this is proberly the most asked and most silly question at the same time.
The answer to your question is:
No its all free
Develop the game is free
Servers and bandwith is free
The crew works for free
and so on..
Wait no thats not true.. what did you think before asking this question? did you even bother scroll down and see that 1000000 ppl ask the same .. some even cry about it? imo. if you cant afford it.. get a job!
Some of us dont like to pay for the game over and over again, waisting both time and money vs just our time In part Guild wars has such a big following because its free to play, there are many ppl out there who dont want to keep paying, so saying that they should suck it up and get a job is just plain ignorant and stupid...

Well GuildWars went F2P for a reason.. it sucked too much. RFO went F2P for the same reason.. Same as Archlord.
Some ppl like those games.. but the majority wont even put their eyes on em for more than 5 mins unless they are free 2 play !
Your average video game nowadays is clocking in 8-10 hours. Lets assume you avoid the $60 retail, and wait until it drops to $30. Then lets assume you play games for 10 hours a week, and you spend half that time playing old games (like, I dunno, GOW multiplayer or somesuch). You're spending $60 a month.
I might buy one game a month, probably more like one game every other month, and play an MMO. I'm spending a lot less than you do. MMOs offer more bang for the buck than other games. Seriously, after playing MMOs, I consider NON-SUBSCRIPTION GAMES the rip off. I mean look, I sink $60 in, what do I get? Anything? MMOs I usually get a free trial for a few days or even a week to see if I like the game. Go see if you can play Crysis for a week to see if you like it, before you buy it.
