Hi guys, looking for a game with a good Bard type class that use songs, instruments etc. I have tried EQ, EQ2, Vanguard bard classes but want to try any others also that are out there and useful for high end gaming i.e raiding etc. Please let me know if there are any other games with bards like this. thank you

Dark Age of Camelot's Minstrel's (Albion realm) were always my favorite interpretation of the Bard Class.

You get to play different instruments, each which help your party either run faster (+100%), or heal, or regen mana or even freeze opponents in their tracks.  Couple that with a mezz, and ability to stealth, and climb keep walls (well, I guess everyone can do this now, sigh) and you have one of the most useful classes in the game.

Every group needs a Minstrel, so you won't stand around long.

The other realms have similar characters, (Hibs actually have a Bard class) but their abilities don't stand up to the Minstrel in my opinion.

I too am a Bard at heart, well, at least in MMOs anyway (I can't sing or play a lick of music b/c I'm pretty much tone-deaf). If you're looking for something new, and you haven't tried it yet, I suggest DAoC. DAoC has three Bard classes, one for each realm, that are all pretty solid and quite different representations of bard type classes. Each realms Bard class is different from the others and follows the main theme of each realm.

If my descriptions are off, cut me a break as it's been a few years since I played DAoC.

The Minstrel, which is Albions Bard class, is the jack-of-all-trades Bard.

The Bard, which is Hibernias Bard class, is more a caster then anything else, but they still have some melee skills.

Finally, the Skald, which is Midgards answer to the Bard, is more of a melee/battle Bard but still has some usefull spells/songs.

I really enjoyed playing all the Bard classes in DAoC, but my personal favorite was the Skald. I'm not taking anything away from the other two as all three are very viable, and strong classes, just that my personal preferance leans towards the Skald.

If you've never played DAoC I suggest you give it a shot. It's unlike most other games out there, and IMHO is easily one of the best PvP games ever made. The RvR is pure PvP fun featuring keep/castle/stronghold sieges complete with siege weapons and the whole nine. It also has a PvE component which mainly serves as the means of gearing, and leveling up for the epic RvR encounters against the other realms. And, since you enjoy Bard-type classes, you'll be in heaven since there are three different flavors of Bard for you to try, and choose from.

EQ and DAoC have the best implemenation of Instrument based (Bard) classes.

Others have something, but not really instrument based.

And of the two, I would have to say EQ is the most developed.  Twisting songs while switching instruments and weapons.  Those were the days...

Final fantasy xi has a bard class too, but I haven't got any experience with bards in other games so I don't know if it's what you're looking for. Basically, it's a class that pretty much purely buffs teammates. Each song you play is an aoe buff and others can have a maximum of two buffs from a bard on them. There are different instruments/songs. You can play every song on every instrument, but certain instruments improve certain groups of songs. Imo a weak part of the implementation of the bard class is that there are several groups of songs, each with several songs in it that have a somewhat similar effect. However, each song in a group uses the exact same music. The instrument used also has no effect on how the song sounds if I recall correctly.

Also, people probably want you to work as a back-up healer (the game has a system where you can have a second job at half the level of your main job, bards usually use white mage for this) and not melee.

One plus of playing a bard in the game is that it is pretty the most in demand job in the game. The buffs are so powerfull that pretty much every party wants a bard if they can get it. However, the class is an advanced job, meaning that you have to play another class up to lvl 30 before you can become one. This can take quite a while depending on your playstyle. I've been playing the game for about a month now and my highest lvl is a lvl 25 warrior.

Edit: It is a pure pve game though.

Dream of Mirror Online has a musician class that's always in demand in mid to high-level parties.  They use songs & instruments to boost players'  & pets' MP, and are both soloable with pets & party-friendly in that game.

Mabinogi is another one with a bard class.  In that game you can write your own music and have your toon play it in the game.  It's gonna go cb in NA in 2 weeks.  You can go to the youtube site to check out other players' music.  Very cool stuff.

Of all the MMORPGs I have played, EQ1 had the most developed and deep Instrument / Song based Bard.

If you decide to try it, I would recommend the RP server, FV.

Or check the boards for a good population standard server.

EQ1 Bards can solo quite well.

And really well with good Instruments.

And, nothing runs faster than a Bard !    :)

No one like Vanguard, I know, but their bards are pretty cool. They are combatants, but their songs are what make them amazing. You write your own compositions by putting together mixes of songs. I.e. Open up your composition book, choose a rhythm, a chorus, a verse, etc.. Each one of those gives a different buff so you can mix up all your different pieces of music into different compositions for different needs.

Plus bards are ALWAYS wanted in groups because they are the best buffers, decent CC, and pretty good DPS.

I have a bard on vanguard at lvl 50 but too many bugs in that game and raid content isn't decent yet. i am going to dry dream of mirror downloading as we speak. The thought of getting to 30 before being a bard class in FF puts me off that game. thanks for the reply's guys. ANy other games with a bard class?
