I am very disappointed how they are trying to manipulate the term open beta by claiming giving more beta invites to forum veterans and contestant winners is some how "open beta". It is not and I am B.S that they think us so stupid do believe their crap. Folks this is simply going to be a large closed beta. I am getting more and more disappointed as the time for release nears with the antics they are giving us.
Will the NDA even be lifted before it goes live?
If this will be a solid good product why not making it open beta for 1 week or a weekend. Show pride in their work and word of mouth is going to help sales.
I keep thinking that they are trying to hide things and quit frankly I am not sure if I should even pre order.

Ever stop to think that it's possibly set up like that due to the fact that this is a mature rated MMORPG with nude and violent content? Also whose to say the NDA wont be lifted during the time of the open beta?

Open beta has NEVER meant free for all Trial session before a game goes live. Its just the most common way that developers 'open beta'd' a game before it went live. As long as the NDA is lifted its considered 'open' beta even if you have to belong to a particular sight in order to get a beta key.
If your not subscribed to one of the most commentregistration required sites (like File Planet) for beta's then go subscribe or wait for a list of all the sites that'll be part of the registration required Open Beta (come on if your interested in AoC your most definitly a veteran newsletter subscriber and pretty much gaurentee'd some form of play if they're going by registration).
Otherwise just sit back and wait for the NDA to be lifted for the reviews to pour in(there has never been a game in the history of MMO's that didn't lift their NDA atleast a week to two weeks before Launch, any game that does this is basically pouring their blood into the water for sharks).

You shouldn't pre-order. You shouldn't even play the game. In fact, you should stop with MMOs all together. Wait, why stop there, forget the Internet. It's a waste of your mental capabilities and obvious other talents.

Claiming there will be an OB would be a blatant lie, so the OP is right, I don't understand why they call it Open beta, guess its a bit more commercial than large closed beta~
Anyways, let's see what avery comes with, tho im not really sure about him not being biased at this time, hard to be objective when you put too much effort.

I agree with their decision. People treat open beta just as a free trial when the game is not ready yet. This is one game where I don't care about open beta. I will just wait for the game after all the testers work the bugs out. That way it will be fresh and new when I enter it.
Betas are never the same anyway as you can't play with your Guild or group of friends.
LOL! most of the time when an mmo will launch soon (usually within 1 year) they send out an open beta announcement..............
These "open betas" are nothing more than survey or gauging attempt to fing out how many ppl are intrested in playing the game!

I always thought "open" meant open to testers who are not just employees, family, and friends.
You don't sound like you really want to test the game. That's what beta is for, not free play. They said this week open beta will be tens of thousands of people.
I can agree with the OP that at some point the NDA should be lifted to give fans access to testers' comments.
Open beta just means that there is no NDA. You can post everything you hate/like about the game.
As already said on this link I think there will be an open beta, what it says is that instead of be keys for everyone (like a free mmorpg) there will be keys to only for people they need to test and report bugs.
If they put up one server for beta, instead the x servers of the release, its normal that there are not keys for everyone! its an open beta until there is no more space on it on servs. Think noone said that you will not get a key if you are not veteran, or you need to enter a contest...
Sincerely, this seems to be a "moment of fury", chill out, dont get angry, and wait for the beta, then, if there are only few keys that can you get by contest, complain, but, dont say things that you (us) already dont know.
Almost all major MMOS have had Open beta meaning that anyone can download a key and play. So, please dont try to bullshit us with just free mmo's do that, that is simple not true. Anyone who claims this is normal behavior for a major developed mmo is ignorant, Wow, vanguard, Lotro,. POBTS, Tabula Rista, Ect.... All had Real Open Beta's not large final closed betas.
We know from all other age sensetive sites (porno ect) on the web that you just have to do an age confermation thingy why not put that in the beta download box before the download. Its not because of the M rating.

As said before. dont talk about "things" you just dont really know. Wait for the Open Beta release and then, if its not an open beta; complain. Still dont understand the problem; is that you have to register? cause is the only think they said. Is that they said that there will be not as easy as click a download cause they wanna know how many of us are in the servers? do you understand that is a TEST ? and, suposing as you, did you think that perhas they want to do an open beta but with only one server and cant afford too many people? What you want? do a closed one? only by contest? only friends?

And how do you know they aren't going to allow pre orders into beta? Maybe that will happen next month. Maybe that will happen in March. You don't know, so stop talking like you do.
Bottom line is you're upset because you haven't gotten into beta. And apparently sucking on your thumb and stomping your feet hasn't been very effective so you decided to post here.
Hmmm, a restricted beta protected by NDA...............
