warhammer world map

Anyone know where a really good warhammer world map is? I remember there was a really nice interactive one I found a long time ago, but I don't remember where it was.

Bollocks!

    It sure looks like Earth

They even gave the name "Land of death" to what could have been Middle East on the real Atlas

Wow, talk about a total lack of imagination on WAR's part.  That map is way too much like Earth.  Hell, they even didn't take the time to change some of the names!  "Albion" for the UK?   That's a real (albeit) old name in Earth's history books.  Same with "Cathay" for China.  "Araby" for the North African Arab world?  *sigh*  Lack of imagination for the lose.

First of all i don't know the WAR lore, but I know pretty sure that Mythic didn't came up with the names, but they just took the names that were written in the lore.

Has nothing to do with Mythic's lack of imagination.

It's based on Warhammer lore from Games Workshop -- a lore which has pleased many, many thousands of players for over two decades.

I'm not a WoW'er, I'm a UO'er.  But that WoW map at least is imaginative.  SO is UO's map.

And why are you all rushing to defend Mythic?   I'm not attacking Mythic.  I'm attacking whoever was dull enough to create that WAR map.  Jeez, the WAR fanbois are already out on the attack.  I'll paraphrase Hamlet when he said: "Methinks the lady doth protest too much."

How much difference will it make if the map looked totally different? In my opinion, none. Sure it's lack of imagination, but I always find it enjoying when you can see references to the real world, and the things you mentioned (Cathay=china etc) makes it much funnier and imaginative in my opinion.

I'd like to see the real map, the forementioned realistic one is the idealistic one but not the real map that has been set in real zones into WAR. I'd like to see the zones together to see the true and real map of WAR, im pretty sure is a little and cubic, linear one; if you see the zones that has been published as zone maps and you try to solve the puzzle you get that impression.

It is a question of fangs.

I’m rather surprised at the negative, even hostile, reactions towards the Warhammer Fantasy world map (so much so that I came out of lurking and posted).

I personally was pleasantly surprised when I saw that the world was an based of our own, and it immediately made it more interesting, immersive and valid for me. I could relate and thus roughly judge scale, which made it, and the battles from the Lore, more epic.

I rather enjoyed seeing the alternate names used for areas linking them to the areas that resemble in our world, as well as the complexity and detail that comes with it. The similarities also strengthen the “Old World” feel of the whole thing, as well as cement the concept and portrayal of the human society within the IP, being similar to mid-renaissance Germany. The whole look is reminiscent of ancient world maps where continents were obscured with odd landmass construction, which again, adds to the whole feel.

As a result, I’d have to disagree that this map design is a product of lacking imagination. After all, as much work can go into changing something as creating something, if its done well.

At least, in my humble opinion.

    EDIT:

war-rvr.net used to have a pretty impressive world map, including all the racial zones and majour realms from WAR. Unfortunately its been down for some time as they update it, and will be back up some undetermined time it the future.

I found the idea quite cool to make it a kind of paralell dimension to our world.

I think it was really creative reflecting the game off the old world before it was formed into the new world. The game is based on the old times they did a good job sticking to that root. Plus I couldn't help but to laugh when they called the Middle East  The Dark Lands.

It's not though where England is on that map is where the empire live.

For many, many years the Warhammer world has looked alot like our world. The Empire being based aorund the Germany of our time, Brettonia based around France, The Lizardmen area being the 'New World', Ulthuan being Atlantis.

It isn't a lack of imagination, it's games-workshop knowing that people can relate more to things they understand.  Same reason people usually play human more so then dwarfs of other not-so-human races. People can say 'Yeah, I always did like the French names, and they are 90% knights on the battlefield to boot' or 'So that's how they explain the city of Atlantis disappearing under the ocean!'.

Also, since the Warhammer world was crafted to look like how it does by the race known as the Slann. Before hand the planet was ravaged by Warp storms, sun baked, and almost completely unlivable, but the slann moved the planet's orbit, shifted the land masses around, and created some races(as well as brought some new one to the planet(Lizardmen were former servants of the Slann, and the High Elves were a race created by the Slann in order to assist in the magical endeavors.

Because of that, and because GW wants it to remain a mystery, no one knows if the Slann was supposed to do the same to our planet, if we're in the same galaxy at all, what time period the Warhammer world is at compared to our own, ect.

I have no problem with WAR map resembling our planet, the world looks like that in the lore (created more then two decades ago) and the game just follows that. I would have more of a problem if Mythic made it look different just to satisfy today's trends.

Today we think and do things different, so the new universes created have the benefit of being created more to liking of modern thinking - that is why WoW map looks like it does for example. Besides how the global map looks has to be last factor that will decide if the game is good mmorpg or not... at least for me.

Also, look at this map of Hyboria (AoC universe) and say that it does not remind you of parts of our world: http://hyboria.xoth.net/maps/vd_hyborian_age_full.jpg
