I really liked general tone of it, for example words like this:
"Even if this game fails, even if all of the trucks and planes carrying copies of AOC to high street stores across the world crash and explode, and all of the developers succumb to a deadly curse, it will still have achieved something incredible."

Interesting read and a positive one towards the combat which was good to hear. The only thing I hate is the capture the flag type BG always hated those, they never interest me.
Out of every 100 men, 10 should not be there,
80 are nothing but targets, 9 are the real fighters.
Ah, but one, ONE of them is a warrior,
and he will bring the others home.

nice read, i remember buying CVG like 15 yrs ago!
they always know what they are on about, as previously said over the last couple of weeks, its just the balancing thats left to do really!
Jeez, sounds like its all starting to come together nicely. The combat thing sounds good, I personally wouldn't mind remembering combos, but it seems like it could annoy people. Though now its sounding like the GoW action sequences - press X, now press Square, now Square, now Triangle, ooh, you win. Choosing which one to initiate could make all the difference though as could the ability to flow from one to another if an opponent adapts (and damn do I hope they adapt to your attacks mid-attack).
Still hearing jack about the magic, but... eh... beta.

I'm not really planning on playing this, but if what's in that review is true, it sounds like it is shaping up nicely!
D.
But about the NPC's with their active shielding, its just that, active! So you swing from the left they increase the defense to the left. Some combos might need a starter / lead directional swing from the left so that could be a combo you would save in my opinion for later on in the fight. Its been said a couple of time about the shielding from devs and also that as described in the interview they are white and that devs have said they believe an option to tune them visually down, like the alpha channel too, as some people said they might be an immersion break or had concerns from them.
Good thing is this isnt a game where you can leave your guy or girl fighting for 15 mins then come back. Couple of other reviews say that the NPC's adapt very well to your style of fighting.
Spellweaving will make or break the combat in this game...as of now its just the same stand still and cast, wait for the bar to fill up bs we have played a million times...
Couldn't agree more. Unfortunately, this one of the things that many MMO's will carry over from WoW. It's good for casual PvP, it's clean, safe and sterile. It's horrible for folks who loved DAoC and Shadowbane PvP styles. Oh well, have to take the good with the bad.
Dont forget that CVG buried AOC in last preview. They were the ones to write that combat feels clunky.
I for one am glad they did. I am glad Funcom is smart enough to revisit combat.
And remembering all combos , i am glad that is out.
Indeed a positive review. But nothing new really. From a logistic point of view, the only info we really needed was that CVG changed their mind on combat.
But hey, I read anything about AoC at the moment, and every bit of new read is welcome

I dunno, as long as Capture the Flag isn't the ONLY thing happening, I'm fine with it in there. I mean MMOs are about variety - the more to do, the better it is, so even if I don't personally use a feature, I'm always happy its there.Capture the flag is fun for logging on for 20 minutes and PvPing. I don't think it should have ever been as important as WSG was, but for a fun way to waste 20 minutes... why not?

As long as they change that girly announcer in CTF then I'm happy
Well Capture the flag and drunken brawling are only mini games. The real PvP is something between DaoC and Shadowbane.
You have the borderlands where guilds can compete for control of the area, building battlekeeps (small cities) or towers over resources and then try to hold them against competing guilds.
It will be a constant cut throath battle for power.
For people not in the big guilds that fight these wars there is the option to hire yourself out as a mercenary for one side or the other.
The capture the flag game is just a place to quickly try out 1 group vs 1 group combat and I predict that people will quickly tire of it except when known group challenge each other.
"You are the hero our legends have foretold will save our tribe, therefore please go kill 10 pigs."
Okay, this isnt knocking you guys, but in general when I hear that, it makes me feel like the people making the comment dont really understand why the mini-games can be bad. I'm not saying you guys dont, just saying in general! So please dont think I'm criticizing, because I really dont know what your reasons are, for all I know, you just have a different perspective.
Here's the thing, WoW mini-games help kill world PvP, because they because a grinders paradise, and there was no real viable alternative. There are rewards for gaining rank, but where are the rewards for capturing a town? Oh...wait..you cant do that in WoW. It's not so much that the mini-games are bad, it's how they are implemented in the overall game.
With AoC, from what I've read, the heart of PvP will be in the Border Kingdoms, with benefits granted for possessing Battlekeeps, Towers, and Resource Nodes. It's been implied that there will be some rewards from mini-games, and that's okay. The key, is that those rewards cant even come close to equaling, or overshadowing the BK stuff. This way, there is balance in PvP. The time consuming rewards of the BK are really worth something, and then mini-games are exactly what they should be, just another venue for some little PvP, not the focus.
A well done game should be able to balance the two. I'd like to think that AoC is on the right path, but I really want to hear what the rewards are for the mini-games, before I make up my mind that they are 100% doing it right.
