Just as EQ2's early 20 level map to get to final class hurt that game, the tutorial will hurt the Conan game.
Maybe if they made the tutorial relevant and just one level in length; enough to learn how to fight, move, open inventory, loot corpses, buy/sell to merchants, etc.
But a 20 level "script" you must follow for maximum benefit detracts from the freedom that MMORPG's should offer.
As I have said before in other posts, I will wait a month or so after release to read the reviews of this game. Until then, I hope the dev's have tne sense and reason to remove that long, scripted tutorial and make Age of Conan the game it is meant to be.

There are numerous things about AoC that are turning me off, but I agree -- this might be the worst if it turns out to be the way they work it.
I guess you do not understand how it will work. Yes, there will be a single player instance that you can enter up to level 20, where you must complete your class quests. But at any time after you reach level 5, you will be able to enter/leave the instance at will.
If they truly want to present an immersive world, then why not drop the players right into it? Why this "instanced" tutorial crap that's just a major turnoff for most gamers?
Not knocking the idea of a Conan MMORPG; that's great. I just think instanced tutorials blow.
i really don't see the problem, the leveling will be fast enough so that the first five levels should only take you around 15 minutes...not really that long to introduce all the cool features

The first 5 levels are for yourself, to get to know the controls and to get a feel for the game. It is debatable if that is necessary, but it certainly isn't a killer. How long does it take to get from 1 to 5? 1 hour? If you take your time (that is taking into account other MMO's out there right now).
After Level 5, you will always have the choice of the solo-content and the group/MMO content. You can switch from solo to multiplayer any time you want. So....I really don#t see why it would be a turnoff. You have your choices and at any time you can't find a group or dont want to find a group because you just want to play a bit for yourself, you do the solo stuff.
Seems OK to me. Of course, we'll have to see how it turns out in the end, but I am not particularly worried.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?

I many of the mmos I've played quite a large number of people play through the first 5 levels on their own. They want a time to figure out what everything does and put it to the test themselves.
When the game drops I think maybe 10% of the people will complain about this. The rest will just play through it, enjoy it and move on.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

you guys gotta learn to think outside the box for a sec. They are trying to be different, and so far it looks liek a great idea since the game has a story line to it.
I personally don t like it and as an above poster said this is one thing that is turning him off the game as of late. I as well it just doesn t do it for me. At first it will be new and exciting i m sure but i see it becoming a niche game in the long haul.

Because some of us get tired of having the little kids of all ages asking "how do I move?" "How do I attack?" because they're too stupid, lazy, or both, to read and do the damn tutorial. Also, how about people who fail to research a little before coming off on a games' feature which only has to be done the first time you play and can be bypassed after that?
I really don't see the problem in this. The devs are just trying to make sure you get to know the game mechanics before you start conquering the realms. And besides, I think that's at least a decent try to cut down the ignorant questions like "How do i crouch? Anyone know how to open trade window?"
All this just cause you install game and skip tutorials, don't know what to do with manual and you've never heard of options--> config keys.
Edit: damn it Zorvan you were faster.
Hyping and condemning a game (any game) pre-launch is useless. We'll get to (hopefully without delay this time) play the final version, not the betas and not what we assume the game will be like.
Level 1 to 5 is really painless. I just hope that the end version will be as enjoyable as the WoW human starter area (loved it). Overall though this is not the part of the game that will make or break it, I'm more concerned about other issues (like PvP implementation aka relation between melee, ranged and healers etc, crafting, community not as in general channel but more as ability to find like minded individuals).
In LOTRO you start lvl 1-2 in private instanced quest that teaches you about the game.
Lvl 2-6 you are in public instance shared with the noobs.
It does cut on annoying questions, people creating chacters just to run naked around the town ...etc
But it is cumbersome.
And 20 levels of that....
Let see how do the do it before we judge
I have no idea how the masses will react to it, but for me personally this is exactly what I do with all MMOs.
I spend the first good little bit of time tooling around solo figuring things out and stuff.
If I bought AoC I would almost certaintly willing do the 20 level thingy.
However in some ways I think its bad even this is exactly what I do. To put it simply I think this is really just a restriction and not truly a "feature". If it wasn't restrictive it would be nice. But forcing people to do it isn't a great idea.
You should generally try to avoid resticting people, especially in arbitrary ways like this. Everyone tools around differently. And even if doing the 20 level thing may be in someone best interests if tehy don't want to do it and want to tool around in some other way forcing them to do it really serves no purpose. Because in the end you can't force them.
There will almost certainly be a number of people who want to immediately make some kind of throw away character and run around areas exploring and just doing whatever, not being stuck in some special isolated area.
you guys do know that your only in the single player isntance for 5 levels. after that you can group grind or do other quests to reach to level 20 and then leave tortage. if you want to do the destiny quests, just go to an inn and go to sleep, when you wake up, u will be in the single player instance again, if you want to go back to grouping, go back to sleep and your back live with everyone else.
I'm all for a five level solo game to start an MMORPG. It will cut down on those oh so amusing alts who just run around naked asking for money and the people who ask how to jump.
No announced feature of AoC has turned me off so far, it's more all the stuff that we don't know what's going on with it yet that is worrying me.
My wish is that you'd get to BE your class all the way through the levels 1-20.
Having every class be the same for 5 levels and then being a "gimped" version of your future self (not learning about your class but your archetype...) for the next 15.. meh.
I hope they've changed that.
Me and a few friends are looking forward to this game because of this. We've all felt for a while now that story has been removed from the MMORPG genre and it is nice to see developers getting back to the roots of the genre.
Well in most games you have to buy lower level skills before you can buy the higher level ones anyway. That's really all I see going on here. When you're just some guy you buy the lower level skills, then you become the archetype and buy the mid level skills, then you become your actual class and start getting the better skills. I don't think it's such a big deal if you look at it that way.
