For those that can read, there will be an open beta close to launch..it will require some sort of registration however.

    And you made it smarter????

Any Beta that requires an application and where not everyone who applies is let in, is by current definitions not an OPEN beta.... anyone claiming so is a sophist!

    Are you a sophist?

If we want to get technical here and throw out "sophist", you might want to read where i said an open beta of *SORTS*.

I again question your reading/comprehension skills sir!

All betas need you to register.

  • Oh, how it sucks that being such things like an idiot or an asshole take no skill...

Thanks for the post, though I'm not sure if you are the first to post the news.  Glad Funcom isn't allowing leechers or people just wanting to trial the game in as easily.

I read fine... your post was one big apology to the fact the beta is not really open... calling it "sorts" (without putting it in quotation marks even) does not make it anything less of an apology...

    There is no open beta!

Maybe a large or even huge closed beta.... but real open beta? no! That IS a fact!

Current definitions? And who is the enshrined demagogue making the definition? Has Webster come to us with such a definition?

Perhaps the antiquated definition of "Open Beta" is what  you meant? Because definitions can change. For example. Perhaps AoC expects 9 million players to join Open Beta. Should they purchase all those servers, hire all the staff just so you can have your so-called 'proper' definition of Open Beta? No.

An Open Beta is open to the public, within limits. There, I've redefined it.

Current definitions? well look at other mmos... when is an open beta closed for some and open for some? an application proces? Isnt that just the closed beta all over (or for the first time, for real!!)..?

Since AoC needs to hire the server a couple of weeks after beta anyways, open beta might be the time to test them? Isnt that what they normally do?

A valiant effort Cerion, however it is obvious that he is of the "glass half empty" camp. A typical forum troll at best. I'm glad the rest of you are excited about the news, it is a good sign for AoC, and it's followers.

I look forward to seeing the rest of you in the *open* beta.

Draccan, my forum troll friend of the "classic definition" sort. I am neither upset, nor crying. I accept your opinion of what an open beta is and kindly disagree. It appears that everyone else in this thread does as well.

To avoid further argument (because you're obviously getting a little heated), I will ignore your further posts. Again, I posted for the benefit of the AoC fans who are excited about this open beta. Enjoy guys!

    http://webtrends.about.com/od/glossary/g/beta_define.htm

"an open beta has either an unlimited number of spots (i.e. anyone who wants to can participate) or a very large number of spots in cases where opening it up to everyone is impractical"

If you need more just ask or you could look it up yourself.  They are stress testing the servers, if you want to play for free I can show you a few free games.  I understand some people just want free things, maybe you can get a friend trial key, it's for people who like to try things first.  I realize you need a friend and maybe you don't have one but ask on the forums I'm sure someone will pitty you.

The problem with your definition of Open Beta is that it's antiquated. Yes, back in the late 1990's, early 2000's a company could throw the doors wide open and allow anyone to check out their Open Beta. And all of a few tens of thousands of players would show up -- you know, back when having dial-up was considered cutting edge?

But in today's world of high access to the internet, and MMOs gaining more press, one cannot reasonably expect a developer to open their Beta doors wide. The simple fact that a potential of 10 million players could flood your free game should make the reason obvious why they can't.  LOTRO offered an Open Beta, and most anyone who registered got in.  But I guarantee if a miraculous surge of millions of players descended on the LOTRO Open Beta, Turbine would have limited access.

My guess is that when AoC offers its Open Beta, it will be similar to LOTROs. Most who register will get in.

Who the hell cares what the AoC-haters call it? You can call it Secret-private-only4FuncomLovers-Beta for all I care. Point is everybody that wants in will get a spot with a little effort. If that means in your definition that Funcom is liars and it's not a real open-beta who cares? Really, who cares?

Let them rave. Nothing will make them stop anyway.
