I'm just here to show some support for AC2. I played the game at release and leveled up to 48 before quiting. Sure, the game lacked a lot of things back then. When I went back it felt like an entirely different game. Those that are interested in passing the time waiting for another game, or if you are just looking for something new, then do youself a favor and check AC2 out.
There is still some work to be done with the Turbine deal, but the game still has plenty of potential. I think the reason the populations are low for now is because of the lack of marketing which Turbine is currently working on.
The game has the best quest system around by far... the graphics and sound are outstanding. I've played them all from the beginning and its hard for them to compete with certain aspects of AC2.
I know I'll get a lot of flames about classes unbalanced, nerfs, lack of super high level content (which is changing), yada yada ya... There certainly has been some of all of this, which is another reason the population has taken a hit. When i started I had a feral intendant... I was a god. Well, they nerfed me, and made the mobs I use to fight harder. It kind of pissed me off and I quit. Now that I'm back, I'm still a feral intendant, and I think I'm still pretty powerful. Turbine is working hard at fixing these issues and actually listens to their players... just check out the forums. http://forums.ac2.turbinegames.com/index.php
Flames welcome, as well as other opinions!

I've been playing the free 15 day trial for about a week. I like AC2 and I may even buy it when the 15 days are up. I think it's fun, relatively stable, and different enough from the others I played to make it seem new and refreshing.
I really love the quest system. The graphics and sound are nice, possibly the best graphics I have seen. The world seems dynamic and there is a lot going on despite the lack of many players right now.
I hope many people think the same way I do and subscribe to AC2 after their free trial, it could really become a smash if more people would look into it. I never played it before, but I am liking it now, and I am looking forward to what's to come in AC2.
Hrm... well i've been hearing mostly good things about AC2 so i suppose i'll give the trial a shot
Sounds cool.
Ill try it
.....after my AO AI beta of course
is it true that there is monthly events which change the world?
I'd certainly give the game a try. I played AC1 once and didn't like it too much but from what I hear, AC2 is vastly different.
Yes, if you interested in seeing the changes that have been made each month since release, then you can view the guides here.. http://ac2.turbinegames.com/index.php?page_id=40
I'm currently playing the 15 day trial and there are things I like and things I don't. The graphics are ok but after EVE my standards are very high. The quest system is very advanced but in the end it pretty much comes down to monster bashing and then some more monster bashing. If that's your thing then AC2 is a game for you but I will not subscribe after the trial but will hopefully manage to have some fun while I'm there
The thing that bugs me the most is that on the European servers I can't find anybody that speaks English and on the open channels everyone speaks German. I just hate that. Not much point in playing a MMORPG when you can't interact with anyone. Also in 3 out of 4 times I play I can be online for hours without seeing a living player. The world is half emtpy all the time.

There are quite a few quests that don't require any monster killing at all. One they just added called "message from home" involves some very good jumping skills! It took me 3 hours to complete it where some have completed it in 30 minutes. This quest is probably one of the ones that offers the highest exp that don't require you to kill some mob, but there are still many others. Especially at lower levels.
I think my favorite thing about the game is the spell effects. It really cool to see a flaming bowling ball thing being flung at ya hehe (you'd have to see it).
Thanks
Thanks
What setting are you playing the graphics on? I have mine on medium and they are very good, though they go up to very high I think. I think whether you like the graphics or not is more a matter of taste. I really wasn't overly impressed with EVE graphics because I was doing nothing but staring at space and rocks, and a few ship and spacestation models (don't get me wrong.. some scenes can be very good), where AC2 has hundreds of player and creature models, spell and weapon effects, and changing environments (day/night/rain/snow/etc). Personally, I rate AC2 graphics among the best that I've ever seen. Just wait until you see some of the later landscapes and dungeons.
There is so much more to AC2 than just monster bashing. The quests are intriguing and usually very fun and challenging (not to mention there are tons of them now!). Crafting 2.0 has turned me into a nearly full time crafter because it is so involving and enjoyable.. there are many different USEFUL items you can craft. A low level character can be just as good of a crafter as a high level toon (craft XP is separate and you're really at no disadvantage once you get above lvl 15 or so).
I'm not sure why you're having such a hard time finding other players. Frostfell and Thistledown both have a healthy population. When I want a group, it usually takes me about 5 minutes if one doesn't find me first. Crafting 2.0 has also brought the populations back to the towns so it's easy to meet up and trade with people. I guess the European servers may be a different story, I know the Korean servers stay pretty well populated.
To anyone else considering trying AC2 for the first time or coming back, I would highly recommend it. The game is a gem right now and there are many great things to come.
The free trial also doesn't come with the highres file/files. It does make the graphics look a lot better in my opinion. There was a post today by Ramen from Turbine about making those files available for download, and that was all that was said.
I got into the game cause of the 15day free trial and at the moment loving every minute of it.
I hope it continues to grow.

Promote what you love instead of bashing what you hate.
Don't get me wrong I like a lot in the game and would recomend it but it's not for me personally. Perhaps I just posted what I didn't like and not what I do like.
Also I haven't been playing for long enough to fully get into the game and appreciate it as much as I maybe will in a week or two. Should perhaps hold my posts until then
Haven't done much crafting. Only one sword that I was supposed to build in a mission and one hammer I needed to mine some rocks. I love player driven market systems so if the AC2 crafting system is good and the market player driven then that is one of the biggest qualities a MMORPG game can have. I've never liked games much where everything you buy and sell is from npc players and the prices stay the same for months or the entire game. A fully player driven market gives the option of a whole new career like in EVE where you can be a full time trader for a living. That is a whole new dimension. I don't know how the market system in AC2 is and to tell you the truth I still haven't found where to sell the loot I get, I just throw crap away when my inventory gets full (yeah I'm a n00b)
I agree that the graphics are good and I know what you mean about the graphics in EVE being empty. They are. It's space and space is empty But if you zoom into any item then you'll see the staggering detail and I can sit and stare at my ship for hours on end cause they are soooo perty

hehe... actually to convert items to gold you just drag the item into the little window that shows you how much gold you have or.. when looting you can either click the grab all button or change all button to gold right away. You can also double click an individual item if it is something you want.
I understand what your are saying... I purchased City of Lost Heroes and played for about 3 hours before vowing to never go back to it again.... It just wasn't for me, but some people love it. It'a all about what you like.

I played this game nearly an year (11 months) had 5 chars all other lvl 45+.
I have never felt more insulted and lied at in any over game(played most between UO-COH).
This game had really an good base of design but they managed annoy people so much that at weekend peak time there where max 300 people online per server and during the week 300 was total max over all servers sometimes before they merged servers.
I truely hate AC2 and Turbine for what they did with it. turbine will have to proove an hard time ever getting me back an an customer for any other MMORPG.

HAHA didn't notice that post before Now I know why I couldn't get any gold, it was too simple for me to understand I needed it to be something complicated and not just one button
The tutorial could have mentioned this though. A whole lot missing in that tutorial that would have helped me and made my stay more enjoyable.

i have to agree with the original poster. After trying out a bunch of trials, AC2 was the one i enjoyed the most...i think the game has a lot of things to offer, and i would recommend everyone to at least try out the trial.
I never subscribed after the trial tho, cuz i decided to return to EQ for a bit. What drove me off from AC2 was the small playerbase (actually i feel the EQ community shrinkin atm too) and i didnt seem to ever come to terms with the controls...actually i might try out the trial again anytime soon. This thread made me remember some of the good stuff in the game
AC2 is truely one of the best trials out there

MMORPG made me feel many different ways (e.g. happy, surprised, dissapointed and so on) but only AC2 made feel frauded from start to end (multiple times).
They gave an cold fart to their customers and got the bill.
BTW above post is right do the 14 day trial and make your own opinion but I highly recomend to leave the fingers of it its a waste of precious time.
Dont get me wrong AC2 had some nice features and ideas such as Turbine monthly update or tactician class as such but the way they treated the players starting from release was out right hypocritical .

Those of you who are flaming the game I have just 2 questions.
1) When was the last time you played the game?
2) How long did you play for?
Just by answering these questions it's pretty simple to figure out why someone does not like AC2. Let me just briefly explain some of the history of AC2. I'm not sure exactly when all this stuff happened so I'll just put it in chronologic order, with no certain dates:
December, 2002 - AC2 is released. Content was (as it is with most newly released MMO's) extremely lacking. Quests existed really just through about level 20-25 with gaps. After that point there were just a few quests on Omishan and Linvak, all repeatable. So people would do the same thing over and over again with no variety. All the towns were completely empty. Forges, which were suppose to be used to "rebuild" the towns (?) were pretty much ignored. Conclusion: A pretty big disappointment. Many players left the game within 2 months. I was one of the players that left during this time so my recollection of following events could be inaccurate as far as order and length of time.
Chat system problems - Apparently the chat system went down completely for like 2+ months. Inexcusable for a MMO. Turbines excuse was that the chat software was proprietary to Microsoft so they had no direct control over the system. Eventually they created their own chat system which they implemented into the game. Many more people left during this time.
Hero levels introduced - Level cap raised from 50 to 150. A lot of people came back to try this but many left soon thereafter disappointed that there wasn't enough content to last through 150 levels and most of the leveling consisted of hunting (grinding) in the same places.
Turbine buys the Asherons Call franchise back from Microsoft - They now have complete control over the game. Personally, I think this is the best thing to happen to AC2. Since this time, they have proven that they are dedicated to the game by laying out a solid development plan through next year and even started talks about an upcoming expansion.
Crafting 2.0 released - The crafting system is completely revamped. You now have whats called Crafting XP (CXP). Once you reach a sufficient level where you aren't going to die every time you try to mine (15+) you could actually become a full time crafter. The system is very good. Nobody will be able to master crafting everything so everyone has an opportunity to find their niche in the new economy.
From release until now - Turbine has released patches every month that introduce new content and tweaks. There really is a lot of content now. There are quests galore, mounts, lots of varied creatures and loot.. just tons of things to do. I've heard that the game from levels 40+ is where most of the content is now. I'm not there yet because I take the game slow and I do craft probably 90% of the time, but I am absolutely sure I will never run out of things to do.
Anyways, back to my original point..
1) When was the last time you played the game?
There has been so many changes over time that somebody who played the game 3+ months ago can not and SHOULD NOT speak for the game today. It is not the same game. It is 100 times better than it was upon release and it gets much better every month with each upcoming patch. I didn't even mention how much better Aura buffs (released a few days ago) have made the game.
Obviously AC2 has had troubled times in the past, and there are a lot of folks who are bitter because they played (and paid) through those times. I don't make excuses for Turbines mistakes, but I do stand behind the fact that those troubles are in the past and we will never see the likes of them again.
2) How long did you play for?
This question can be answered two ways for those who do not like the game.
- You played the game through the trouble times (chat problems, no content, etc). A lot of people who played through these times are still bitter today, even though they still may play AC2. If you're one of those people, please take a break from the game and try again with a fresh take 6 months or later down the road. I promise you won't regret it.
- You played the game a very short time (hint: 15 day trial) and don't think theres much to the game. AC2 is, by design, simple to play and learn, probably the simplest RPG to date (in the beginning - it gets much more complicated as you advance). There isn't much to character creation, you just pick a race (no class). As you advance through the levels, things become more complex. At first you can pick from just melee/missile/magic trees. After level 15, you can start branching into specializations. Each tree has 2 specializations, making a total of 18 unique classes (6 for each race). If you don't play through at least level 20, you never get a chance to learn how characters become unique over time.
The first levels are also pretty much a walkthrough with quests. The game may feel linear. This is also by design to give you a feel for the game and lore behind it. Let me assure you, AC2 is not linear. You can branch off in many directions and do many different things. The linear vault quests are always there to do as you please and they do provide a linear story line, but you are never forced to do these.
Basically, all I'm saying is don't sell the game short before you get a chance to really learn it, and try to understand why so many people are bitter at the game. I get their point of view and hope that they can distance themselves away from AC2 enough that maybe someday they will give it a fresh look. It really is a very good game now.
Hmmm, here every single MMORPG that I have played has been a hunting grind, quest grind.... Not sure what you mean by grinding ore..... mining maybe??
Anyways... You sound very bitter and I'm not sure what AC2 did to you that you feel so bitter about... afterall it IS a game that YOU chose to play... Easy solution if you feel a game isn't for you... Dont play it.
I actually enjoy AC2, as I enjoy many other MMORPG's. Crafting 2.0 has kept me busy and the new hunting areas are also a lot of fun to put my chars to the limit.
Best advice. Download the 15day trial, hook up with an allegiance and make the decision for yourself. Heck, I made 3 trial accounts before I finally decided to purchase...

AC2 was released at the very end of 2002.... back in November 2002. Right before the start of 2003.
It had roughly 50,000 accounts during its first 4 months of release. Right now, over 1 1/2 years after release it has roughly 6,000 accounts.
IMHO if the AC2 game DEVs, and fans are super-serious about wanting to see AC2 turned around then they should have AC2 put IN the one game feature it was suppose to have at release:
1. NPCs coming in and destroying towns. And players being able to defend those towns. AND rebuild those towns.
2. Of course Turbine will finally have to make it so players can at least go into all the town buildings at minimum. And/or allow players to make uses for the town buildings too.

I don't know why you have to continuously quote the numbers playing the game.I think most people know it hasn't got a massive player base.I mean you must have quoted it in thse forums already about 20 times.
They have made a lot of improvements to AC2 though and well its just getting better and better.Thats the point that people are trying to get across.
I came to AC2 from AC1 and i can say that i emphatically enjoy AC2 more. The fact that buff bots have been virtually made redundant in AC2 puts it way ahead of AC1 in my book.
Yes the numbers aren't anywhere what they should be and i think thats what some people are trying to say--the numbers aren't anywhere where they should be!.Its a lot better game now than on its release and my personal opinion is its as good as you get at the moment.
I am happy with the game for the most part and there are some things that annoy me too.I would recommend anyone to trial it though it stands up well with anything out there as of this moment.
