As a newbie to VG, i cant say im impressed by it. This dev seems to use the 'since i get in trouble for promising stuff and not delivering on it, i wont promise anything' approach. Does this mean he will do this from now on? Actually the more i think about it, it actually ticks me off alot. So from now on VG updates will only contain little details untill they are actually released and then the VG players get to see what 'santa left them'. FS!!!! And they finally give permanent mounts, but only Griffon mounts, not the Pegasus mount or Wyms!!! I'm back in WOW alliance side all over again!!! Seriously, i'm really surprised the players who replied to his 'letter' didn't flame his ass off. It's a joke of a letter!
It's been a year, i've since gotten a new rig, but the game ran like crap a year ago... I would be interested in playing if it looked like they were going to do something... like release a trial, get new players, so I could play some new people... new new new.... will it ever happen with this game or do THEY (soe I guess) think it's dead?
That was available only to ex-players though; i.e. the root of all the bad word of mouth Vanguard has. Obviously not many of 'em gave it a try, and even if every single one of them did (which would've required more servers due to overfilling, in contrast to the ghost town of four servers I witnessed), they'd still amass to a number that pales in comparison to the millions of MMO players a free trial would open the game up to.
But for him that's fine. Still, I would've liked some news about Trial Island.
I played the free month and I'll resub, it's not perfect but VG is vastly better than it was performance wise, but the combat system, class system and grouping mechanics always were far more interesting than anything else out there for PvE.
If only they could have scratch built a suitable engine for the game from the outset, not expected a fps engine to draw 50times further and 50times more mobs/objects/textures than it was designed for.

The engine is hardly the problem. More like the people who did the coding for it. Look at Lineage 2 I belive its off a heavily modified Unreal 2 engine as well. I never had a problem running lineage 2. It all depends on what they want to use it for and how well they modify it. DAoC was built off the net immerse engine. I do not think at the time of camelot's devolpment that their were any engines supporting mmo's but Mythic also made it work. So really it comes down to how good are you at your job and how much time do you have to work on it.
So it looks as if the plan to consolidate all of the races into one starting island, then revamp the current starting areas into higher level quest areas is still in the works.
I found zero performance increase. In fact it performs no better than it did when I had all the ini tweeks from before. There were plenty of players but the game had exactly the same bugs as were there ages back.
I saw very minor improvements. None in the places they needed to be.
no mention of any plans for a TRIAL ? ever?! It's been a year, i've since gotten a new rig, but the game ran like crap a year ago... They said that the trial would be coming sometime after GU4 so I'm guessing maybe april or may...
Why create a trial before the game is ready?!
I think they are doing the right thing, fix bugs & quest issues, fix stability, graphics performance, add things people complain about (weather, helms, flying mounts), address grouping and add polish over all.
Then finally when the game is good release a new trial and a marketing push.

Mainly because the trial island was first mentioned as an important step in actually getting the game "ready". The originally plan was to create Trial Island with re-optimized art assets, and then begin doing the same thing to the entire world once Trial Island was live.
So at least in the past, the emergence of Trial Island meant the first step of a total re-optimization of all the art assets in the game.
Whether or not this still stands true completely, who knows. One important thing has changed, Trial Island is no longer a standalone client, and is instead a new starting area enforced on everyone...that doesn't necessary change the optimization plans aforementioned though.
Either way, at least for me, I want to see how well the client performs in Trial Island, since its supposed to be an indicator of how the entire game world will perform when re-optimizations are complete.
My read of the situation is that the devs have a well defined checklist of where they want the game to be when the Trial Island goes live. After what happened at launch, they don't want the spotlight back on the game until they are confident its ready.
I want to see things move along as quickly as everyone else, but I don't mind seeing the trial hold off a little until the game is at the point where people are gonna be really amazed by the product when they give it a crack.

I hear what you all are saying about the trial and it makes sense to me. I didn't get the 'free month' because I was only in CB.
Getting it finished before a big trial and marketing push makes sense. I'm willing to give a game a second chance when it's changed hands, my hardware has been upgraded, and the engine has undergone some work. IF it flops on the trial, then I will never come back again to check on it. But if they get it running good; I would love to play it.
And no, I'm not going to beg for a buddy key and play by myself. That's boring. I would like to see a big free trial that works good, meet some new people, and maybe even start on some new server if they would create a few.
But considering the history of the game, it seems like a big free trial and marketing push (seeing the links here and there on websites etc) would be the big indicator that it's time to check it out again. I'm looking forward to it... hope it happens somewhat soon... (before AoC / WAR etc.... )

I think that was the plan a long time ago but has changed. There was quite an outcry claiming this would be a bait and switch tactic which frankly I agree with. How would you feel if you played the trial and it was good and the rest of the game after you bought it was worse?
No doing the trial island should follow fixing the game. We want VG to grow not have yet another set of bad publicity and a bad second launch. Best to be patient and let them get things fixed before trying to drive the number of subs up. I'm sure they are eager to grow the game but also don't want to repeat the mistakes of the past.
I think they will only release the trial island after the game mechanics and performance are good for most of the potential players and theirs computers. They won't accept another failure at release because most of the people can't run the game with an acceptable FPS or because the game crashes often.

If you have no performance increase since "ages" in VG, you really should get someone to take a look at your computer There are also several bugs fixed. My guess is that you have never played the game.
The dev letter was pretty good but the letter about the PvP contest was shit.
I am so damn sick and tired of the developers of Vanguard saga of zeroes not trying to make the game great in aspect of other mmos that paved the way for it to be made.
I'm gonna tell you all for those that were not in beta of feed back we had actually gave Brad and other developers (not there any longer) of just how the PvP dynamic for this game should work.
Make it where the evil aligned races could raid and fight against other players that are defending
Make it where the flying mounts actually did some type of attack from the air such as Wyrms shooting a fireball, Griffons doing a dive attack or dropping a boulder onto enemies, Wyverns shooting a ice ball or something.
Make it where the giant cross bow weapons could actually fire back when defending, etc...etc.
Again I ask where are the other flying mount quests, yeah we got Wyvern and Griffons but where the hell are the WYRMS! "I been waiting on these mounts since launch".
It's a embarrasment for a Dark Elf to ride a Griffon and a Wyvern "unless your name is Drizzle, drizzzlet or something of the gay sort".
What we get is the same ole contest we have in EQ2 and WOW "which again is shit".
I thought about coming back to the game this month but I see they still do not know what direction they want to go with Vanguard and still plan on hosting a boring grind junk mob environment as its predecessors. I wish they just concentrate on the things that people have consistantly complained and put on the forums for them to read/shakes head...nevermind forget it

You did have a free month?
I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.

What goes around.. is useually a disease
To find out about that, you'd have to wade through the thread to page 6, where this exchange happens:

Thanks, I can't wait to see what the change in skeletons will do (praying not much on the side of race customization)
