I want to start off by saying that I am not flaming the game, and I'll admit that I am very much a graphics whore.
I really like the gameplay and the graphics of EQ2. However, I've noticed that there is a real lack of different armors available. I have been checking the brokers and using the dressing room to see what all is out there, and almost without exception, all the outfits are the same with just different colors and very minor differences. For example, cloth armor all looks pretty much the same. You have the robes that all look sort of baggy, you have the dresses for the females that have the front legs ripped out, and you have the shirt and pants combo that looks sorta like armor, but not really. They're all the same, except the colors.
Anywho, I'm just surprised by this in a game that otherwise seems very polished and nicely done.

It has gotten better since EQ2 was released, the armor choices were really bland back in the day. Theres still not a lot of different looking armor now but it is surprising what you can achieve with a little imagination and experimentation mixing different types of armor together. It is slowly improving and should allow for more unique looking armor once we get the skeletal revamp for the models.
Take a look at THIS thread for instance from the Swashbuckler forum to see some of the creativity of some of the outfits people are coming up with.
Also HERES another thread from the Shadowknight forum with a lot of plate combinations.
Yes, I do know what your getting at. A lot of the armor is very bland looking, and doesn't really alter much throughout the game. Later tiers do have some unique looks, but the lower tiers do get a bit monotonous. Mastercrafted armor is usally much better looking, and admittedly usually out of the price range of a new player. I particularly like the Blackened Iron and Steel plate.
I should also point out that the stuff you find on the broker is not all of it. There is a huge amount of stuff (and usually the best looking) that isn't available to buy because it is NO TRADE loot. You have to loot it yourself. I'd suggest a few dungeon and instance runs. At low levels places like Wailing Caves, Blackburrow, Crushbone Keep, Stormhold, Fallen Gate, Ruins of Varsoon, etc all have a few named mobs that drop a decent amount of no trade loot. Some of these places have closed instances too, one of my faves is in Ruins of Varsoon, where toons in the mid 30s can get some nice stuff, a crimson mage robe, and a really nice scout chest with a skelly-form ability for extra dps.
Experience can teach you where a lot of the best loot is. Some quest rewards too, things like armor questlines @ level 20, HQs, etc. It's all there if you know where to go.
For brand new toons I'd recommend Timorous Deep. Evil toons can live there, but a good toon can easily get there too. Just beg/borrow/steal 60 silver for a boat ride to Nek forest. Catch the boat to Butcherblock Mountains. Then when you get to the docks head left along the beach and up a ramp to catch a special gold griffon ride to Timorous Deep. The quest rewards here are awesome. I started a Sarnak Inquisitor here and he's currently running around in some really shiny metallic green plate armor (similar to rare mastercrafted feysteel), which I loved so much I've kept it in my appearance tab.
Currently returned to Norrath after disliking Hyboria.
