SOE canned spam?

After about an hour of my free play I noticed there was something missing from the game and I just couldn't put my finger on what it was. Then it hit me!

THERE'S NO GOLD SPAM!

That's the good news.

The bad news is:

Now there's Chuck Norris spam

Yes the spam filter is working much better now but i still get the occasional " you have lost connection to the chat servers" but its more rare the last 2 weeks. a few are still getting through though but i am on a personal quest to report everyone that i get.

    Say, that reminds me.....

Do you remember when SOE wanted players to /petition every gold spammer every time they spammed?

Before you ask, the answer is yes. This was during the period they were trying to squash 300 bugs per update. I bet they have a filing cabinet full of those old petitions somewhere.

Can you imagine being a GM back then?

Thats probably when VG lost most of it's staff...they resigned haha! it was so bad then that i found it hard to talk to friends as thier text dissapeared in 2 seconds of being sent due to gold spam.

HA! i remember hearing my first gold offer on eq. it was at that point when players realised just what was happening on the internet. it seemed crazy that people were selling in game items for real money. I have never ever brought any items or cash in any game and never will. though i do admit to being a bazaar addic in eq :( i used to browse, buy low and sell high! but that doesnt really count as an exploit i think.

I think they did a great job dealing with the spam.

I thought i was really popular getting tells all the time like every 30secs ....but it was from the gold farmers

The funniest thing to me is if I wait long enough I can actually crash the game by clicking the spam tab because there is soooooo much there

An occasional bit of spam comes through, but the new filter seems to be working great. Much more pleasant now with that in place.

Spam seems to be back in full force

Wish they could find a way to keep this out of the region chat.

Yeah, only within the last week has spam come back.  The spammers figured out a way around the spam protection- it's the glorious evolution of protection vs. opposition.

In a couple weeks they'll find a way to squash the spam again, then a couple months after that they'll be back again.

    rinse and repeat

They will never be rid of the gold sellers... not as long as someone can make a money off selling game gold.

Honestly, the only way I see them getting rid of gold sellers, is if the company starts selling the gold themselves. Then their would be no need for the farmers.

Beyond that the only thing I can see is prohibit players from transfering money period. And in reality what need do you have to transfer money to another character? Giving a friend money to buy something? Buy it for them and give them the item.

The only way they could get arround it, if you couldn't transfer gold, is for them to buy a cheap item off of someone for 1,000,000 gold.  And in that situation the company would need to have a system in place that would auto evaluate the sale. If the avg price for an item is 100g and the transaction shows the item being bought for 1,000,000g  the sale would be automatically blocked and both parties reported.

Now it would seem that their is a small army out there that is collecting and transfering this gold to main staple accounts, can't all be done through trials, then the main accounts hand off to the trials, who then hand off to the buyer to complete the transaction.

If they used the system I mentioned (monitoring sales by avg price of the item) they could track that back to those main accounts.  As they would probably not take the time to transfer 1,000,000g  in increments of 1000g a pop. Especially since they would need to have an item to trade each time that averaged about 700g or so, both the seller to get the cash from the main account and the buyer to get the money from the trial account seller.

I could be wrong about the way they operate but thats just the way it seems.

At least the have gotten rid of the annoying /tell spamming (I haven't received anything the last couple of months). It takes 5 seconds to put the spammer in regional/auction on /ignore, so I don't see it as a big issue - spam will always exist no matter what they do.

Actually, for me anyway, the /tell spam I can live with. All of the /tell spam I get goes straight to my spam tab and I never even look in it. The region spam bothers me a lot though. As far as using /ignore, I do that everytime I see region spam (as well as /report), but I still add as many as 10 names in less than 15 minutes at times. That gets very annoying if I'm trying to arg.... errr communicate with someone in region chat.

Maybe the spamming in regional is more common on the US servers then the EU one since it's a bigger potential customer base for the goldsellers. On Halgar I estimate I have to put about one or two spammer(s) an hour on ignore. More spam is generated by all the players expressing their thoughts about the spammer, discussions about the bad spelling in the messages (mainly bashing the education system in China) and more or less bright ideas about how to solve the spamming problem..

Well, seems we've come full circle and are back to the original tactic of /petition the spammers. I have to believe that anyone with a /petition concerning their gameplay is going to be upset having to wait for GMs to wade through ALL the spam petitions until they look at anything else.
