Recommend an MMO for the 2 of us?

Hi,

Me and my girlfriend are looking for an MMO to play togother, mostly alone (just 2 of us). Perhaps more grouping in later levels.

Here are my requirements/prefereneces:

  • Not web-based or free or grinding asian crap.
  • Varied fun content, preferably quest driven (i.e. not endlessly killing lots of same mobs)
  • Good graphics/art would be nice

Here are the games we've tried (i.e. not to be recommended)

  • Everquest 2
  • Dungeons and Dragons Online
  • Lord of the Rings Online

Thanks

A duo can go far in EverQuest (original). I think it's well worth checking out. Tons of content.

    Try Lineage 2

Guild Wars maybe, I can play that game alone or with a friend without problems. And the art is the best of any MMO I've played, but that's subjective. Almost everything you do is quest driven. It's not grindy like EQ.

Lineage 2 is fun too, but it's more grindy.

While i much appreciate the suggestion, i think i will have to decline. I have only briefly checked the game out myself a long time ago, but from that experience i learned that EQ has a slow grind...though i'm open to the idea that there may be a lot of content i missed to play through rather than mob grind. And then theres graphics, which while they certainly dont make or break a game, they do greatly impact on the enjoyability, and as a new player, EQ looks very bland and empty of detail (from my limited experience and screenshots).

We just dont have the time to get totally stuck in and dedicate loads of time, we want something fun, at a good pace and with good varied content. LotRO provided this for a while but i lost interest unfortunately.

    Thanks

You can try GuildWars, its not a grind game, and is perfect for solo or small parties(since the limit of players in a zone is max 8 people).

There are 4 games in the series, 3 stand-alone games and 1 expansion that requires one of the 3 stand-alone games. Each stand-alone game has its own continent with a different storyline, the first game that came out has 6 core professions(Elementalist, Warrior, Monk, Mesmer, Ranger, Necromancer), the second and third game in the series have the 6 core professions + an additional 2 professions per game(Assassin and Ritualist in GuildWars Factions which was the second game, Paragon and Dervish in GuildWars Nightfall which is the third game).

Lots of quests to do, lots of titles to earn, great PvE thanks to the instance based gameplay(outside the city, its just you and your party, which can be either NPCs or other players up to 8 other party members). PvP is one of the best in the MMORPG world(id not the best), its based on YOUR skills as a player and team work, rather than item based(like ohhh World of Warcraft for instance where your items will determine the outcome of a battle).

Best of all, after you buy GuildWars you will never have to pay for it again, meaning there are no monthly fees.

Right, I totally agree, but I've told people that a few times before, you can solo in EQ. There's just a chance you'll go totally insane after the 6th month or so when you're still not max lvl. It's a total grind game now, lack of players and huge AA increases caused that.

Like others said, NCsoft has a good line of games, Guild Wars is their most 'casual', lineage is more of a grind game, but it's nothing like EQ, I find it fun. Guild wars sounds the best for your choice though.

I dunno, they all kinda suck recently.  Guild Wars is a good suggestion, and honestly WoW isn't bad, no matter what you hear on these forums (though the graphics are getting a little dated).

This is one of the few times I actually refer to Lineage 2. Usually I just say no but since you are coming with someone else (especially your wive so timings should be fine), then the game is a lot more enjoyable. It is a grind game but I never even cared about the grind when I played with my RL friends.

Edit: Just saw your other post about not having loads of time to dedicate. Lineage 2 may take a long time if you are looking for content that L2 is aimed for like castle sieging, etc. but if you are looking to just progress through the game and have some enjoyment along the way without caring about the grind then it is a nice enjoyment. Especially try adventuring to new places in game since there are quite a few places to level and a nice change of pace finding new sights to level at.

Another game that could be nice is Guild Wars since it is mainly going in groups and everything else in instanced.

Maybe FFXI?  It really is a great game, and a duo team would be very good for leveling.  The game has a ton of content, and the only real reason people don't play is because they hate waiting for hours for a party.  However, there are jobs that would duo well together, and you wouldn't need to waste time looking for a group.

I'd still be playing FFXI, but Vista doesn't seem to like it

I think you should check out Tabula Rasa. I must confess that I haven't played it since beta, but they way it was back then, it was good for duo play. It won't likely keep your intrest forever, but if you like its unique game mechanic, you'll end up having blast for a while.

And if neither of you has so far tested it, try out WoW. It may not be ideal game for duo play, but it's not the most popular game for nothing. Plus, there is a free trial.

You might also want to test Vanguard once SOE gets the free trial out. But I wouldn't recommend buying it without testing.

City of Heroes might be a good one.  You can be her hero, and she yours.

Plus, she can go crazy with the costumes (girls tend to love that sort of thing).

While you could duo very well in EQ i would not start playing EQ now. I love the game but it is a ghost town at low levels and you are right, the graphics are very dated.

Wow could be the best choice. I dont love the game but it was fun for awhile. A set duo would do very well in the game since you can pretty much solo most of it. Max level gives you the PVP or raiding grind though. It should give you some fun for awhile though, and some people actually like the end game.

Lineage 2 i only played a little but it might work for you too. Graphics are still some of the best i think. When i played there were very few options for character appearance but that may have changed.

Vanguard is an option but it is a huge computer hog, you really need a good computer to play it well. It also is pretty low population and there are still a number of problems with the game. It is improving but i would hold off on playing it for awhile still.

I never played Guild Wars but i have been thinking about it. I too have nothing to play right now. Graphics are also quite good on it.

There really arent too many great choices for you. In my opinion the best games that you can still play are all pretty old, meaning they have outdated graphics and the population is not the best. So i would still have to say WoW, as much as it hurts to say that.

I came in here ready to suggest Sword of the New World, but you said you didn't want a free to play MMO.  It fits all of the other criteria, and is a genuinely great game, but if you're sure...

I would suggest either Tabula Rasa or City of Heroes.  I've logged a good deal of time on CoH and I can tell you personally that the character creator is top-notch, and the community tends to be very helpful.

He asked for a game that isn't an Asian grind fest, and this one is the Mother of all Asian grinds. He also asks for a quest driven game, and Lineage is hardly that. So I wouldn't recommend it all.

I would go with some other posters, and recommend Guildwars. I believe you can get a trial for it at Fileplanet.

I played Vanguard for around 4 months.  Like another post stated you need a decent rig to enjoy it properly.  Even though I do not play it now.  I did have a lot of fun teaming up with a friend and completing missions.  However some of the main areas still need a group of 5-6 unless you level past them and then you suffer XP due to killing low level mobs.  Also note a lot of missions are...kill 20 spiders, kill 20 skeletons and one even had kill 100!!  Overall though its a very good looking game and it was fun for a while.  Lack of players can be an issue as well.

If you are looking to break away from fantasy try the 3 day trial of Tabula Rasa.  2 people could play for most of the game.  I would also recommend EVE Online but its so different it may not be your thing.  However 2 people could really have fun in it.  Its built for 1 player - 500 person corp level so unlike Vanguard you won't be steered towards group only missions.

    Hope this helps.
