With so many of the same or failed MMOs and a little daydreaming I thought I'd start a thread ripe for arguments and vacuous rants about top IP properties that couldnt miss as MMOs (in no particular order):
Harry Potter
Dr Who [could do a lot of server resets with time travel - would really make a lot of die-hards ticked off but it would always be an interesting game!]
Dragonriders (McCaffrey universe)
Transformers
Star Wars mmo done by Lucas +/- Bioware with the best graphics around (George and Co. have the money, the pride, and the prestige to raise the bar several notches on graphics and that might be enough with slightly better game play than most games out there to grab a big enough market share)
Robotech or Gundam (would garner a HUGE asian base along with a lot of us aging anime fans in N America - not enough $$ and people to have both be successful if they both came out so one or the other )
Toy Story - would be a great childrens mmo - with corporate product tie-ins could probably be fee-free to play thus making it a win-win for the dev and parents that would want a wholesome mmo for the kiddles
Batman mmo - dark, brooding, rough PG-13/R, tricky ton of past stories could be played out as well as new ones - endless
Halo MMO [would be much better than tabula rasa unless bungie/MS had a major brain fart]( I am thinking MS wants another MMO - would be a nice cash cow and asheron's call wasnt too bad)
an entirely new Matrix online done the way it should be done [won't happen but it would succeed if they completely retooled it + some new creative staff + migrated everyone from the existing mmo to it for $5 or less]
Unlike sony that screwed themselves in the foot with EverCrack then EQ2 and now Vanguard - splintering their IP with EQ and EQ2 then throws out Vanguard to sink to the bottom of the ocean like a boulder not just a rock ; talk about heads up posteriors!!! It's great for a hardware company to compete with it's own products - eat its own young as they say so that you can retain market share [ala HP printers] but it's bad for a software company or at least a game company to do something so boneheaded like Sony - people want a WoW 2 but if blizz was smart with their next mmo it won't be "fantasy" and when they eventually do bring out a WoW2 of sorts they should migrate the entire WoW base rather than leave it behind [my 2 cents and some will disagree so FLAME ON] -------- so a WoW2 with forced migration from WoW circa spring 2011 so all the kinks were worked out by the Christmas shopping season of that year

The Bible Online
Nuff said, this would rule.
I think a Battlefield 2 / planetside style mmo with sandbox type facets added would be a new breath of fresh air to the genre. As for an IP to attach it to, how about GI Joe.

People will get sick of me saying this but... I think WAR40K could be very, very good if done correctly. Unfortunately, I bet I will be disappointed.
Also what about a realistic History MMO? Set maybe around the 1300's? Japan at the height of it's civil wars, The dark ages, tribal warfare in N. America, Aztecs vs. Incas in S. America. Heck, different servers might represent different time periods like the Roman Empire or Alexander the Great. Do it like EVE with one persistant world... magic and monsters true to the beliefs of the ancient world? Could that be cool?
well the game will be out in a few years...dont judge from now
Interesting i do have a suggestion, a while back guy called JagerMicheal started a thread with the title "What about a classic horror mmo?" and i posted my perfect contender for the first horror mmo,
"
How about a call of cthulhu mmo were you play a recruited demon hunter thats sent back/forward in time on various history changing events which would be a nice addition to have a chance to have various armours and weaponry at your disposal bought/found/crafted in your current time frame and of course the use of various occult talents and trinkets.
There is something on cryptics in developement page that looks interesting, several concept pics that seem to show a few characters from Hunter: the reckoning en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunter:_The_Reckoning maybe cryptic are moving into the console area of gaming or this is an IP they've gained and are working on an mmo version of the lisence , anyway heres the link to the concept stuff www.crypticstudios.com/index.php "
I still think it would be an amazing IP to have a go at the mmo market.
True, I just want to watch with a skeptic's eye so I don't become a Fanboi and be blinded to a game's faults by my own hopes for it's success.
Star Wars. A worldwide multi-cultural phenomenon with millions of fans. Name recognition alone would be enough to sell the game.
After that I'd say The Sims. It's been the bestselling franchise on the PC market for the past 4 or 5 years. It has a huge casual audience. Everybody's heard of The Sims.
My youtube MMO gaming channel
A Harry Potter MMO? I totally agree that that would be a hit. Theres so much money in that idea that its probably just a matter of time.
Classic horror with time travel. Why not? At least it won't be another same old, same old. I'd give it a try.
I honestly wouldnt mind a Highlander MMO, with permadeath
Torrential
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
I'd have to agree with a halo mmo.
lol
MMO migrant.
Dragonlance Online. If any of you have ever read the Dragonlance series, you'd know why I love the idea. Kender, Knights, Dragons, the world is amazing. I know it's another fantasy setting, but Dragonlance has always been my favourite fantasy realm.(I also kind of wish a good director would make the first 3 books into a movie trilogy)
I'd say a horro MMO would be an awesome idea.. Something with an Aleister Crowley feel to it, maybe. I personally think Hellgate has a great setting and wish it could've been a truer MMO akin to something like Tabula Rasa.. Sticky targetting would be a natural fit in that setting. Dynamic attacks by demons, several points of interest to capture and hold.. I think it could work.
Dune, Shadowrun, Alien versus Predator, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Legend of the Five Rings, Mass Effect, Wild West mmo (Tombstone), Grand Theft Auto, etc.
Some of these would make awesome MMOs, others I can just see myself enjoying in an MMO form.
heh was watching Harry Potter today(it was randomly on TV!) and was thinking it would fit into the mmo genre perfectly being so fantasy focused.
Dragonlance. During the War of the Lance when Tanis and Company are running around (Chronicles). There is enough material, magic, and sustained conflict between more or less equally matched sides. The cosmology works for it (and it should since it's all based off D&D).
I think it's amazing that no one has made a MMO off of this yet, but apparently there are licensing and copyright issues. Still, there is definitely money to be made here if it is done properly.
Obviously top IP's can, and do miss. SWG, Matrix Online, and LOTRO (Edit: Cant believe I forgot DnD) did not perform nearly as well as expected, and those are some pretty serious IP's.
What makes an MMO great has nothing to do with how high profile the IP is, but how well the game is made.
Cue WoW pundits...
Perception is Reality.

No such thing. No matter how phenomenal the IP never under estimate the ability of game developers to screw it up so bad that the title winds up under-achieving.

Erm... actually LOTRO has over 300k subs last I heard, in under a year. Certainly not 'wow' stats but then, they clearly stated they weren't trying to be a 'wow' killer. I'd hardly say that it's not performing as well as expected since it's a) over 300k players and b) growing.
DDO agreed... total utter failure
SWG: Agreed, major under-performer.
Matrix: Hard to believe that this game was so abyssmal that SOE actually improved it when they acquired it.

What about the good IPs like South Park and The Wheel of Time!?
I also think maybe an Inuyasha MMO. Like the show or not there is enough oddity there to make it a good MMO IMO.
Still cant believe there hasnt been a "Chronicles of Narnia" MMO,I mean everything is in place..
Good vs Bad guy setting...check
Lots of different races and classes.....check

Big movie realease to stir up more interest...check.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"
