any nethack freaks in here? I would be interested how far you got and if you ever managed to become the demi? Of yourse without cheating or cheaply copying your save-game!
My greatest nethack achievement thus far was a (dont laugh) lvl 12 wizard in goblin mines lvl 3 (or 4 - not so sure about this). I probably would have gone further, but when I showed a friend of mine my character (in a proud and a bit intoxicated manner) I accidently quit teh game (instead of saving), resulting in the death of my little wiz and the unspectacular message: Rest In Peace...

apparantely I am the only old-school geek here ^^
I've beaten both Moria and Angband. Angband in particular took many weeks to beat.
also tried angband a little and that was quite enjoyable, though nethack has such a nice simplicity to it. never tried moria. gotta check that out
I don't think I'm alone to state that I phail at understanding what you're really talking about?
nethack is a game that has been released in 1987 originally and is still being refined. I think it is best summarized under the catchphrase: "the developers have thought of it all" the possibilities are endless. You can - given taht you have found the right items - transform into a dragon, lay eggs and transform back and the dragons fight on your side (only something I have read; never maanged to do it myself)
Originally the game has ASCII graphics, but now exists also as a graphical version. The real pros play the old school version, but I personally prefer teh graphical interface, as I struggle enough with the complexity of teh game.
Oh yeah, very important: If you die, you are dead and have to start all over again ^^
If interested get nethack here:

If you have not tried it you definitely have to play it once. But do not be discouraged: it takes some time. a real help for beginners are alll the nethack spoilers on the web...
I suggest you read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roguelike
Other Rogue-like games? hm... I play Dwarf Fortress from time to time, the only problem is that I dunno how to get food.
You can find the game on http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/
cool another rogue-like I have not heard about
will try asap i have some time
Haven't played any in awhile, but here are a few to check out.
Ancient Domains of Mystery
Dwarf Fortress
Incursion
Sandband (Skill angband)
Classic Rogue (remake of the original)
DoomRL (Rogue-like version of Doom complete with sound)
And that should keep you occupied through a couple of nuclear winters....
wow. thanks for the links.
these kinds of games are definitely the games for the solitary island ^^ (next to civ of course)
Oh, and to keep from being *dead* dead, you make a copy of your save file and move it to a different folder. Do this whenever you save. That way, if you die, you delete the copy in your current folder and move the copied one back. Make sure it has the same file name.
There is NO WAY I would replay Angband if I was at, say dungeon level 70 (you have to get to 100 to beat the game).
true. but I have to say I quite enjoy this: "you slip. you break your neck. you are dead." its a bit like the diablo hardcore mode. but on the other hand also extremely frustrating!!
you are probably right: without "cheating" this game is unbeatable ^^
