LOL! More like "Age of Caveman" These char models suck!

Wow.

What a letdown.  Im a collector of Conan books, paintings, graphic novels, movies, comics, etc... and I was expecting a beautifully rendered ARTISTIC impression of the Conan world...  This looks like Turok The Aztec Caveman... !

What the hell is with all the facepaint and feathers?  Why does everyone look like primitive slaves instead of noble wandering bloodlust barbarians?

Why do the graphics look like Everquest?  They really should have taken a page out of THE ARTISTS BOOK (not the gameplay) from the artists behind Chronicles of Spellborn, WoW, Guildwars, or Lineage and not tried to make everything look so REAL.  In doing so they make it look drab, fake, and gross...

Where is the stylized art?... I wanted to look at this and have it feel like Cary Nord drew the characters... thick outlines, maybe even celshaded... almost an animated movie feel but clearly realistic...  What we get instead is this...?

Sorry but this sucks.

This cannot be a serious thread. Are you really saying that AoC, using dx10 looks like crap? And are you really saying it looks like EQ? Did you ever play EQ? This made me laugh so hard I almost fell out my computer seat. So are you really serious? If so ill post some screenies for ya, if your serious that is. Also i would love to see what you think looks bland instead of a statement like you made.

They did a good job getting the models right then.  Oh, you don't like the style.. wait .. wait... nope.. I don't care.  Go find WAR, you'll like the art, dudette.

To each there own regarding art direction, I suppose. Technically, the game's graphics are pretty well toward the top of the list. I would say, however, the art direction gives me a mixed feeling. Sometimes the screenshots look absolutely beautiful, but at others it seems unbearable to look at.

In other words, I think the technical side of things is great and in some cases they take great advantage of that, but artistically it seems inconsistent. But again, I might be in the minority in that regard.

My problem with the graphics is -- they had a HUGE pool of illustrative creativity to draw from.  Comics, graphic novels, etc.  and instead of taking a really inspiring artistic approach to character models instead they chose to do the "realistic" look, which makes all characters look like mud, or clay... look at the colors of the people on this screenshot dude, they look like they're from EQ2, 2004:

Look at the textures of the walls and shit... it looks like EQ2.  gross, bland.

It looks believeable. Its not ding dong flashy soap smelling cartoons like you see in games like Lineage 2. It looks like REAL heroes.

Hyboria is a gritty word with dirt blood and vomit. With naked dancing girls running in fear from ravagers and dark sorcerors with blasted minds dabling with inhuman alien powers that is beyond evil.

They have at least done the looks right.

When you make the game you can choose the graphics style, until then go read all your comics and collectibles if you like them more.

I see your problem right here.  No, AOC isn't a metro artists dream, its a computer game designed to look gritty and realistic.  You want art, go visit a museum. Me, I'm looking for a good game, the art/graphics are a secondary concern and AOC is more than adequate.

Who the hell are you, and why should I care?
Congrats! You are a victim of Trollstar!

You sir are why Disney created Pirates of the Caribean. Simple idiots who don't know a damn thing about how good a "real" game looks, or how a game like this should be made.

Games like Chronicles of Spellborn, Wow, Guildwars, Lineage ALL had shit for world design and graphics. they were/are ALL cartoony bullcrap and don't convey how the game should feel.

The Developers for AoC did a wonderful job at conveying the game's feel via the graphics system and art they provided in the game.

The OP is obviously NOT a Conan fan as he "proclaims" and is nothing more than a joke!

The AoC artist had to choose ONE look for the game. Sorry that the OP didnt like it. An artist cant make all viewers happy you know.

I think AoC have the best graphics of all  western MMOs.

Could someone explain to me what... Conan books etc.. came with this photorealistic art?

Having read Conan comics for a good many years.. .read the books... hell the "Conan" collectors DVD came with a ton of stuff on the "original art" they used to inspire concepts for the movie..

In all of that I never saw this photo realistic art.

I saw dark.. gritty... oddly just like the game.

So troll or not... WTF books are you talking about?

    As an example..

    http://frazettaartgallery.com/ff/bio/1960/1960_pg4.html

Frank Frazetta is a fairly well known artist that did a lot of work in Conan Material... so again.. what specific source.. is this photo realistic pretty version of Conan?

The majority of the art related to conan is just not what the OP is talking about.

Obviously the easiest assumption is that this is a troll post.  However, pretending its not... it just boggles me if this person was "for real" and "serious".

I do agree with the fact that the character creation is too cavemanish for me, but overall the graphics are great.  It is a very grizzly style of game.  The characters do look primitive, but this was the intentions of Funcom.  I'm not even going to comment on the EQ analogy because that is just silly.  Your entitled to your opinion, but the most important thing is that the game plays great.  If you love the WoW or L2 style of graphics then stick with those games.

Sorry having plastic looking bodies don't make it look like "real" heros. What's the point of trying making things real looking when it ends up with pretty terrain but awkward looking characters, with overly glossy texture and souless looking features? They look like penguins in a jungle.

    Bollocks!

I believe the game is set umm..  only in like 10 000 BC.  I rekon FC did a wonderful job on creating that world.  I can't see how you would prefer to have animations from WoW.  How is it even different?

And the graphics, can not be anything like EQ, it is using directX 10 technology, making it the best looking MMO at the moment.  If you want cartoon style MMO's stick with WoW!

Its hilarious how people argue about entirely subjective things such as this. Obviously the art direction in any game will appeal to some people and not to others.

I personally love the direction that the art is going in AoC, but I also understand that it is completely futile to try to persuade others of this opinion. The OP apparently does not agree and no amount of arguing will make him...  so this entire thread is pointless.

  • ArielAriel Member UncommonPosts: 33

I agree with most of the other posters and disagree with the OP but I will say that everyone looks the same. I've looked at hundreds of screenshots and have about 50 high resolution ones saved to my computer for repeat viewing. Unless you are wearing a feather headress or demon armor, I'm not going to be able to tell anyone apart.

It reminds me of Star Wars Galaxies (but with only humans)...what is the point of spending an hour customizing your face and body when nobody will ever see it? You could spend 20 minutes just tweaking your nose, ears, and eyes, but when do you ever run up to someone and stare them in the face with full zoom on?

If I see my friends in town in AoC I'd walk right by them without seeing their names over their heads.
