Well I picked up pirates of the burning sea pre order box from gamestop. And started to look for a good guild that would be active and noticed some major guilds from prior mmorpgs and believe me, they look pretty much into potbs. I am going to assume this game has potential..
I just started playing yesterday, so I am the biggest newbie. Anyways, I am going to give a whack at this game and see if I like it before commiting to a guild. It looks like alot of hardcore guilds will be hitting this game, so something must be up.

I would check in national chat in game or on the potbs forums, you'll probably have better luck finding a good guild. It might also be a good idea to check out one with beta experience, if you can find one on your server that is.
Personally I think this game is gonna be like EVE, start slow, and then take off as people realise it has way way more depth than they thought it had when they tried it in beta. That or the WoW kiddies will end the world by unleashing barrens chat anitmatter....
I hate stupid people.
Thank you, going check it out before I hit the sack.

And as stated to the OP, check out the official forums, you will have alot of luck their also.
I know its premature to say, but I gonna side with you on this StoneJackal about this game taking off. I still play Eve Online and noticed alot of the people from that game, just trying PotBS out.
To change the subject slightly..
My guild has already been establishing alliances and we have immpressive numbers participating just in our guild.
Our server alone we got a few popular guilds like Redemption, Death and Taxes, Old Timers Guild and Sturmgrenadier. We are now starting to reconize who is sailing for the other Factions and it looks like its definetly going to be interesting on launch day. Most of these guilds are hardcore according to their websites.
At this moment, we have alot of PvP flaggers on our server, but I going to assume this will change once the game is released and everyone has to push to level cap.
And to wrap things up..
We shall know by the release of AoC if PotBS can keeps its #s up. But then again, PotBS and AoC are totally different games with both having PvP content that big guilds are attractive too. And we still have plenty of time till AoC is released.
there are also us large casual guilds who will be playing the game
