Im gonna give EVE a shot ...which is ironic considering...

EnigmaEnigma Member UncommonPosts: 11,384

My Wife has been employed under Polaris for 5 months now and I never gave EVE a shot lol.  She plays it all the time and swears by the game.

I told her I'll try EVE out for her lol.  I have to admit though...I love hearing the soundtrack when she plays and the game is nice looking.  She's been playing it since release so what the heck lol.

See you guys inside

Ships are crafted by players (I'll come back to this) there is also (or at least was at release) an NPC stock of most items

Crafting in Eve isnt something you cant really do from the outset, the blueprints cost many many times the price of the actual ship (assuming you buy an original blue print) and you then need to locate a factory slot (which you rent) and the materials needed to make the ship (I have built the lowest frigate in the game and even that requires an expensive material - one a newbie wont have the money to buy or the equipment/skills to mine themselves)

You can get a copy of a blueprint (you have to buy this from another player) which reduces the blueprint cost but only allows you to make a set number of items before the print becomes useless

Obviously once you've built the item you then need to hope someone buys it (and, if supply is ample you'll need to undercut to get it to sell, but you'll need to work out how cheap you can sell before you make a loss on it)

Faction standing do effect how NPC entities react to you, above this your overall security rating determines if the police attack you or just follow you around (making sure you behave)

The newbie zones are still full of players (partly due to MMORPG.com's 14 day trial atm) so meeting people and getting help isnt a problem - IMO there isnt any RP in Eve though (but at least CCP call Eve a MMOG rather than MMORPG) so if youre looking for immersion you wont find it here

You _can_ solo as long as you dont bite off more than you can chew this will limit, ultimately, what you can do in the game but as long as youre ok with this then you wont have a problem.

    -edit-

Given your angle on bugs in SWG (just been looking over some of your SWG posts) its probably worth pointing out that (IMO) I've encountered more problems with bugs etc in Eve than I did in SWG

    Thanx 5150

The bug issue doesn't really bother me (although you prolly think otherwise from SWG posts) Also rp isn't my thing....have enough of real life dramas without creating them in a game image

I just like a game to be playable and fun. I imagine EVE to be a solitary game (i can't imagine same people grouping day after day as in Daoc or EQ)???

Can the diferent races interact with eachother? Can a caldari (or however it's spelt) belong to the same association as an amarr or are they banned from socialising ala hib versus alb in daoc??

I remember playing a game called x-beyond the frontier once...the visuals and music made a very atmospheric game....i imagine EVE to be like that..am i right??

Sorry about all the questions but i'm really interested in EVE. My interest in SWG is on the wane and EVE seems interesting

If you have anymore advice or tips keep them coming

Actually I just happen to read the SWG boards as well and noticed Pans posts there!

Teams (or gangs as Eve calls them) are generally pick-up affairs (several of you will be at a known spawn or asteroid belt and you will just agree to team up) you need to be careful though because gang members can warp to other members locations and this has been used to gank newbies (Eve has 100% open PvP, although the police will get involved in the high security sectors......but you might be dead by then)

Coporations (Eve guilds) can be multi-race _if_ the corp leader has the correct skills (also the total number of members is determined by the leaders skills) however you need to bear in mind that your race determines where you start in the galaxy (so the other races might be several sectors away) and corporation also have faction rating with NPC entities (so corp members could get the corp into trouble with NPC's or other player corps (declared corp wars suspend all police intervention so the gloves really do come off!)

You could wait for the online version of X-Beyond the frontier to come out :-) (I'm afraid its quite a way off)

Have you considered getting the MMORPG.com 14 day free trial of Eve? (no credit card required)

If you liked X-BTF then you will like EVE as well, very similar game mechanics. The only caveat wrt this comparison is that X-BTF allows you to pilot your ship in a FPS style context while EVE takes a tactical Homeworld style approach.

Too bad, EVE would be ultra-uber if it allowed for more twitch factor - but then its pretty darn good despite this.

Depending on the size of the corp you are in you can group with the same peeps everyday. Most of the people mine in my corp so they do group alot to help each other out.

And yes other races interact quite a bit in the game. The only thing would be faction and that just effects whether you can dock at a station. It has no bearing on how other PC's interact. We have all 4 races in the corp I'm in.

I would agree with - try the 14 day trial account, courtesy of mmorpg.com and join a corporation when you're new.

I played the 14 day trial and fell in love with EVE. You really have nothing to loose but the time you played if you decide not to play anymore. There are some glitches in the game that can any you. Just realize this and relog in or wait 24 hours for the server maintenance that occurs everyday. My friend had his account no logging in for 24 hours, I toild him to wait until the next day and poof it worked again. He tried making a second character on the same account, but when it made it said he couldn't train the skills due to the other character was training =).

I see Panache wants to be a solitaire player, and that is definately possible. I would highly suggest joining a corporation that boasts member free will. Those corporations who have you group mine only benefit those who are new. For example a high end frigate can have 2 turret spots, good for 2 mining lasers (whatever laser). But suppose a friend mining with you has a battleship with 8 turret spots good with 8 mining laser. How is the battleship profiting by splitting the ore with the frigate member? Well then comes complex division and possible arguements. The corporation I joined mines together no matter what ship you have, and still divides equally all ore amongst the members mining- and this is my point to joining a corporation who is out to help you. Not only might a battleship have 8 mining lasers vs the frigates 2, but the player may have higher skills to mine more efficiently or refine better to make minerals that may sell higher than just ore.

Eve is very complex and I wish I had more time to write about. I have been playing for 2 weeks only, but have learned so much.

I'm very much a social gamer...but SWG's "solo group" nature of play has made me very nervous of trying new mmorpg's. I would hate to join another community like what is found on SWG. I enjoy a friendly natter and a bit of banter image  Even in the 3 guilds i was in, in SWG i always felt i was alone with all the afk'ing and macroing that was going on image

Then I think you'll like EVE, Panache =). I didn't mean to single you out, just to help you =). My corporation I belong to constantly answers questions and helps me while I play. Of course I talk more than any of the veteran players, maybe because they are busy advancing while I keep talking lolz. I am mostly on my own, training skills, doing agent missions, while all the while talking to my friends while I can.

    Cheers Zst

As you can see i'm a little bit nervous after SWG....and i find the possibilty of finding a worthwhile community hard to believe. In SWG it was apply on the pa's forum, wait to be contacted for an interview, attend said interview, group with the pa to see if you were acceptable.... not friendly at all in my opinion.....in  my daoc guild, if were cool and knew how to have a laugh you were in image.

I'm not a powergamer, just like to adventure and have a natter to people from around the world image.

Keep the insights to EVE coming image

Seems to me like you didn't hang out with the right crowd on SWG. I was 2nd in command of the largest PvP PA on Gorath and we had a blast all the time :)

But I do see what you mean.

Everyone does seem very friendly on EVE, though I have yet to try joining a Corporation. (I prefer to know at least SOME things about the game before doing that).

I'm new to EVE so I'm not too far in, but if what the others are saying is true, then you probably won't encounter very many bugs until further in the game. With SWG I didn't really meet any really annoying/ihatethisgame bugs until around Master Bounty Hunter, *I'm* worried it'll be the same here. Guess we'll see.

They do have a new expansion coming out that's suppose to improve the UI and stuff, so I can't wait for that! :) :) (That being my only gripe right now).

Hope to see you in the game!

Eve can work both as a solo game and as group played game.  it is far easier as a group, and far more fun in my humble opinion.

Solo players should keep in mind that the games economy is player driven, so even if your going solo your gona want to make friends.  if you want to have all bases covered research/production/refining/pvp/agents etc.. your gona need friends to cover off what you are weak in. (or if not friends - then reliable business contacts)  after a while you might come to realise that it would just work best if you join a like minded corp and benifit from the divertsity of skills and interests people have.

corps come in all shapes and sizes and timezones.  be careful to check them all out to find the best fit for you.  Eve being what it is, attracts alot of mature gamers, who dont mind the slower paced game (slower than an fps that is) and as such has the best community ive come accross in my time in online games. (course im biased). the game itself is alot of fun, but working as a group, especialy in deep 0.0 security space, is so thrillin and rewarding i almost wet my pants thinking about it.

alliance wars are where the fun is to be had, imho. Although i love industry and such, working with 20-30 others against various types of player enemies is way too much fun.  and finaly the game is coming to a place where pilots of all capabilities can work together to fight a common enemy, and not just for Battleship pilots.

i would suggest solo for 2-3 weeks of play then spend 2 weeks looking into corps seriously.  A good corp wont let you in right away, as they tend to be picky.  and if youve played mmo enough you will want a corp that wont just let the riff raff in, youll want a corp of solid gamers who treat each other well and help each other out whenever they can.

    /end ramble

A corp can be a solo experience, and can also be a group experience.  It depends what you want to go for.  All races can interact with each other.  While RP wise Amarr and Minmatar are virtually at war with one another, PC's don't care.  Player created corps can have any type of player in it, only the corp leader's skills in corporation management define how large his corp can be.  The graphics in EVE are great.  If you like grouping with a large number of other players, some corporations have joined together into alliances (made up of 20+ corps) and claimed entire sections of the EVE universe.  These alliances are frequently at war with one another, and the battles that they have frequently number 20+ ships on each side (very epic to watch).  On the other hand, there are a ton of solo miners and npc hunters, who are just as happy.
