Yeah you can be a character of african descent. I hope this applies to Aquilonians too though since they're based off the Romans and there were African Romans...but so far I've only seen black Stygians.

Also there are some predominant black characters such as Kalanthes. He doesn't fall into some of the stereotypical attributes Howard portrayed such as the huge, puffy-lipped, muscle-bound, simpletons in stories such as "Queen of the Black Coast"....so even lore-wise you'll be able to be versatile. I would like to play a black toon, but stygs can't be soldiers and I was really looking forward to Dark Templar...but then there's always Assassins. I don't think the question is ridiculous I wondered the same thing myself for the longest time, since games such as LOTRO don't allow you to do such.
Well you've gotta see it from their perspective too, since it's not a problem they really need to worry about. Though I'm sure if one was forced to make a hispanic or asian (and nothing else), there'd be an excessive amount of complaining from even some of the people saying "it doesn't matter".
This is seriously a very racist comment and I am not joking one bit when I say this. Not only did you put a big stereotypical label on African-Americans, but you referred to a group of people as just "they". Seriously, you may not think much of it, but labels and comments like this are just precursors to much more serious acts of racism, all the way down the road genocide. Think about what you say before you say it, we are supposed to be moving away from statements like this in this day and age.P.S. It doesn't matter if you were only joking if that is your excuse.

I think this thread has gone way off track....the OP simply asked if you can play an African race in the game. As you already know Funcom has decided to make available 3 races, and they are following the writing of Robert E Howard. There are Aquilonians (Romans), Cimmerians (Celtic type mountain dwellers), and Stygians. Stygians are supposed to represent an Egyptian race of people. All of these attempts at making a parellel conection to races that are familliar to us was completely intentional on Howards part. FunCom is only trying to stay true to the lore so i dont see the absence of the ability to make a character with "black" features as a shortcoming on thier part. That is NOT to say that it will not be present in the game, however, in answer to the OPs question, i believe it all depends on the developers interpretation of the Stygians as seen by Robert E. Howard.
Now from the looks of it throughout the character customization videos, i Believe i have seen many African type characters as options, probably from choosing Stygians as a starting race and choosing the darker end of the skin color spectrum, whereas if it was Cimmerian or Aquilonian it wouldnt make any sense. SO yes i Believe that due to some leeway given to the Stygian charcter customization by the devs you will be able to play person closely resembling an African person. This is based off of my Understanding that Stygians were closely resembling that of Egyptians. If anyone has a different perspective on how REH originally depicted the Stygians please fill me in.
It's said that aquilonians vary in complextion and have more of a cultural diversity than other races. Meaning they were a multicultural society like the Romans. Since there were black Romans, it's quite possible that the devs have given players the ability to make black Aquilonians...but I haven't seen this so far, I wont doubt it's a possibility.

Hmm, that's kinda true... or not. Even ancient egypt was a mixture of races - your basic one was the "original" ancient kingdom egyptians which were most definitely black (but still mysterious regarding their origin) with a later influx of middle eastern semitic, indo-european (aryan) and east-african (Nubian) ones.. However after a few tens of generations it all starts to resemble a homogenous population/race so there definitely is an "egyptian" look.
So... since Stygia obviously equals Egypt expect all kinds of skin colors and features there - from Nubian (Shemite) sub-saharan black to cimmerian type light skin/dark hair (since both the high Stygians and Cimmerians actually descend from the older wicked race of Atlantis)
So when a white skin coloured individual doesnt want to play a black colored toon he is being racist, but a black individual wanting to play only black skinned toons is normal?????????
Alll of your characters come from one of three countries. These are proto-medieval countries (i.e., not open heterogenous countries like the US or England). If you want to be black as in of negroid origins, you probably need to be from Kush or someplace. Cimmeria and Aquilonia are definitely caucasoid. I think Stygia is a cross between African jungle and Egyptian mythos so perhaps you could play a black character from Stygia. I don't know if you can be of mongoloid origins, either, as those countries are not represented in the first release.

If you aren't sure about black characters in Robert E Howard, then you haven't read him. He does not portray them kindly, being a white man in the segregated south (Texas) and a product of his society.
If you don't know how to edit your post ("black a black guy") then you are probably a troll.
well now we've established there are black people in AoC (well they are more like middle eastern, but you could darken thier skin alot), this got me thinking...

You CAN have black people in LOTRO. Just go to the character creation screen and choose the race of Man from the land of Gondor.
You can make a black person from that model. Male or Female.

All three of these authors portrayed black or Arab as evil in there books. The champions of truth in there eyes were Caucasians.
3. People need to do there research on the origins of man because way back somewhere in your history you were BLACK. and came from east Africa.

Some mmorpg do have black humans not just dark shaders over Caucasian features.

No one is saying that so don't try to reverse it or warp it in your own undercover way. What the OP is going on about is CHOICE..do you know the word?The fact remains that 9/10 times the choice is not there to play a black toon with black features not some dark shaders.
Lets turn it around like you have tried to...Say most mmorpg only depicted black toons in their game you would have a problem with it?.

I'm a black-european guy (irish, british, dutch, romanian, and french) with bronze skin, and I really don't care whether AoC will have a "black" skin tone lol; Not to sound mean or anything. But I am pretty sure, though, that there will be customizations where you will be able to configure your skin tone to dark brown and such. So yea, question answered!

A) Scientifically the word race is quite valid. The white race indeed does not exist as it's called the Caucasian race, and btw, Iranians belong to that one. Although there's a theory going around that the white skin tone of europeans is a result of an accidental period of inbreeding that emphasised the mutation of the gene that determined the amount of melanosomes in the skin. This would by the definition of race make possible a 'white' race.
Politicians, not scientists, later used the evolutionary theory to justify their mistreatement of Africans. Also, Europeans were the majority culture in this time...they were a minority population. Get your terms right.
Finally as interbreeding between the subspecies(=race) continues due to the detoriation of global barriers, there won't be races anymore. So hopefully this discussion will someday be nonexistant
Tolkien centered his work around Nordish culture beginning with his development of fictional languages. He never included black people but only dark tanned people with cultural treats similar to those of the Persians and Indians. Furthermore he condemned the Nazi race-doctrine, anti-semitisme and, hold your horses, apartheid.
C) As stated earlier, Iranians are part of the Indo-European race and migrated later to the West. They weren't the birthplace, they were just one of the places where they split up.
Furthermore, pre-history is the period where there's no written records...that means Europeans did have a pre-history. Look up the Celts and notice how they didn't have a written language untill around the Roman time and even then only used in ceremonial affairs.
It's dumbshit people like you who don't do their research. Racism is morally wrong, but for everyone arguing that there's no difference in human kind that can be defined as race. Shut your ignorant asses and instead do something useful and find arguments and ways to break down the social construct of racism. Difference in the way of races is a good thing. Go check up how genetics work and then go look what part of the populations wins most competitions, beauty contests or whatever: not black people, not white people, not asian people but people with mixed heritage.

I appreciate the righteous indignation and concern of my black brothers. But let's not forget our asian brothers. I have read on Wikipedia that about 60 % of the human population is asian.
Sorry I had to type so big and change the text color, but asians are the invisible and silent 'minority'. Only time they get mentioned in mmo's it seems is when people are complaining about Chinese Gold Farmers or bashing anime.
But asians need love too. We are under represented in movies, television, music, sports, etc. And if blacks are in game it only seems fair that asians are in game too.
