I honestly don t think i will like this game at all so i know if there isn t one i won t be buying/trying it at all. Untill a trial comes out of course but by then i ll be playing the game i m waiting for anyways
I always thought "open" meant open to testers who are not just employees, family, and friends.
You don't sound like you really want to test the game. That's what beta is for, not free play. They said this week open beta will be tens of thousands of people.
I can agree with the OP that at some point the NDA should be lifted to give fans access to testers' comments.
Open beta just means that there is no NDA. You can post everything you hate/like about the game.
I can't wait to be able to express my opinions on this game/beta. I just can't!!
There was an uproar when the news came out that there wouldn't be an open beta. So what did they do? They said, "Oh no, that was a misunderstanding. Of course we're going to have an open beta. We're going to take applications and then choose a limited number of additional testers. And you won't know if we took 1 or 100 more testers. And the NDA will still be in effect. That's an open beta, right?"
They're just playing word games. A rose is a rose. But a hunk of moldy cheese can never be a rose no matter how often you call it a rose.
The thing that amazes me is how well it worked for them. They just called a closed beta an open beta and most people suddenly loved them again without ever questioning the reality of it.
Actually the OP is right about this. There was an uproar when the news came out that there wouldn't be an open beta. So what did they do? They said, "Oh no, that was a misunderstanding. I could not agree more. If they want to trick us it should have require more effort then that.
For anyone that did not participate in "open beta" for Anarchy Onile or did not feel the pain of its release do some research on it. It is hands down in the top 2-3 worst releases of all time, and this is the company that will be releasing AoC.
You buy this game without being in beta you really do it with the full understanding that they have a history of horrible releases. My advice, wait at least a week and see what people are saying about it (Vanguard ring a bell?) Trust me a week is easy to make up, but droping cash on a POS product isnt easy to take when you know the company has such a bad history with MMO's.
I do agree that there is nothing open about the Beta in AOC. Its probably a good idea. But that will probably mean I will be waiting for the free trial to see if this game is worth playing. Its not worth throwing away money into MMORPGs since many of them are big flop.
I dont know if WoW was called "open beta" but it took at least very little effort to get in it. And there were huge masses of players who got in and really enjoyed the game. It is largely what made WoW what it is today. Millions of players bought the game just because of good gameplay in the beta and it gave Blizzard the funds to continue to develop the game into even better game.
Very few makers of MMORPGs will be able to do this just because way to often the game is still very raw when it even launches. That means the "open" beta will get more negative talk than positive.
But this game IS gonna need "open" beta to get the masses playing. It is intreducing totally new fighting system that already has caused problems with the closed beta testers. So I think its wise that everyone leaves this game alone till they have tested it themselfs and are happy with it. And since there isn't really a open beta then the trial will be the next best thing.
So time to wait 8 months to check if this game is worth ever buying.

Yes, you guys are right. Nothing is ever misunderstood through interviews or the media in general.
My God, give it a rest.

This is no POS product.
And I'm pretty sure they learned something from the AO launch...not to do it again.
