EVE Online is incredible, make no mistake about it.
But I am loking for games OTHER than EVE. I know all about SWG/JTL and I know all about other Sci Fi games like MxO and AO.
I am looking for a game that has the lush space enviroment of EVE, a decent enough population, and is obviously sci fi.
In a perfect world it would have space sim/control AND avatar chars, thouhg i dont believe that type of game exsists (plz dont say SWG).
Thanks!

Unfortunately, like you, I really wish that another decent sci-fi MMORPG would be released; however, aside from the newly released Tabula Rasa, you won't find much. TR is a very shallow game in comparison to EVE or the pre-CU version of SWG, which is why I refuse to play it. It has decent graphics, however, and the quest system is fun in my opinion.
You'll need a decent video card to experience TR in all of its visual glory though.
I hate EVE but I have to agree that its the only high-budget space mmo. Star Trek Online will be the next space mmo but thats at the start of its pipeline.

Maybe watch for Jumpgate Evolution? It seems like what you may want, although I have to admit I never played the original Jumpgate game so my opinion is merely based on board posts and the game's website.
It'll be a while before it's out, but I will probably give it a try. I have been looking for a good sci-fi MMORPG with ship-to-ship combat with a flight sim style.
I have thought of returning to SWG/JTL to try it out again, but then I remember the endless dogfights where all I did was make loop after loop trying to get in behind a tie fighter while his wing mates pounded on me from all sides. I played solo >90% of the time so that got boring, frustrating, and not fun after a while to say the least. I'd perhaps like it better if I grouped and just had one task at a time to worry about like ship repair or gunner, but I've always been more of a solo player for quests and stuff.
I might like a game with a mix of EVE (even though again I haven't tried it, but just based on what people describe the combat as being like) and JTL or Jumpgate features though. A mix of real time tactics and turn based strategy with alot of solo-ability. Dunno how'd you do that, but that is what I want. Top notch ship customization is a must have too.
Anyways, enough rambling. Good luck on your search!

No, in light of the recent information of STO being yanked from P2, I doubt we'll see it any time this decade. Your best bet is either Jump Gate Evolution, Stargate Worlds and one or two more that aren't coming to mind.

Jumpgate Evolution is looking promising, but still a ways off. This one looks to be closest to the EVE model of any others I have heard of in development. I haven't played the original Jumpgate, so I couldn't properly comment on that game.
Fallen Earth looks good so far. It has had a very slow development cycle and I wonder if it has the funding behind it to be successful. It's a great idea for a game.
Star Trek Online is one I had high hopes for. There have been several problems involving the developer in recent months which gives me pause on the success of that game. It will certainly be a battle royal between the fanboys and haters when it gets released. I hope it all works out and becomes a fun game to play.
There are a handful of sci-fi themed games out there currently, but EVE pretty much has a monopoly on the high-end type of "space style" MMO right now. Most of the sci-fi-themed MMOs are either low quality or fantasy-style games with sci-fi textures. There have been multiple attempts and false starts at getting these games into the market. There is also a high failure rate unfortunately.
Has anyone had anything to do with the beta for Taikodom?
