PotBS

The short of it

Sorry for the news folks, but this game just doesn't have the content to keep people playing for a long duration of time. It is a bit simplistic as far as actual game play. Sid Meier's Pirates actually has a little more depth of game play.

Now, with that stated.

I "didn't" partake in any PvP battles because they have not happened in game yet due to the fact that everyone is still starting out.

I "did" try manufacturing products though. This part of the game is okay. So are the basic sea battles. However, boarding combat is...terrible, simplistic, and frustrating. As fun as the basic sea battles are... my question is... is that enough to keep playing and paying month after month? Online games are supposed to be... complex, and have depth. You know, to keep you coming back. Besides missing out on port conflict and control in PvP combat. I feel like I've already seen it/done it in this game after two weeks.

My opinion is to skip this game and save your money, which is too bad.

I am personally looking for something new/refreshing to play.

Just my opinion.

Not to bash your post (I respect your opinion) but you do know that you can turn on your PvP flag in Open Sea and do PvP right?  I think you can do 6 vs 6 group battle (as I haven't try it, just read about it in the PotBS's official server forums)

    Current MMO: FFXIV:ARR

Past MMO: Way too many (P2P and F2P)

    I don't respect your opinion.

3 days in game and complaining that you can't feel the splinters in your arms from cannonballs hitting the decks then go and farm Honor points or something.

It has gained the nickname of Pirates of BORING Sea for some reason...

If PvP is the only things that work, then I must say that people who think that a good PvP supports a whole MMO (letting out freedom, immersion,  and all other things) then should try chess. Its thousand times more entartaining and intelligent than any PvP around. We do play MMOS for the whole package.

By the way, no, the PvP of PoBS is not good, its just silly once you catch the thing.

Mmmm.... Farming..... is that what players are reduced to when seeking fun in an online game?

PotBS is primarily about RvR and PvP. If you havent tried either of those two aspects of the game then you simply havent seen what the game has to offer. Its like going to a museum and not seeing the primary exhibits.

To answer your question, for me, the sea battles are enough to keep playing month after month (just like raiding was enough to keep playing in WoW for example). When you and 24 other friends go up against 25 other people whom you wish to swim back home, its just down right awesome.

OK - that may be true.  But how do you get access to these 25v25 engagements?

I only know of two ways since FLS has restricted the open sea PvP to 6v6 to prevent 'ganking' IIRC?

Landmark Battles - to change Realm control of a port.  You would probably have to be high level to get in on one of these?

Guild v Guild - a feature not yet in game IIRC - and one which some players may never see either?

Frankly, I can understand players being upset if they have to 'grind' for a month in order to level up have a chance to  access the content which apparently makes the game worth playing?  Particularly when there is a subscription fee involved.

Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.

Not to mention that you are forced to grind, endlessly at higher levels, PvE and the boring pretend economy where nobody makes a single item any differant than anything anyone else makes just to afford the PvP/RvR.

The game has a great ship combat PvP mechanic; sadly, it has little else and for it to work as a pay to play MMO it needs much more.

I have to agree that the game is lacking in some area's, but im optimistic to hope that things will change and be updated throughout the history of this game just like in any mmo online play subject to change. That being said the swashbuckling part of this game is..................how to say this ahhh I would much rather grind in matrix online than swashbuckling in this game( maybe that was to harsh) but I dreaded boarding ships due to that fact. I have recently however been playing alot of Sid's pirates, thats being said I have been wanting to give PotBS is real true shot and go ahead rather than a week of testing on an off (i'm a college student so I don't play games long since well i treasure my life and I also suffered from everquest addiction in HS). I have high hopes for this games future and feel it will greatly improve but right now I don't have to time for another grind or the money needed to do so plus other games stand out on my to buy list before this like CoD4 ( I know i feel like im commiting a crime by not owning it still). I really did enjoy my time spent in the game I think the addition of improved combat situations, maybe the ability to drink rum for kicks, bar fights breaking out, ability to walk on your ship in FPV, exploreable islands and jungles that aren't very restricted the small things such as this would make it more of a complete game and give me more to do and stare at ( i like pretty things). I might get bashed for these statements but I feel it would enhance the gamers exprience alot more, hell I would even like to be able to as a pirate capture a governors daughter , own a house, capture merchants and make them walk the plank , maroon someone. Perhaps im to picky or all these small things cost to much or get away from the true nature of the game who knows maybe they'll add something like a few of my suggestions or maybe another game in the future will have it over all i give the game a 7.5 out of 10 , with room for improvement in certain areas. Character creations however is a 9 as to I still think CoH has the 10 award there. I would also like to apologize to hardcore fans just my opinion also and I feel you got a good game here.

Nope, what I saw in your post, and adding that to a game that hasn't even had a cpu label on the box I see  that your basically asking FLS to recreate the 18th century (disease free).  So that you can better ...enjoy... nevermind that this game creates a specifically satisfying genre open to the MMO world.  On the highseas to boot.  Give em time and money (even mine) and I'm guessing they'll do well.  If not then we can all join the pre-cu SWG crowd and pour our sorrows onto these boards.  But till then the glass is half full for me.

Month? There are going to be tons of port battles occurring on the 2nd day of retail. The war is going to be hot and furious. Your level has nothing to do with your ability to enter a port battle.

To participate in a 25 vs 25 port battle You need to get contention points for that particluar port. You get these by sinking enemy ships close to that city or doing certain missions where You help to provide "unrest" for that city.

When the port battle is triggered the zone around that port becomes open pvp zone for 24 hours. Then after 24 hours, about 10 minutes before the battle starts, the computer selects the 25 player with the most contention points for that city who are currently online. Character level does not count.

When You get selected a popup message appears so You can decide to accept or decline. Then You get teleported in a ready room with the other 24 players where You have about 10 minutes to organise and discuss tactics. Then the battle starts...

There could be several port battles at the same time at several different cities...

Because port battles are announced 24 hours in advance You exactly know when they happen and You can schedule in advance to meet the time.

Big port battles can be very intense and fun when both sides have about the same number and strength. When one sides has the bigger numbers and bigger ships the outcome is...mostly predictable! But sometimes surprises happens, in beta some good organised small groups sank a fleet of more players in bigger ships quite a few times...

This is not exactly accurate. Each person who has a contention point has a ticket in the lottery system for each point they have. When it comes time to draw for the participants it's a random draw from everyone with at least one point. So, while you may have the most it doesn't mean you will get selected but it does mean you have a much greater chance than the person with only one contention point.

    Why?

Was you thinking AOC and POTBS would be the same game?

I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.
