Of all the MMORPGs I've played (all 6) the past few years, I've spent the most time playing AO. It's got a very steep learning curve at first, but the community is strong and the play is emersive. I came in after all of the initial bugs were smoothed out. I've enjoyed the Shadowlands expansion and I'm anticipating the upcoming Alien Invasion Expansion. There are 2 things that bring AO up short, counter-intuitive game controls & outdated graphics engine... It could also use a revamp of the player driven Economy.
After AI is released, I really hope the FunCom folks will take all of the best elements of AO/SL/AI and start developing AO II on a new graphics engine.

I didn't like Shadowlands at all. It was like a wanna-be EQ with horrible camping and tons of time sinks. I hope AI really stays away from all that.
Yup, AO needs new graphics engine. Outdated graphics are going to be hugest reason why new players don't join to AO after AI is released.
I think that AO's game controls are pretty good. They could be more customizable, but still they are much more better than for example in DAoC (IMHO). I also didn't like from Shadownlands and hope that AI will lead game to correct direction (and gives reason for me return).

Think what it needs the most is a upgrade for the character models.
I do think most of the enviroment is good looking. I prefer AO enviroment over SWG even if SWG use more modern direct X features.
They updated alot of the graphics with the SL release, and it does look quite a bit better since then, esp. water and lava. I have no complaints about the environment at all, even if it isn't as pretty as SWG. I agree with Eldron completely, Character models need a big update. They need to increase the polygons, and more importantly update the animations. There's some really goofy ones involving 2 handed melee weapons. I've read where a couple of people at Funcom have said the same, although it's been stated they won't update the graphics engine when AI comes out. Hopefully not too long after though. Maybe along with a social boosterpack (What AI was originally meant to be, before they fouled SL up so bad they needed something big to cover it up) that would include the social clothing tabs that everyone has begged for, everyone up to the top has said would be great, but somehow 3 years later isn't coded in. But now I've started to rant

AO, Atlantian Server
Go ahead and rant, everyone else does.
A social clothing tab would be so cool. And more emotes. There are some things I know people would like to show, but can't because of lacking in some types of emotes. And ignoring the comments by otehr people, more dance moves and complicated actions would be nice. The action to be able to lie down wasn't much of an addition. I hope that the social things they do add with AI will be worth it. I would hate to have a an expansion that is so buggy it isn't worth using in of the new stuff in it.
No small overhaul would do. SL sceneries are a nice improvement, but I'd consider anything less the graphical quality level of Lineage 2 waste of effort as it wouldn't be enough make new players looking for candy interested.
I do hope they'd do that, but compared to doing AO2 or going for whatever new title they're working on it seems a bit unlikely to me.
AO does have an excellent game play, and the sub-130 levels are quite interesting. Just sad that there's nothing in the game after that
I do not think that tehre will ever be a AO2. But I think trhat the expansion after Ai will get us a new grafic engine. The engine is old but the game still has nice grafic. the Sl landskape looks kool, and RK is ok. A new grafic engine will make it work better on the new PC's . There are a lot of nice looking armors and stuff.. we have some eye candy in the game.
If you wnat nice grafic go to a shouter ... Ao is for the gameplay , comunity and other things.
Bdw, I play on the lowest grafic setings
Well, I keep an eye on the AO progress I'm not aware of any plans after AI, so don't get overtly excited about some fictive "thorough graphics overhaul". Having been away from AO for a few months now, I've especially noted the lack of any news and info on future plans from FunCom, and that's really a bad, bad sign that doesn't bode well for the future plans the game company has for the game.
I've seen on a DEV chat (forgot where, sorry guys ). They said that they are planing to give AO a graphic overhaul.
But think MMORPG here guys, good graphics don't make a good game. Although it would be nice

Amen, Ive played 14 MMORPG's in total and if I find myself doing the same thing, over and over for more than a week I quit the game. In Starwars Galaxies very nice graphics but combat sucked (imo), crafting sucked, skills sucked, and content sucked making me quit the game after 4 days. Was an artisan with 3rd crafting skill thingy, had a few of those things that mine resources for you and had a stupid pet some wookie gave me, after I had learned what waakaoooooooooowalal waooooo means.
LOL... soooo umm what does it mean? heh...
Yeah but if youare going for purely eye candy then alot of times you will be disappointed due to lack of gameplay, repedativeness, grindage, and just plain out insanity due to lack of content cause htey wasted all their resources on Eyecandy heh.

I really would like to see them do an AO 2. Having a fresh game with new graphics and hopefully more dynamic combat will bring more new players to the game. People like to feel like they are starting on the same footing as everyone else. Only a new game will provide that (hence the creation of EQ2) It is hard to start off at lvl 1 especially in a game like AO where the majority of players are over lvl 50 or more like over 100. It feels empty when you are the only new character in the newbie zones.
I say make a new game with better graphics and use some of the great features of other games that have come out since then. Among these would be player cities, more practical and affordable vehicles, more practical and useful tradeskills available at lower lvls, more profession specific special combat moves and animations along with a que for using them and making macros to chain them together.
I really dont think AI is going to save this game from its decline into obscurity and obsolescence. THe only thing that will help funcom now is a completely new game.
Oh and soylentleets theres no way you can get an accurate or objective look at a game in 4 days. I went from AO to SWG as well and found it to be very different and uncomfortable for a while but now I feel it has the best combat of any game out there its not as boring as waiting for brawl or full auto to pop up again so you can mash it down over and over. The combat in SWG is harder but more rewarding in the sense that winning a fight especially against another player is based more on what you do during the fight than on your level or gear.
