You know what baffles me, for years now every dev and community relations official has said "yes we work on the game and play in the game!" they constantly make out that all they do is work and play, if this is true, how on earth do they miss all those bugs that would be seen while playing? My conclusion, there liars they dont freakin play
Smed himself admited that he plays WoW and likes it as I recall, soo there is your answer, the money that you pay funds the dev's WoW accounts.
there are quite a few people who do play, fyi and why post here? the devs dont read these forums, so go yourself a favor and complain about the bugs there as the devs might actually see it, they've been a lot more active in the community lately
Active Devs in a barely existing community?
I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few hard working developers trying desperately to salvage something useful out of the mess this game became. It's an uphill battle at this point I think, with too many problems, too few resources, and a game and company with a badly tarnished reputation.
They'll probably do some good things. Really anything they fix will be a good thing, and there are a lot of options to choose from. I guess only time will tell whether or not they manage to get the game into a state that has broader appeal, and whether or not SOE can possibly earn back the trust needed to win a broader client base. In my mind these outcomes would require small miracles.
God himself couldn't save SWG at this point. Too much bad blood. Besides, SOE has already made it plain as day that they don't want anyone with half a brain as a customer (remember the "too much reading" comment?).
I'll play a game by a company (CCP) that doesn't insult my intelligence. But watching SWG and SOE both founder and die give me more entertainment than even classic servers would, so I still pay attention.
I'll keep watching too. Partly out of curiosity to see if some of these things ever get fixed. I just can't believe those bugs are still there 0_o. I also watch to see if SOE is communicating honestly about the state of their game or their intentions. I've seen some really shocking inconsistencies between official press about the game and players' experiences and observations. History suggest that if these folks can get away with it, they'll try to promote their product through a marketting campaign that is ethically dubious.
I think it can't hurt for SOE, and LA for that matter, to know that people really are watching to see if their actions fit their words.
I'm also watching to see if this thing can either treat the StarWars story and fanbase with dignity (back to the realm of miracles) or if they can at the very least bring this whole sordid experience to some kind of dignified or merciful end.
The Imperial Hat could well be the poster boy for lameness in SWG, given that it took them YEARS to fix it, and when they did, they fixed it ONLY for male avatars.
CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.
Even more lame: They NEVER gave the Rebels the helmet that was seen in every single movie, except the ROTJ one. Which they then took out because of "timeline issues". Then they proceeded to add crap that was over 20 years old into the game (EP3) that was somehow better than modern technology.
The `tards in charge never have had a clue as to content or as to timeline, mostly because they never have had any sort of vision except expediency. Which is why they never listened to their customers, CUNGE'd the game instead of concentrating on content, bug fixes, NEW systems in game (such as airspeeders) and consequently lost 90%+ of their peak sub base.
SWG is where it is because it deserves to be there. After the crap this bunch of crooks has pulled time and again they don't even deserve the tiny player base they still have.
God himself couldn't save SWG at this point. Too much bad blood. But aren't many of the issues and concerns you raise (all good ones BTW) effectively answered at this point ArcAngel3? SOE has been at this act with Galaxies for several years now, shocking inconsistencies and all. I think we're way past the point of pressuring them by watching.
I am through pressuring them, asking them for change, classic server, etc. I went to the summit, I talked to Devs, I tried everything I could do to persuade, warn them, etc. They didn't and won't listen and as a consequence the game has collapsed beyond any hope of recovery. Even if they rolled back to Pre-CU tomorrow (which they won't do), I wouldn't come back. I'm not going to give these cynical, lying, jerks one more penny.
At this point I am basically an observer, watching SWG and SOE both spiral down to inevitable collapse.
The best we veterans can do at this point is warn others as to what they are getting themselves in for when it comes to SWG or SOE, saving them money and heartache.
I'm through talking to SOE, trying to get them to mend their mistakes, etc, and so should everyone else. I've moved past that, and moved on. Moved on to the consequence phase.
We need to see to it that there are permanent, lasting consequences for the people and companies involved, SOE, John Smedley, Freeman, "Toilet Boy" Blair, Helias, McDaniel, et all, and LEC, Jim Ward, Nancy McIntyre, Julio Torres, et all as well. These individuals can make the industry better by exiting it. I will not purchase any product these people or companies are associated with. I want everything they are involved with to be a financial failure so that these people are also forced to move on, to another career.
They wouldn't listen to us, and forced us to move on, to other games, or to no MMO at all. Time to use the "Force" against them, the force of public naming and shaming, reminding potential customers of what these people have done in the past, and because of that, could definitely do AGAIN, and let the market do the work of removing these cancers from the gaming industry.
God himself couldn't save SWG at this point. Too much bad blood. Hiya afro ^_^. Man every time I see that trainwreck picture of yours with the SOE team meeting caption, it makes me chuckle--still. Thanks for that lol.
Re. pressuring SOE, I think of it more in terms of promoting accountability to the consumer . I don't want them to think that they can say whatever they want to try to suck people into the bugfest and take their cash. If they say things that aren't accurate, and I happen to notice, I'll make note of it on an appropriate public forum. I'm past going out of my way to do this, but if I happen to notice something I think is noteworthy, I'll post it for others to see and discuss.
It bothers me on some ethical level when I see corporations misleading people and suckering them out of their hard earned money. If a few people see some accurate information and avoid a bad experience, well I guess I think that's cool .
Take that one StarWars Insider game review that came out about 6 months after the NGE. The one that referred to the NGE AS the "Trials of Obi Wan." It talked about how the new combat mechanics in the Trials of Obi Wan were more elegant than the old game. It talked about how you interacted more with key characters from the movies than the old game. It then talked about how "grousing" "diehards" like us should be ignored, and people should come and try this wonderful new version of the game. Lol, oh ya and it said how cool the Trials of Obi Wan was because it had no item decay or debt like other games. At that time, the devs were discussing the possible return of decay on the discussion boards.
That article was so full of outright falsehoods I can't believe it was legal to print it. As we all know, the Trials of Obi Wan and the NGE were certainly not one and the same thing. The Trials expansion was released first, and the NGE effectively borked many of its rewards and features.
We also know that the combat was anything but elegant, with many of the new combat abilities failing to function at all, animations removed, and combat speed rendered hyperkinetically unrealistic.
Further, I didn't interact with movie characters anymore in the NGE. It didn't in fact add any content to the game whatsoever. Quite the opposite in fact, a lot of content that people had been working on for years was removed.
As for insulting veteran players by dismissing them and calling them grousing diehards, well that was just salt in the wound.
I could go on about the Trials of Obi Wan stratics chat telling everyone what to look forward to in the new expansion, how the imminent release of the NGE was never mentioned and how features talked about in the chat were, as I've said, removed or rendered useless by the NGE. For those that are now feeling compelled to say, "that was 2 years ago, give it up, stop crying etc." read on true believers lol, I'm about to get current. This is just the "case history" to highlight an ongoing pattern of disreputable behaviour.
This list of misleading statements could grow rather quickly, now that I'm on that train of thought. Most recent ridiculous statements from LA ignore the existence of the NGE and talk about how and why the game is such a success 0_o. At the same time SOE is apologizing for the "cardinal sin" of not listening to the players, and the "mistake" of the NGE. Now SOE and LA are publically contradicting each other.
SOE's party line is that they've been dilligently working to fix bugs, the game is improving and the population is increasing. At the same time, Smed said at the last summit meetings that he'd fast track server mergers...and then, of course, server mergers don't happen. If the population is increasing, why fast track mergers in the first place? If they've been fast tracked. I think that was about a year ago now, why haven't they happened? If they've been so busy fixing bugs for the past 2 years, why are the freakin arrows still busted, shots through walls, spawns in objects, broken looping sound, blocky graphics bugs etc. etc. etc.
If no one's watching, these people will evidently say anything and everything, true or false, to try to get people to hand over their cash.
No, the more I think of it, I'll continue to be observant.
I agree though, I doubt very much that anything I say will fizz on the executive decision makers at SOE. My comments are aimed more at unsuspecting consumers at this point I guess. Maybe (another miracle needed) SOE will see that inaccurate marketting strategies do not a successful business make, but I'm not holding my breath.
Lol, I thought I was done my response until I started typing about that article from the Insider, that got me going. No frustration is directed at you though afro, I enjoy your posts Keep the faith.
I'd find it hard to quibble with that critique of the Star Wars Insider piece, even if I wanted to; but I don't - I think it's right on target. And if your main thrust is really a sort of home grown Public Service Announcement, or consumer advocate, then you've got 110% of my support. I completely agree that there are things still broken that have no good justification to still be so at this stage. I think maybe I detected in your posts a vibe of new indignation at some new and abhorrent practice by LA/SOE management, and I guess that's what I reacted to. In retrospect that may have been a bad read on my part.
My point: This is the same 'ole SOE, doing the same 'ole dance. Whether they have senior coders, junior coders, regardless if they by chance have a any number of team members who may individually still really give a crap about this project ; collectively they can't be taken seriously when it comes down to it. They'll never get traction against that bug list, no matter how much they posture about listening to customers. Their act should come as no surprise to any of the vets around here; and it no longer gets a rise from me - but I'll bet you knew that already!
Well, the "grousing veterans" got the last laugh. Look at all but 3-4 of the servers. Empty. And the ones with population are much MUCH smaller than they were pre NGE.
We haven't forgotten LucasArts guilt in the NGE. At the minimum they were complicit, even if they didn't develop it. The sucessor, even if it's developed by Bioware is going to be hurt by the NGE. I, for one, don't plan on subscribing initially, if at all. Zero chance if SOE is involved in any way, I will NEVER contribute to the wealth of John Smedley ever again.

I think you got the vibe right actually. For some bizarre reason I was actually shocked that these bugs were still unfixed lol. I know on one hand I shouldn't be shocked, but I was, in spite of myself. I guess part of me can't believe any company could really be that bad. I struggle to comprehend the depths of whatever the heck is wrong with SOE. It defies description.
Every once in a while something catches my attention and breaks through this disbelief, and I see the reality of the situation in all its naked horror. This time it was mainly the waypoint arrows lol.
My goodness I remember when the patch went live that broke those bloody things. At the time we were deluded into thinking we were dealing with reasonable people at SOE. So, many of us, probably thousands, sent respectful bug reports saying, "oh hey btw, this latest patch broke all the waypoint arrows, could you please fix that, thank you." LMAO how naive was that? Man that was about 3 years ago now.
I have a hard time believing that other human beings are so bad at what they do that this has never been addressed. But the evidence is there for all to see. Amazing, truly amazing.
It just seems like you have a more consistently accurate view of the situation than me. I still get surprised, when really I shouldn't.

Hey so you were at the summits? I'd love to read a post or two about your experience there. Some good online friends of mine went, and we've discussed that. I'd like to hear your take on it.
Wasn't collision detection supposed to be fully functional 6 months after the NGE? Lies lies and more lies.
I remember the devs talking about collision detection being a high priority, and I remember Smedley telling us to give them 6 months to have the kinks worked out ot the NGE.
Well it's been more than 2 years: No collision detection, plenty of kinks.
Wasn't collision detection supposed to be fully functional 6 months after the NGE? Lies lies and more lies.
The lying Niemoidian scum told us not to judge the NGE too harshly because once collision detection was in (yes, you remember correctly, they said six months into the NGE there would be collision detection) it would enable the combat system to function "as intended" and we would be totally swept off our feet (or lower paws, in the case of the Wooks) by its dazzling effect on combat.
Right.
Sure.
I believed it so much that I bought the bridge "under construction" north of Coronet in game from some disreptutable looking Rodian named Smed Lee.
Just yet another broken promise in a virtually infinite series of broken promises by developers too incompetent to get default prose strings to display properly.
CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.
