Has anyone tried the online download purchase?

I'm considering this; because EB sell it off the shelves for AU$70, SOE offers it for AU$53 online.

Here's the problem; when I downloaded the EQ2 trial it installed the small patcher and then downloaded the whole game via the patcher. This took 3-4 overnight download sessions. (Probably due to my location; Australia)

And VG is much, much bigger than EQ2 from what I hear, so if it's the same process it would probably take up my entire 30-day free period!

Thoughts?

I do not recommend buying the online download if you dont have a very very fast connection. Myself I have a 16MB connection and used well above 24 hours downloading the entire thing. After that came 4-5 hours patching.

You can imagine this on a slow connection. It would take you many days to download and patch this monster

I bought it from D2D and the file was about 6GB so only took me about a hour to download.

Once you've got the game up and running, you should consider jumping on the Seradon server, unofficial Australian server. Theres plenty of us Aussies around and a couple of good quality Aussie raiding guilds that are active and full of good folks.

And yeh, save yourself the headache, buy the discs

Got mine from D2D as well...no issues here.  With the download and then the patching it was done in about 2.5 hours.

So you downloaded the 20 Gigabytes AND the patch in 2.5 hours......... What internet connection do you have or are you on the same Local Area Network as the servers maybe...

I remember when downloading the beta at fileplanet a year ago, the 18GB was compressed to several files, which together was about 6GB. I am guessing that you still download the same file(s) at D2D or others.

even 20GB in 2.5 hours is pretty ok ... around 3MBit/s? (don't think you patch 12GB, but it is much though)

Ok didnt know about the Fileplanet download. What I was thinking about was the Game downloader itself, which is a death trap. You will die of old age using it!

yeah, that's for sure ... some days it goes very smoothly and other days it takes for ever, and you have to cancel and do it over again ... I hope the new station launcher helps (talking of which, don't use the beta for Vanguard, it doesn't seem to be in sync, and you cannot start the game)

Or there's this way- I imagine it's the same client download as D2D. Cheaper, though.
