unless its your computers fault.  really are you complaining about it taking forever because you want to play VG real bad, or you just know your computer sucks and your trying to take your anger out on how its sony's fault instead of yours.

I'm not complaining about the size of the download. I had Vanguard installed at one time. I know how big it is. The bandwidth allocated by SOE to download files from them is pathetic.

sykotics, I don't know if you're trolling to be cool or if your reading comprehension is non-existent.  I downloaded the 4.5 gig LOTRO trial in 1.5 hours, averaging 945 kb/s. Vanguard took over 24 hours and I was getting 41 kb/s. My computer doesn't suck, by any means. SOE still has many, many problems to iron out. Also, downloading 18 gigs in, you said what, 2.5 hours? Yeah, ok kid.

  • OrphesOrphes Member UncommonPosts: 3,039

With 41 kb/s would it not take 5 or so days to download 18GB?

The Vanguard .cab download from SOE, not using the patcher gives me quite fast download. Remember it to take something beetween 2 and 3 hours. The cab files amounted to 6 or 7 GB.

SOEs patching system has always been a problem.  Some people get lucky and have a fast link, but some don't.  I recall many stories of people needing 24+ hours to download something, just flat out not being able to connect or some other problem.  Then they do something boneheaded like release an expansion for 2 games on the same day as they kick of an open beta for another game.

I had to delete my Vanguard install from a couple months back after the patcher killed it, but had no trouble from a clean install from DVDs and then updating right after that.  Maybe an hour and a half total download time or less?

The content in VG isn't the problem at all.

You may want to try the new station-launcher, i've heard people have gotten better download speed with that, then what they got with the regular launch-pad.

    stationlauncher download

Note: This software is still in beta, and as such you might encounter some strange behavior when using it, although i've been using it my self for some time, and haven't had any problems a google couldn't fix.

That is the application that killed my first Vg install.

It might work better for the complete download though.

I've never played lotro but i've been playing vg casually from beta and there is a vaste amount of content. So many dungeons, towns, cities, outposts, islands, etc.

I think the problem gamers face is in vg it isn't layed out very well so many people get bored without ever exploring. You have to be an explorer to play vg, most people just want to grind.
