Slayers

So I remeber reading something about slayers being playable later down the road.  I know it could of just been someone blowing smoke I really cant remeber.  I know they are going to be in game in the dwarf lands but will the dwarfs be killing them or the greenskins?  I know they are outcasts but I didnt think dwarfs killed them.  Maybe someone who knows the background of the story with them might be able to share with me :)

I know its a long shot and will never happen but it would be cool if we could play as a slayer.

I believe EA Mythic commented on Slayers quite a long time ago, and said they would not be playable in any way, ever. However, I think they did hint they may make an appearance as NPCs and such.

It is problematic to include Slayers as a playable career as they want to die in combat to recover from a dishonour. While it makes little sense for any career to magically resurrect over and over upon death, it makes zero sense for them. They also are more given to wandering, not cooperating.

There are also supposed to be very few Slayers, due primarily to the fact that most do not live very long since they constantly challenge difficult opponents, like dragons and such. If they were in the game as playable characters there would be thousands.

Anyway, it seems to me that EA Mythic wants to keep Slayers special and part of the background and plot of the game. I think this is a good choice because it removes a lot of the coolness when they are not rare.

Thanks for the reply.  I understand why they would keep them out and Im sure tons of people would like to play them and cause an insane amount of something that should be rare.  I still want to play one maybe I can kill a dwarf kid and get kicked out to seek my death!  There is always the expansion...

Good to see someone who understands that making the Slayer class would dilute what they are.    They were originally planned to be a playable class, there are even old screenshots of them in the alpha, but Mythic no doubt realized the same thing you did - everyone would want to play them lol

If Mythic had the resources to waste, they could make the Slayers a 'hero' class that uses permadeath rules.   But then you'd have a bunch of cowardly Slayers who would be avoiding battles or only seeking out fights where they were certain to win.    Players whining for permadeath would never be able to have the fearless persona that Slayers are supposed to have.

Not only they seek honorable death, they are also semi naked to be more vulnerable in battle. And a naked self suicidal maniac is not  rewarding to be put in mmo.

Add great coolness of slayers and you also get population imbalance.

You mean like the super rare/powerfull magic weilding classes in the table top game that will be everywhere in WAR?

They weren't on the tabletop because they ran over to play in the MMO.

You mean the 'super rare' magic wielders that are so commonly chosen by people to be part of their TT armies?

I'm not saying Mythic hasn't made their own changes to the Warhammer setting.  (Female dwarfs being just one example) But player characters are supposed to be elite champions in the Realm conflict, not the NPC cannon-fodder, and they mingle with the most powerful individuals in the world.     Players get to deal with or even *fight* Malekith and Karl Franz afterall.

Magic types show up all the time in the Warhammer novels.  That's because the novels are about elite champions, just like player characters.

And you're talking about diluting HOW MANY there are, I'm talking about diluting WHAT Slayers are.

Even if there are 1000s and 1000s of magic wielders, they are still trying to kill their ancenstral enemies in unending battles, just like the magic wielders on a TT game.

Player character Slayers would be loot-grubbing  cowards who would be whining for heals and running away if it looked like they were going to die as well as being more interested in gaining their next level rather than seeking out battles with impossible odds.    That's not WHAT a Slayer is.

You could have an entire army of 1000s of Slayers, the numbers don't change what they are.    And MMORPG gamers just don't want to play what a Slayer needs to be.

I think they will put it in later with expansions they sound like they want it to be a playable class in there F.A.Q grab bags.  I dont see how it would be any harder to work than any other class.  They are naked sure but you also have classes playing in nothing but leather and even robes.  In the lore Slayers are suppose to not know pain and so on so I dont see the armor as a big deal.  They still hold relations to dwarfs and they even have their own armys and leaders in some versions.  As far as a population imbalance I dont even think it would matter becaues people dont play dwarfs if anything it might help even it out a bit.  People will always play humans first and then the elf classes slayer wouldnt really effect that a whole lot.

I do however like the fact that it might be added later as a hero class or something in expansions.

Well you can always play the p&p RPG... I had a Troll Slayer once and I actually never died... then killed a Troll and became a Giant Slayer... then I sadly never played with that character again.

Dwarven armies were abit overpowered on TT, cheap regiment pts and cheap but powerful rune magic . Well they were untill a certain edition of the TT core rule book, after that I don't know, never played TT anymore since late 90s.

I was actually a bit concern Rune Priest would be a bit overpowered in WAR. I know now it's not really like  that, so I can breath with more ease (I'm all chaos, all the way...).

I was actually looking for some info about Dwarf Slayers.

Cheers to the OP for making questiuons before me and to Sornin for answering them.
