The zones are always populated since they are population controlled. If a zone starts emptying it will automatically combine with another zone that has players.

And GW isn't gear based, you can make a PvP char with all items perfect and start PvPing, or you can start a PvE char and it is easy to get it max level and get the best items for him.

However there are much flamers in the game.

It is hard to get to the top 50 gvg, but if you get there you get the best PvP experience you will ever have.

Edit: I did play at the top, so i know how it is xD, however the PvE people are rude.

There are tons of players, especially around this time of year. Plus, if you can't find anyone Guild Wars allows you to use henches/heroes.

GW is free to try if you locate a trial (also called "buddy" keys). Check some GW forums many people give them away. You download the client online and you can play 14 days so thats not bad to try it out. 14 days (or there might be max # of hours) is enough to develop a char through basic training and see how the gameplay suits you.

I do PvE alone a lot, and found you can do most of the early parts of the campaigns this way. Sooner or later you do have to team up to tackle some of the harder missions. But by that time you would have to own the game. BTW, if you do the trial, and choose to stay, you can put in the full key and not loose the char you were playing during trial, so you don't "waste" the trial time.

    I like GW for

    - F2P (no monthly fee)

    - graphics are really good, I like the look of the game (except Factions campaign)

    - I can run it even on lower graphics PCs and runs ok

    - I can go in do something quick in a few minutes or sit and play a long dungeon for hours.

    - I can team, but I don't have to.

    - The play sequence on PvE is not very "forced". I was actually playing 3 campaigns recently almost at the same time.

I have never tried WoW.... but might very soon, just to try.

Sadly the trial only allows up to 5 hours of playtime or 10 days (whichever is up first). Not near enough imho but better than nothing I guess.

  • Really depends on what you want.

-The two are the top two titles for population, although technically since you can play with any GW player the "population" is higher since its not segragated and WoW is completely segregated (except for the cross server BGs which are still segregated into groups).

-Arena style PvP is better in GW, no question

-WoW has world PvP.  GW has none.

-Otherwise the character systems are very different and the pay system is very different.

Obviously GW is less risky to try since its far cheaper.  GW is a game I think all MMO players should try because it has a number of novel play mechanics and interresting restrictions.  Playing a healing monk in GW is completely unlike most any other RPG healer.   Also in the last campaign (Nightfall) they added some cool stuff like special PvE only skills that turn you into a gigantic worm with its own skill set. And the Eye of the north adds in some interesting earned PvE-only skills.  GW and Eve are certainly the most inventive MMO-style games in my opinion.   I personally would rather get a new power to use than a new sword that is 10% better.

However if you are looking for long term drawn out gathering of levels and gear GW is not going to satisfy that at all or if you do not like the 8 skill per instance limit so WoW would be better  I personally like having my guy at max level so that I can take advantage of most of the powers.  In GW you are max level with only a few skills (usually elite) to acquire for half of the PvE content.   But many people feel that without levels they have nothing to do

GW involves alot more skill in the gameplay, you can use skills a lot more and managing their use and timing is very important.  And once you have reached the second half of the PvE content its more about perfecting builds and doing the the content than getting the next uber piece of armor or weapon.

They wind up being fairly different play experiences with different motivations.  They actually complement each other fairly well.  GW can replace WoW's arena PvP and is certainly superior in every way, but other than that they really do not "replace" each other the way EQ2 and WoW would.

    @ op

if you really want to sit down, and get into a game where you can meet a lot of people and friends, go for wow. the only downside of  WoW i have seen so far is the 15$ a month you pay.

[here's where the mmorpg GW trolls crawl out]

Guild Wars atm is a useless game to get into and play. Depending on which game you buy, there realy isn't a lot of activity. If you want to play a free monthly pvp esque game, get guild wars prophecies and factions.  Since NF and GWEN, noone runs missions with pug's and finding gewd pve guilds are 1 in a million.

I myself am a pvper to the end, and even I am playing EvE to have fun on the computer with friends.

That's what the buddy key description in my Nightfall Collector's Edition box says...

  • Lonesamurai1Lonesamurai1 Member Posts: 1,210

They did change the trial keys from 10hours/14 days to 5hours/14days aswell as putting the restrictions in place about dropping/trading items on trial accounts because of gold sellers

They changed it at nightfall release, but some trials are still available that do 10hours

I never played it, but I would have to say WoW. In guild wars there are still a few things holding it back:

no gm to help, have to go on to the site to report something.

game being used by some as a chat room or a place to see something dance around armorless.

nothing new has been added that we have not already seen and changes that are not even noticible.

people might be joining but, there are still others leaving because of how bad the community is getting.

no way at times to form a group or to get any help; hench and heros are used more now.

level point is and has been 20 through proph, factions, nightfall, and eye of the north and will never change.

From what I have seen from WoW while watching a firend play, it is worth the fee and actually has more than what guild wars or the upcoming guild wars 2 can ever offer.

Asking on the GW forums will of course provide you with answers that all are leaning towards GW being a better game. Asking on WoW forums will get answers leaning towards WoW. I'm no exclusion to this, I would suggest GW with the reasons stated above in all other posts.

I will choose WOW~~It is the best MMORPG that I have ever seen.

The picture is excellent, the plots are well-desighed. I don't mind spending sum of money playing it every month.

Now this is outright funny when you compare WOW to Guild Wars. I have played both games alot!

it would be alt more acurate to state that picture style are diffeeent where WOW is cartoonish, and Guild Wars is more detailed.

Plots - Guild Wars PvE is storyline driven , with missions that take's you trough a story there open up access to new territories. That IMHO fits alot better to the words well design-designed plots.

To OP:  what also need to be mentioned is that

everything in Guild Wars are instances , there is no online persistent world! Its vere easy to play solo because of henchmen and heros.

WoW is properly the best GRIND game ever made! IF addicted to the endless goal to getter better equipment and progress to a new place to get it, then WOW is the right game.

I played both games , 3+ years WoW , 2+ years GW and i can only say i like both games , both got strong and weak sides , but remember no one can tell you which game you should play .

It really depends on what you want in a game. Guild Wars is PvP oriented and WoW is more PvE oriented. Not to say that Guild Wars has a bad PvE experience, its just a much more PvP based game.

That would be the same as asking: apples or oranges?

Or more specifically, asking "apples or oranges" in a shop that only sells oranges. You'll still see a few lone apple merchants trying to trashtalk oranges with nonesense but they usually get dealt with... Till people in the orange shop just ignore them because it's not even worth the hassle.

may I suggest split this question into 2 and asking one in the WOW forums and one here. I think you should ask what people like about each of these games in there respective forums. And the secondary question, what don't they like about the game. With this kind of info I think you can make a better choice of which game you might think is suitable for you.
