When I tried the game again some time ago, I think I had some free time, I couldn't get the chat system to work. Not sure if it was broken or simply not on for me but I couldn't talk to anyone and the only talk I heard was spammers outside of the Starports but ignore worked so that was good. Can anyone explain to me how I can setup the chat system to work so I can talk to other players in the game?
I'm interested in playing the game again but really not being able to talk to other players or hear anyone else is a horrible experience. I can deal with not having anyone to group with but I at the least want some socialization other then putting spammers on ignore when I go by certain areas. Thanks.

You can send personal messages to people with "/tell <name>". You can reply to messages you get with CTRL + R or "/r <message>". If you want to chat in spatial or any other chat channel, with the default keymap you need to hit Enter first.
If you're on a 14 day trial or Vet trial, you have a character limit on how much you can say in chat channels. If you hit the cap you then need to wait 10ish mins before you can chat again. Tells are excluded from this restriction.
Depends on the server you're on really as many servers have chat channels set up for different communities, such as Pilots and Collections. There's also default Faction channels that can sometimes be active with people. No channels are assigned by default though, so they tend not to be too busy as not many know how to join channels.
SWG is the only MMO that Ive played where you dont have a default general chat channel that everyone uses. Even the playermade channels are very empty most of the time with a few exceptions.
In my experience, most players use their guildchat or groupchat (or Ventrilo/teamspeak). This is why it is very tough for new players to get started in that game. A lot of the times you wont get even an answer to your questions even if there are a few players with the (HELPER) tag hanging around the starport.
I had to find my answers on the official forums and dont really mind doing that. But some players probably expect some kind of community as new player. O well, tough luck.
Most people on my server use their guild and faction channels. Guild comes by default when you join a guild. Faction is still optional though.
We also have a Heroics channel set up, but it is rarely used. Unless there is an official Heroics channel noone's told me about.
